Graduation Requirements

comment heading graphic

How long has the 5 credits needed minimum for your senior year been in effect? And why had it changed... just curious

response heading graphic
It has been a Board of Education Policy for at least 15 years.

comment heading graphic

How many credits are needed to graduate? 26? (This is just total number not by class requirement i.e. 3 math or 4 history) Thanks!

response heading graphic

22.

comment heading graphic

Is it required for a senior to attend their own graduation?

response heading graphic
No. However, it is a major milestone in a young person’s life and the school would like to recognize the graduate in this formal setting.

comment heading graphic

How many credits are required to graduate?

response heading graphic

A minimum of 22. Specific diploma requirements, including required subjects and tests are explained in the Program of Study. Please talk to a school counselor if you have further questions.

comment heading graphic

If a senior student receives just 5 credits this year (including all the required classes), and it amounts to exactly 22 credits, can he/she still graduate without the 5.5 credits required for full time status?

response heading graphic

Any question regarding graduation should be directed to the school counselor who will review the student's transcript to accurately answer the question.

comment heading graphic

Is it true that if a senior fails 2 classes they are not allowed to graduate even if they have the required number of credits and all required classes completed?

response heading graphic

No, this is not true. If a senior successfully satisfies the required courses for a diploma, s/he will graduate.

Cap, gown, tassels, medals, recognitions

comment heading graphic

If someone did not attend graduation, but did pass all of there classes, where do they turn in there cap and gown and pick up there diploma?
response heading graphic

This may be done at the North Main Office of HSE.

comment heading graphic

My son just told me that he needed $20 for his graduation cap and gown!! What???!! I'm not too happy that I have to pay for something that he will obviously have to return. Why is this fee being imposed this year??!!! ARE YOU KIDDING??

response heading graphic
You are "renting" the cap and gown from rental company that has all the different sizes. It is not new this year, it has always been done this way. The cap and gown are returned to the company after the graduation ceremony.

comment heading graphic

Can you explain what the different tassels are for graduates?

response heading graphic

The gold tassel is for having a cumulative average of 85% or higher for four years, all graduates get the green and white tassel.  Some graduates are also given cords... NHS is gold, Tri-M  (National Music Honor Honor Society) is pink.

comment heading graphic

What did the medals signify at graduation/what did the students who wore medals achieve?

response heading graphic

Those medals are recognition of students who have achieved a cumulative high school grade point average of 95 or higher.

comment heading graphic

When do seniors order their cap and gowns and are they allowed to keep their tassels?

response heading graphic

Orders for cap and gown take place in the middle of the senior year.  Students are allowed to keep their tassel.

comment heading graphic

What if seniors want to buy a Cap and Gown? How would we go about doing that?

response heading graphic

Cap and gowns are rentals.  They may contact Marlene at Herf Jones, the company that supplies the caps and gowns, should they have questions regarding a purchase.

comment heading graphic

Are seniors required to pay a fee for rental of cap and gown? Are any provisions made for those students where paying the rental fee for the cap and gown poses a financial burden?

response heading graphic

Yes, there is a fee for rental of the cap and gown. If the class assistant principal is made aware of the person in need of assistance he can work with the company supplying the caps and gowns.  They have always provided extras in situations such as this.

comment heading graphic

What do I do if I did not attend graduation and still have my cap and gown? Where do I need to return it? How/when will I receive my high school diploma?

response heading graphic

Return your cap and gown to the North Office in HSE.  If all obligations to the school have been met, you will receive your diploma.

comment heading graphic

Is there any special recognition to seniors that have enlisted into the Armed Forces?

response heading graphic
Yes, they are recognized during the graduation ceremony.

comment heading graphic

Can seniors who are not in NHS and still maintain a 90+ average for senior year were the yellow cords for graduation?

response heading graphic
No.

comment heading graphic

According to the parent portal -- to get a "95" on a report card requires a grade a 94.500.  Does this mean if you have a 94.500(+) average, you get to wear a medal at graduation?

response heading graphic

Report card grades and cumulative averages are not the same.  They normally don’t round up or down a cumulative career average for graduation recognition (gold cords or medals) or NHS induction.

Graduation facilities, seating, tickets

comment heading graphic

How many people are expected at the graduation?? thank you

response heading graphic

Typically, the amphitheatre, both upstairs and downstairs is at capacity, and a good portion of the lawn near the theatre is used as overflow. The inside seating capacity is about 5200, so that number is probably pretty close to what we expect.

comment heading graphic

Please advise as to the date for the High School graduation rehearsal . Where is the rehearsal conducted ? Shen ? SPAC?

response heading graphic

There is no rehearsal.  Administrators will review in English classes the expectations and instructions for graduation.

comment heading graphic

How is guest seating for the high school graduation ceremony handled?  Are graduates given a certain number of tickets for their family?

response heading graphic

There are no reserved seats for parents and guests for graduation.  Seating is first-come, first-serve basis. Family's with handicapped relatives may contact the principal's office for a parking permit.  While seating inside is limited, there is unlimited seating outside.

comment heading graphic

Do you need tickets to HS graduation? If yes, is there a limit of tickets per family?

response heading graphic

There are no tickets needed for graduation.

comment heading graphic

My child is graduating.  Can you tell me what the facilities at SPAC are like for families coming to the ceremony (i.e. will I need to bring lawn chairs or is there adequate seating, is the seating covered or out in the sun)?

response heading graphic

There is seating for approximately 5,000 inside out of the sun. There is also seating on the lawn (in the sun).

comment heading graphic

I have a child graduating this year from High School and am concerned about being able to get to SPAC and finding seats without having a special day start out being stressed out from just getting there. I know the ceremony starts at 1:30 and all I hear is that we should get there "early" to get seats and parking. How early are we talking about? I also heard another school has their graduation in the morning. What is the earliest time Shen parents can come and get seats? Thanks

response heading graphic
Probably between noon and 12:30pm.

comment heading graphic

Do you know approximately how long graduation lasts? Thank you for your time.

response heading graphic

Approximately 2 1/2 hours.

comment heading graphic

Will the way graduation is done be changed at all if it rains, or should everyone just bring umbrellas and follow what the kids were told in their English classes?

response heading graphic
No, nothing is done differently if it rains.

Dress code, rules of conduct for graduates

comment heading graphic

Why are beach balls and things like that not allowed at graduation? I understand that noise makers are disruptive, but i do not see how a beach ball will decrease the "dignity" of the event. Graduation is a celebration and everyone is excited. The ceremony is long enough, why not just let us, the people who are graduating aka guests of honor, have a little fun. You only graduate high school once, why not have a little fun?

response heading graphic
It is disruptive and disrespectful to the speakers and all other audience members that are attempting to listen and perhaps video record the ceremony.

comment heading graphic

What is the dress code for boys for graduation?  Can they wear shorts?

response heading graphic

Dress for graduation should be appropriate for the formality of the event.  Shorts are not a preferred choice of dress.

comment heading graphic

Do girls have to wear dresses or skirts at graduation or can they wear dress pants?

response heading graphic

Graduation is an important event. Please dress nicely and appropriately. Dress pants are acceptable.

comment heading graphic

A packet was mailed home regarding graduation policies which prohibited bubbles, beach balls, fun, etc. I understand that these practices are inappropriate at certain times during the ceremony, however I also believe that graduation should be a celebration of the seniors' accomplishments over the last four years. Why are such practices banned?

response heading graphic

The administration wishes to create an atmosphere that is conducive to such an important milestone in the life of the students, as well as their families.  Bubbles, beach balls, toys, air horns and games may be a part of a graduation party, but they are not allowed at the graduation ceremony as it takes away from the happy, yet serious and dignified tone of this ceremony.

Photographer at Graduation

comment heading graphic

Will there be videos and pictures available for the seniors to purchase from this years ceremony

response heading graphic

Video of the 2011 graduation is available for purchase. Click here for the order form.

comment heading graphic

Were there professional photos taken at graduation? If so where can we order them?

response heading graphic

Lauren Studios took pictures at graduation.

comment heading graphic

Is there a professional photographer at the graduation ceremony getting pictures of students receiving their diplomas on stage?

response heading graphic

Yes. The school does have a professional photographers at graduation taking photos of students receiving their diploma.

January graduates

comment heading graphic

If you are in eleventh grade, and have the required number of credits. Are you allowed to graduate early?

response heading graphic

Early graduation is possible but it important to speak with your school counselor. The number of credits is only one factor in receiving a diploma.

comment heading graphic

If Shen Seniors who are graduating in January officially graduated at that point, are they going to have a miniature ceremony? Because technically, they'd be officially graduated and unable to attend the later one in June.

response heading graphic
There is no January ceremony. However, those students are able to walk across the stage at the graduation in June.

comment heading graphic

I am graduating in January and do not plan to walk across the stage in June. When will I receive my diploma?

response heading graphic
All diplomas are ordered for distribution in June. Talk to you counselor about it.
