Heard it through the grapevine: a place for you to nip those rumors about the district in the bud...

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

I have read theofficial policy regarding immunizations but was curious how strictly that is enforced. I have heard that there is a student entering kindergarten who does not have any immunizations and is being allowed to enter class.

response heading graphic

It is strictly enforced and in order for someone to be allowed to attend school with no immunizations there must be a medical or religious reasons and documentation must support it.

Who is in charge of the “healthy snack policy” Is it by state, distinct, school or classroom. Is there a list of “approved snacks” and “restricted snacks”? I ask this because I have a child almost to the point of tear because the teacher told her she could not bring in granola bars anymore because the chocolate chips in them are not healthy. Basically my child is being told that their mom is wrong and the teacher knows best.

response heading graphic
As a district we do encourage healthy snacks. We also recognize that what is considered healthy by one person may be considered unhealthy by another so all parties are asked to use their best judgment. In this case we do agree that granola bars (even the ones containing chocolate chips) are an acceptable snack, although we also recognize they may not be permissible in some peanut-free rooms for allergy reasons. We would encourage you to contact your child's teacher so you are able to discuss this issue directly. If this does not work, feel free to speak with your child's building principal.

Second request to know who or where I can find the procedures the schools nurses must follow about contacting parents when a child goes to see the nurse, is injured, hurt, etc.

response heading graphic

You will find that answer in our Elementary Parent Handbook under Health Services.

Why are parents only notified of a head lice outbreak when it affects their classroom instead of within the school?  There are obviously many areas and rooms used by all of the kids and to wait to inform parents only after an outbreak occurs in an individual room is just putting off a parent's ability to respond and watch their kids for symptoms.  I want to know why all parents aren’t notified when the first cases are noticed.

response heading graphic

We notify parents in the classroom as a precaution. It is not required. Head lice do not jump or fly. You have to have significant contact with a person's head to get head lice.

Two questions:  First, what is the district policy, if any, regarding children with head lice in school?  Second, what is the policy, if any, regarding the actions that the school/classroom should take in the event of an outbreak?

response heading graphic

Shen has a "No nit" policy where students found with head lice and/or nits are excluded from school until they are treated and nit free.  At the elementary level, the parents of other children in the class are notified. Over the years that procedure has been reviewed and often modified based on school physician, Health Dept and NYS Education Department advice.

Health Education

comment heading graphic

What health education does Shenendehowa offer at the elementary level? If any, what topics are covered?

response heading graphic
Currently there is no formal health education instruction at the elementary level. DARE is a program that only 5th graders receive. The elementary counselors also offer a variety of health education topics such as abduction prevention, conflict resolution skills, communication etc…
In addition, the Academic Administrator for PE, Health and Wellness K-12 continues to work with elementary staff to incorporate health topics into their curriculum.

Why does Shen only teach about abstinence instead of safe sex? my daughter has mentioned this to me and I think its wrong. No offense to the school but there are many pregnant girls. In my opinion you should focus on helping to keep them be safe instead of forbidding it. Thanks for listening

response heading graphic

Sexual Health Education at Shenendehowa begins with the 5th Grade Maturation Program and continues as a part of regular health education classes in 6th, 8th, & 11th grade. This comprehensive sexual health program promotes abstinence, while providing students with the information they need to remain healthy throughout their life cycle. The curriculum comes directly from the NYS Health Education Functional Knowledge Standards, with the guiding principal that “Individuals have a right to information that can make their lives healthier and happier.” (FLS.I.14).

comment heading graphic

Why is Shen a abstinence only school and how are students informed about preventing STDs and pregnancies?

response heading graphic

By law, all schools must promote abstinence. In addition, the district must also teach units on sex education as part of the health curriculum.

I am very concerned about drug usage by Shen students.  I know many of the 5th graders go through the DARE program but wanted to know how the district was educating students in grades 7/8 and in the high school about the evils of drug use.  Let's not have our head in the sand.  I encourage the district to have more programs for the older students.

response heading graphic

Let's keep in mind that while they may be Shen students, most of the drug/alcohol use is not taking place in school. However, the district does offer a wide range of programs to educate students about this problem. Students have health classes in grade 6, 8 and high school that delve heavily into this subject. Healthy lifestyle choices are discussed and taught in Family and Consumer Science classes. There are assemblies that focus on substance abuse. The district's SRO officer and our school counselors also meet with the students at risk on a regular basis.  The district also employs intervention counselors. The district offers students many opportunities to stay actively involved in school and adhere to the code of conduct.

Physicals - Health Requirements

comment heading graphic

I am having a hard time getting through to my daughters school regarding this...  Are there any required physicals/immunizations, etc. that are required for students entering 5th grade?  My child will not turn 10 until September.

response heading graphic

A physical is required for students entering grades kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 7th and 10th and all new students.

comment heading graphic

I HEARD THAT DENTAL HEALTH FORMS WERE REQUESTED NOT REQUIRED. IS THIS STILL TRUE.

response heading graphic
The dental health assessment is requested not required for gr. k, 2, 4, 7, 10.

comment heading graphic

How should we send it the dental and physical information for elementary, middle, and high school students?

response heading graphic
Send it to your child's school nurse.

comment heading graphic

What is the deal with the dental forms? These forms are ridiculous. On the Shen website it states that students are “requested to present” these dental forms. Does this imply that they are not required? What is the ramification if one does not return the form? Will the child be banned from school or simply banned from using their teeth at school?

response heading graphic

The current state requirements states that “the district must request the form,” it does not require the parents to return the form nor does it provide any consequences if the parent does not comply with the request.
