NYS Testing
Posted on June 3, 2011
The field tests are given in all subject areas annually on a rotating
schedule and they are required by the New York State Education
Department as part of their exam development and analyses. This is where
SED has the opportunity to have real students pilot test items as they
are in development. The exam papers are sent back to SED for analysis.
The exams are not graded and students who miss it due to absence are not
required to make it up. It does not affect the students’ course grade in
any way.

On our curriculum and learning website there is is a link for NYS
Assessment that provides information about the state testing program. On
that page is a link for
NYS report card that takes you to to the NYSTART website that
provides results for all schools.

They must take the fourth grade test by State

N.Y.S. Department of Education determines the
dates for state testing. The curriculum for a particular grade is based on the state's
timeframe. In other words, the math curriculum for a particular year operates on a
March-to-March timeframe. The math instruction after the March
assessment begins to teach topics and strands that are going to be a
part of future assessments. It is also important to mention that the
tests also based upon cumulative skills learned over time in the
grades leading up to a test as well.

We already do hire retirees to score exams.

Teachers are under strict proctoring guidelines for all NYS tests and
they are reviewed at the building level. If there is a concern, please
speak directly with the building principal.

It is next to impossible to get a zero on a state assessment.

With 8th graders having so many state tests why
isn't there better communication to parents advising them when these
tests are so that parents may support their students and assure they
are in school and prepared for these tests?

All of the New York State Standardized tests
are printed on the district calendar that it mailed in August to every
student household. They are also listed on the website on the events
calendar --

If my son is taking 7th
grade math and he is in 6th grade, why does he have to take the 6th
grade NYS math test?

Unless a child is accelerated by a whole grade
(skipping all of sixth grade to participate in the whole seventh grade
curriculum) the child is considered a sixth grader and must take the
NYS math exam per NYS Education Department regulations.

Regents exams are NYS examinations. Certain Regents exams must be passed
in order for a child to graduation. Midterms are tests that are
developed and administered by individual teachers/departments.

You would get credit for passing the course. The Regents test may be
required, depending on what Regents test was failed. See your school
counselor to find out the answer to your question.

The high school administration has looked into
potentially changing this practice with fewer students taking Regents
exams in January. However, more teachers are now giving midterm
exams that help prepare students for the June Regents. In addition, teachers are engaged in a number of
staff development opportunities during these days including ways to
improve instruction and student achievement.

We recommend students take as much language as
possible. It is great background for studies in many areas.
It is a valuable skill in many career choices. We are realizing
as a country how fluency in another language and culture greatly aids
global understanding. Many colleges prefer students have at least
three years of high school language. The number of years you
study language will depend on your particular program choices and
career goals. Generally at Shenendehowa we give the Regents at the end
of the junior year (French 11, German 11, etc.).

That is a question for the State of New York Education Department. We
just administer its test according to its guidelines. It is probably
due to the fact that it is a six-hour test.

Students who are absent for Regents exams may
not make them up during that particular testing period. However,
Regents exams are given in June, August and January. If a student is
absent and misses an exam, the guidance department will work with that
student so that he/she may have another opportunity to take the exam.
Students should do their best not to be absent on the day of the
Regents exam.

No, because some of them cover
multi-years of material.

Clearing either way meets the New York State
Department of Education guidelines.

Yes.

Teachers have the responsibility to prepare
students appropriately for those exams. Students also have a
responsibility to take advantage of review opportunities and to
prepare on their own. The success of both is evident in the district's
high passing rates.

Cell phones are not allowed in the testing
room (the purse isn't either). A room is provided for students to
store backpacks, purses, etc. during the exam.

Different schools do many things differently. At Shen, review books
are purchased by students because they are personal, consumable items.
Posted on May 6, 2008

Students are expected to take (and be
successful) in all exams (Regents or final exams) offered in his/her
classes.
Posted on April 30, 2008

Regents exams may be part of the final average
of a course so the answer may be yes depending on the teacher. Check
with your teacher or counselor to be sure.

You should probably drop your child off
at 7:30 am. The students are given 3 hours to complete the
exam. However, if they are finished with the test, they may
leave after 2 hours.
Posted on January 13, 2009
There is no problem if the student does not
have a Regents exam to take in June. However, if a conflict
exists, the Regents exam must be the priority as there are no makeups.
