Why do we have half days for
Elementary and Middle School students?

The elementary and middle school half days are
part of the contract and they are used for teacher planning, grade
level/team meetings, staff development, curriculum work, meetings with
parents if necessary and/or end of year activities.

This is the worst calendar ever! Why are there random half days during a strong
academic time of the year? Can you move the half days back to the
last week of school when kids are ready for summer vacation and the
schools are hot? This is also very hard for parents to schedule work
around. Please advise.

Half days at the middle school and elementary
school are used to strategically focus on staff development. We
believe that it makes more sense to do so throughout the year. We will
evaluate the effectiveness of the change and act accordingly for the
coming year.

Do you know how long (exactly) summer vacation
is?

It varies depending on the schedule for
Regent's exams and when Labor Day falls.

Why does the school year have to end so late in
June? I understand by law that there is a required number of days in
the school year but has the district ever considered perhaps
eliminating some of these vacation breaks/days off so the school year
can end earlier?? Do we really need a winter and a spring break?

The district's calendar is mostly determined
by the NYS Department of Education regulations (180 days), the NYS
Regents exams (held at the end of June), the Capital Region BOCES
calendar (winter/spring breaks) and the Shenendehowa Teachers
Association contract.
We have all federal/state holidays off. Week
long recess breaks are determined by the regional BOCES calendar. We
comply with the state regulation mandating 180 days of instruction. We
work with in the Regents exams schedule. The rest is authorized by the
board of education based on administrative recommendations.
