What happens to my "F" drive when I graduate? Should I copyright my files on there?

response heading graphic

Once you graduate, you will no longer have access to the network or any files stored on it. The files are deleted as part of routine network maintenance.

Is there any way to access the instructional share drive from a home computer? If so, how?

response heading graphic

Staff with CIRTIX accounts can access the share drive from home. Currently, students cannot. Remote student access is currently being reviewed.

comment heading graphic

When, if ever, will students be able to remote access their user names and “f” drives? This would be a very valuable asset especially when students don’t always have the programs Shen has.

response heading graphic

Currently, there are no plans at this time to provide remote access for students.  This will be re-evaluated in future years.

Is Shen going to be getting Smartboards in any classrooms any time soon?

response heading graphic

Yes, interactive whiteboards are being phased in.

Is it true that the weird beeping noises from the Eikis is from cell phone use? Please clarify because my teachers have all be using a lot of class time being paranoid about these noises/cell phone use.

response heading graphic

The rooms with Eiki LCD units also have speakers.  It is possible that if a cell phone is either transmitting or receiving information (phone call, text message, internet access) that it could cause the speakers to make a noise.

In regards to technology in this district we seem to be behind the eight ball.  The long range plan of years ago was to have a pod of computers in ALL elementary classrooms.  Right now we only have a computer lab in each building.  A district of our caliber should be delivering more to our children.  As a parent of a young elementary child and a high schooler also in the education field, I have seen the inside of other districts and they WAY ahead of us in the technological world.  When is the district going to shift some of its priorities?  Brand new textbooks are sitting unused on school shelves when money could have been better spent.  Interactive Smartboards, more computers, introduction to podcasting and so many other advances could be taking place in classrooms at this point if they had the equipment.  When will our young kids receive what they need?

response heading graphic

Actually, the district has developed a long range plan for infusing instructional technology into our classrooms.  We did a needs assessment and a survey of teachers, students and parents last year and determined that the first priority was instructional presentation hard and software.  To that end we have begun a five year plan to install projectors and presentation stations for classroom usage.  This year we will have installed 216 classroom stations.  We also initiated a pilot using interactive whiteboards.  Our goal is to fully outfit every classroom over the next five to seven years (pending budget issues).  We have also increased the numbers of computers available for student usage. We have moved quite far forward in terms of accessing technology  for teaching and learning.  Given the scope of our district, it is an extremely expensive, long term project.  As for using textbook money to advance technology, it is important for taxpayers to know that textbook money is a protected source with very clear state guidelines on what may be purchased out of those monies, and technology is not one of the permitted categories.

Does the district ever plan to assign students e-mail address like those their teachers have? This would be a great way to ensure that teachers have a way to contact their students.

response heading graphic

Currently we have no such plans.

Why can't every classroom get an interactive whiteboard, (promethien Activboard)? My teacher has one and it makes math so much more fun. Math used to be my least favorite class, and now it's my favorite. Everyone on my team wants to participate more so they can go write on the board. It increases class participation and attention. It's a breath of fresh air that the kids love, so why not get them for all the classes?

response heading graphic

We are thrilled to hear how well the interactive whiteboards are working out!  We would also love to put them in more classrooms, but it will take time as they are very expensive.  We purchased a few this year and will add a few more each year as the budget allows.

Internet Security/Filters

comment heading graphic

My son brought to my attention that students in the computer lab at HSE were accessing adult websites and showing my son. Is there any sort of protection on these computers? I am very concerned.

response heading graphic

The district has Internet content filtering in place on all district computers that blocks inappropriate web site access.  If inappropriate material is being accessed in any way (failure in the filter system, loaded by another student, etc. ), it is important that it be brought to the attention of a lab aide or teacher immediately so that it the issue can be addressed.
