comment heading graphic

Are high school students allowed to add another elective for the 2nd semester, if they no longer would like a study hall?

response heading graphic

Yes, if there is room in the class and any prerequisites have been met. Please talk to your school counselor as soon as possible.

comment heading graphic

Is it possible to take intro to business as a sophomore?

response heading graphic

Yes. It is offered to students in grades 9-12.

comment heading graphic

Can seniors leave during lunch?

response heading graphic

No.

comment heading graphic

Can High School East kids leave the front building without signing out?  Is there anyone there to stop them?

response heading graphic

Students are not allowed to leave the building without permission.  There is a monitor at the reception desk.

comment heading graphic

Why can't juniors that play sports all three seasons have parking passes?

response heading graphic

Only seniors have parking privileges...approximately 350 parking spaces, 700 seniors.

comment heading graphic

Are high school yearbook pictures considered part of an official school document like transcripts, IEPs, interims?

response heading graphic

No, it is not, however, class yearbooks are only sold to members of the class in question and we do not make those pictures available.

comment heading graphic

Are the lunch tables at West ever cleaned between periods or only at the end of the day? My daughter has 7th period lunch and says the tables are totally disgusting by that time. They have to try to clean them themselves with napkins which don't really work.

response heading graphic

The cafeteria monitors clean the tables between seatings.

comment heading graphic

Is there any recourse for high school students who have items stolen from their backpacks during school hours?  My son's calculator was taken.

response heading graphic

Students are asked to secure all personal belongings in their locked locker or by keeping these items with them.  If things are missing, they should be reported to an administrator who will investigate the possible theft.

comment heading graphic

Is there an accelerated Latin class?  Will this class count towards 2 years or more of Latin if there is one?

response heading graphic

There are no "accelerated" LOTE courses.  This year we have a beginning Latin course (Latin 9A) in HSE.  There are College level courses in all four languages taken after LOTE 11.

comment heading graphic

When is class rank calculated and made available for juniors?

response heading graphic

The official class rank for college application purposes is given to seniors in the fall. Juniors can request an unofficial rank in the spring when they meet with their counselor in the junior conference.

comment heading graphic

If you are in eleventh grade, and have the required number of credits. Are you allowed to graduate early?

response heading graphic

Early graduation is possible but it important to speak with your school counselor. The number of credits is only one factor in receiving a diploma.

comment heading graphic

My High School West student in addition to required school supplies ($50), was REQUIRED to purchase a graphing calculator ($140), a Spanish workbook ($11), a Science Workbook ($17 + the cost of gas because it could only be purchased at Borders), a Chorus folder ($.50) and was required to bring in $12 for a all 9th-grade field trips, all within the first month of school. At the same time I just mailed my $2,000 school tax bill.  With the hard economic times and the heating season upon us when will the District stop asking me to finance my student’s PUBLIC education?

response heading graphic

Considering the economic times, it is understandable that people are concerned about taxes. The average taxpayer pays $3,500.  For a family with a child in school that equates to $3.00 an hour to have a single child educated at Shen ($3,500/180days/6.5hours per day= $2.99). As a school district, we strive to balance the needs of our students and parents with the needs of our taxpayers who have no children in our schools. That is why parents are asked to supply personal and/or consumable items that their child will use during the school year.

comment heading graphic

My daughter, who attends HSE, arrives at school at least 20 minutes early every day. She would like to have a quiet area to go to study and finish up homework. The library is already full when she gets there, her homeroom isn't open, and the cafeteria is too noisy. Can't quiet areas be provided for those students seeing as they have to arrive at school so early due to busing issues? It is a waste to have to wander aimlessly around the hallways for 20 minutes every morning.

response heading graphic

The library is available to students, but has limited seating.  The computer labs are often open early as well.  Your daughter should check with her teachers to find out which ones are in school as early as she is and ask to make arrangements to find a place in their room, prior to homeroom.  Many teachers also work with students in their workroom area prior to school.

comment heading graphic

How many credits are required to graduate?

response heading graphic

A minimum of 22. Specific diploma requirements, including required subjects and tests are explained in the Program of Study. Please talk to a school counselor if you have further questions.

comment heading graphic

According to the parent portal -- to get a "95" on a report card requires a grade a 94.500.  Does this mean if you have a 94.500(+) average, you get to wear a medal at graduation?

response heading graphic

Report card grades and cumulative averages are not the same.  They normally don’t round up or down a cumulative career average for graduation recognition (gold cords or medals) or NHS induction.

comment heading graphic

At the High School East open house it was mentioned that they are trying to separate the three grade levels to some extent in order to promote a "home base" for each grade. I think this is a fantastic idea, because the school is so large.  Hopefully this will offset the feeling of being lost and never seeing a familiar face, especially when you are a sophomore.  My concern is that I also heard that some of the teacher don' t support the idea.  I am not sure why, but as a parent who went through a very tough sophomore year with my child I recommend you continue this policy.

response heading graphic

We are happy that you and your child are having a good experience with many of the classes being clustered in parts of the HSE building.  The purpose, primarily, was to provide teachers the opportunity to collaborate easier, reduce time spent between classes traveling by students and to provide a smoother transition for 10th grade students new to the building.  The administration will continue to evaluate this approach.  In addition, we are not at all aware of  lack of support for this.  While some expressed reservations last year about this idea, the faculty is continually concerned about creating a better learning environment for students.  Let's hope that this clustering is a step toward that goal of creating a better learning environment.

comment heading graphic

Why does Shen not offer more college level courses through the University in the High School Program? The course are approximately 1/3 the cost of the Syracuse University classes. They have a large number selections- including those offered through Syracuse.

response heading graphic

The high school presently offers over 25 college level/credit courses and is investigating the potential for more courses for the future.

comment heading graphic

Does the HS keep statistics on how many students are accepted vs. how many apply to specific colleges?

response heading graphic

We rely on students to give us that information because not all colleges provide it to our school. So, while we do keep those statistics, we do not know who accurate they are.

comment heading graphic

What is this program that people are doing where they go to Hudson Valley for their senior year of high school and still graduate with Shen at graduation?

response heading graphic

It is not the norm, but some seniors prefer to attend HVCC to complete their NYS high school diploma requirements. Students are considered high school students even though they attend HVCC. HVCC has an application that needs to be filled out. See your counselor for more information.

comment heading graphic

My daughter is 18. Is it necessary for me to sign Field Trip Emergency Consent forms? Or can she legally act on her own behalf?

response heading graphic

While legally, she may act on her own, the district requires parents to sign permissions and to be available to school staff in case of an emergency and to discuss academic and disciplinary issues.

comment heading graphic

Why can't high school transcripts be requested through the Shenet site or via e-mail?

response heading graphic

Because there is a fee that needs to be paid.

comment heading graphic

Why are high school east students not aloud to go to the courtyard during study hall? what if they had a pass to the library and then go to the courtyard by the doors in the library? they have enough people to watch.

response heading graphic

Students are not allowed in the courtyard during study halls because that is a time provided to students to take care of academic responsibilities and the courtyard is not conducive to that.

comment heading graphic

How come my son can’t take keyboarding as a 9th grader?

response heading graphic

Keyboarding is not being offered due to low enrollment.

comment heading graphic

Why are we not the plainsmen any more? If we still are then why do we not have an Indian or some thing of that nature as our mascot not a horse.

response heading graphic

Shenendehowa loosely translated means “great plains.” That is why we ARE still the Plainsmen.  We stopped using the Native American mascot/logo many years ago because many Native Americans expressed concerns about its use. Since then, the Commissioner of Education has also mandated that schools stop using Native American mascots and logos. In the meantime, students asked if they could develop a new mascot. Mascots were designed by students and then the entire student body voted and selected the horse.

comment heading graphic

What is the Math Science Technology Academy?  Is it just a new semester long interdisciplinary course that students can take in high school in addition to their other courses?

response heading graphic

MST Academy is a full year integrated program of Math, Science, and Tech.  It will be three periods of instruction per day in a student's schedule.  The program is designed to provide students with the 3rd unit of math and the 3rd unit of science required for graduation as well as an additional elective credit in Technology.  Approximately 50 - 60 juniors and/or seniors will be admitted to the academy and it will be co-taught by 3 teachers (one from each department...Math, Science, and Technology.)

comment heading graphic

How come administrators have access to YouTube but students don't? It seems very unfair to me. You guys make the rules, so why can't you follow them?

response heading graphic

Administrators and teachers have access to YouTube so that it is available for use in the classroom when appropriate. It is filtered for students because there are many things on it that are inappropriate for a school setting.

comment heading graphic

Why are spring sports and the senior prom, not featured in the high school yearbook of that year?

response heading graphic

The yearbook goes to print before the spring sports and proms have taken place.  Therefore they are not generally a part of the publication.  Is it time for us to consider a video yearbook so that the entire year's activities could be included?

comment heading graphic

How come all the bathrooms in the high school are locked in the morning besides the one near the main entrance? It is very inconvenient for people who need to use the restroom with the overcrowding in the only one that is open!

response heading graphic

The bathrooms are opened at 7:30 am.  The exceptions are those located at the main entrance.  This is due to an inability to supervise the other bathrooms until 7:30 am.

comment heading graphic

Is it true that 9th graders have to share the bus with 10th, 11th, and 12th graders?

response heading graphic

Yes. Shenendehowa High School buses carry students to school each day in grades 9-12.

comment heading graphic

Has the district considered constructing additional exits from the student parking lot at HSE to reduce congestion before and after school?

response heading graphic

The district has incorporated a bypass lane in front of HSE.  This has greatly reduced the congestion in this area.  Adding more exits that would just end up on the same road would not really help.

comment heading graphic

What are the hours of the HSE School store?

Are parents allowed to go to the Shen store in the HSE building to buy apparel?

Why is there a candy store in High School East? I don't think this is a healthy idea. Thanks

response heading graphic

The school store is open the last two periods of the school day for student use.  However, parents wishing to purchase items from the store may contact the advisor, Mrs. Kelly to make such purchases.  Candy is sold at the conclusion of the lunch periods.

comment heading graphic

Why can’t students e-mail with out permission?

response heading graphic

Supervision is again at the heart of this issue.  It is important to monitor what sites and addresses students are accessing while under the supervision of the school.  Therefore email and website access is continuously monitored.

comment heading graphic

The halls at high school east are always so crowded, and it's hard to get from one building to another in five minutes, especially if your in gym, will you ever change that five minute time limit?

response heading graphic

High School East is crowded, but not over capacity.  While it is difficult at times to navigate the hallways, most students can get to their classes on time if they manage their time between classes efficiently.  Changing the five-minute passing time is not a consideration at this time. However, the administration is looking at scheduling patterns to help alleviate this concern.

comment heading graphic

Why do the computers make so many errors on the students' schedules?

response heading graphic

More than likely it is human error that occurs when entering the information and setting the parameters in the scheduling program.

comment heading graphic

I am a current student at HSE, and I was wondering if it is really necessary to have tables set up behind the main cafeteria for members of the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force? I think that there is enough propaganda with out them pushing flyers into my face.

response heading graphic

Yes, it is necessary. For the same reasons, both legally and otherwise, that the district allows colleges to visit the school and provide literature; the district also has an obligation to our military service branches.

comment heading graphic

Why do students in high school still need to be "supervised" since most of them are used to being unsupervised at home?

response heading graphic

The district has a legal responsibility to ensure the safety and security of all students. We trust and hope that positive behaviors that are learned at home are practiced in school making the "supervision" of high school students a mere technicality.

comment heading graphic

If a student loses his or her School I.D, how do they go about getting a new one? Does it cost anything?

response heading graphic

Students who lose their IDs may get a replacement by contacting Mrs. Sherry Pufky in the Principal's Office.  There is a $5.00 replacement fee.

comment heading graphic

Why is there a ban on all card games in the high school cafeteria? What difference does it make if nobody is gambling on a non-face card game?

response heading graphic

It is difficult for staff members to determine whether or not the students are playing cards for the purpose of gambling.  Therefore, card playing is not allowed during the school day. In addition, the students' time might be better spent in other ways of socializing or completing school work.

comment heading graphic

What is school policy regarding food and drink in the classroom? P.S. can I use the response in my March 2008 article for the Shen Pen

response heading graphic

Food and drink are not generally allowed in the classroom.  However, there are certain lessons related to the cultures of other countries that are enhanced by food and therefore are permissible.  In addition, teachers occasionally use food as a source of motivation or prize for some students, which is also allowed. And yes, you can use it for the Shen Pen.

comment heading graphic

Why does the high school have 40 minutes in the beginning of the day of free time? Wouldn't that time be more effectively spent in an elective class, study hall, or just plain starting school later, or ending it earlier?

response heading graphic

Buses drop students off at 7:10 a.m. and school starts at 7:40 a.m. This is so that the buses can drop at the high school and begin the next run for elementary schools. Currently, the district is conducting a transportation study looking at availability of buses and the impact on the start and dismissal times of all the schools. That being said, it is not a full 40 minutes by the time students get into the school, go to their lockers, etc. And, not all students take the bus. So, many arrive at school much closer to the start of school.

comment heading graphic

I would like to see an additional honors English class for tenth-grade students. There should be more than just World Cult/Lit. How do we get this changed?

response heading graphic
The decision to offer additional honors-level classes is made each year around December/January. Discussions involve faculty, administration, guidance and student/parental input. In the past, there has not been a great deal of feedback from either parents or students to suggest the need for additional English honors for gr. 10 students. However, if you believe more should be offered, please contact Mary Ann Campe, academic administrator for English, or Don Flynt, high school principal.

comment heading graphic

What is the TAP program that parents of 8th graders were invited to. My child is in 8th grade and I don't know anything about this program or the meeting?

response heading graphic

TAP stands for Transitional Academic Program.   The program is a special bridge program for students as they transition to the high school.   Students who are at risk for academic failure at the high school level are referred to the program by their middle school counselor.  Parents interested in more information can contact their child's middle school counselor.

comment heading graphic

Does the district report thefts of student property to the police? If someone is caught stealing items are they arrested and is there any attempt to recover stolen items?

response heading graphic

It depends on the situation. All thefts should be reported to the building administration and should be investigated. The district is not responsible for items brought to school by students.

comment heading graphic

Why can't we work in collaborative groups or listen to ipods during study hall?

response heading graphic

The Code of Conduct prohibits use of electronic devices during the school day.

Such devices include, but are not limited to: Walkmans, MP3 players (audio listening devices), cell phones, Palm Pilots, cameras or any other instrument that can be used to transmit images, sound or information from one source to another. Such devices shall not be used during the school day from the time a student enters the school building until dismissed; except when part of classroom instruction or other authorized activity.

If students need to complete a collaborative assignment during study hall, arrangements can be made by speaking with the study hall monitor, teacher or administrator.

comment heading graphic

What is the typical dropout rate over the past few years? Are these students from both the general education and special education population?

response heading graphic

The drop out rate for general education students over the past few years has held steady at approximately 2%. The drop out rate for special education students has fluctuated between 3 and 4%.

comment heading graphic

Are we allowed to schedule class in place of lunch if we want to?

response heading graphic

No. According to NYS Education Law, each school shall schedule a reasonable time for each full day pupil attending pre-kindergarten through grade 12 to consume lunch.

comment heading graphic

Is the high school using Small Learning Communities? Some of the students seem to think that they are.

response heading graphic

The main principal of Smaller Learning Communities is the notion of personalizing a large school environment. There are many ways to do so this and the high school has made major efforts including a greater administrative presence throughout the building, an attempt to minimize the distance students need to travel between classes, and a new reception desk in the main entrance. There are specific programs that are being recommended for next year, such as the Math/Science/Technology initiative that will continue these efforts to further personalize the high school learning environment.

comment heading graphic

Why does the high school start so early, especially in light of all the studies that have been done that indicate that teenagers need more sleep?

response heading graphic

The start of the high school day is based on the following factors:  it coordinates with other school districts for interscholastic athletic schedules;  it provides the time needed for after school for other activities such as extracurricular clubs, academic support, jobs, etc.; and it helps some families by ensuring that older students arrive home before younger siblings.

comment heading graphic

Why wasn't everyone allowed in the student section at homecoming?

response heading graphic

It is a privilege provided for high school students and it is also a means of helping to manage the large number of fans.

comment heading graphic

Why can't the track team run in the hallways before 4 p.m.?

response heading graphic

It is a safety issue. The building still has a significant number of people in the halls between 3 and 4 p.m.

comment heading graphic

Why can't seniors walk alone to their locker to grab a textbook during a free period?

response heading graphic

Students walking in the hallways during class are a potential distraction to the instructional activities taking place. Monitors are in stationed throughout the building in order to maintain adequate supervision of our students. Seniors are allowed to walk alone but with the permission of an adult through the pass system.

comment heading graphic

Why can't students print projects on color ink without a teacher's permission?

response heading graphic

Because students were printing a vast majority of their papers in color, even when it was not necessary. Since the new procedure was instituted, printing in color has been reduced from 3,00 sheets per month to 700 sheets per month. This represents a considerable savings on printing cost over a 10 month period.

comment heading graphic

Is it true that High School East has a candy store?

response heading graphic

High School East has a school store that sells student supplies and materials for class. To supplement its revenues, the store also sells candy after lunch and after school.

comment heading graphic

What is the protocol regarding AIS (Academic Intervention Services)? How and when are parents notified as to their child being in the AIS program?

response heading graphic

Parents should receive a letter from their child's principal in advance of receiving AIS. The letter is standard procedure. Being below a level 3 in reading is one of the criteria for academic intervention services in first grade. If you were not notified, you should contact your child's principal to discuss.

comment heading graphic

Is High School West for 9th-grade students only?

response heading graphic

High School West is for the 9th-grade program. That means that you could have older and/or younger students in the building.

comment heading graphic

What and where is "The Fridge" in HSE? Is it a study hall, a hangout room? I am a junior and I still don't know what it is.

response heading graphic

The "Fridge" is a "cool" room in High School East, next to the South Office. Seniors can "chill out" during their unscheduled periods but it is also open to all East students during their lunch periods. The room was named and furnished by the Senate. Lost and Found is located there. Before and after school the room is used for club meetings and the Senate uses it for its caucus and meetings.

comment heading graphic

I heard that at least two students who were suspended or expelled from Shen are now being tutored at the library? Is this true and/or is it being paid with taxpayers money? If so, why?

response heading graphic

Education Law 3214 provides that after suspending a student, the school district must take immediate steps to provide that student with alternative instruction is the student is of compulsory education age. We generally try to do so at mutually agreeable sights such as the library. However, sometimes the tutor goes to the home.

Senior Topics Privileges/Parking/Prom/Graduation

Graduation Requirements

comment heading graphic

If a senior student receives just 5 credits this year (including all the required classes), and it amounts to exactly 22 credits, can h/she still graduate without the 5.5 credits required for full time status?

response heading graphic

Any question regarding graduation should be directed to the school counselor who will review the student's transcript to accurately answer the question.

comment heading graphic

Is it true that if a senior fails 2 classes they are not allowed to graduate even if they have the required number of credits and all required classes completed?

response heading graphic

No, this is not true. If a senior successfully satisfies the required courses for a diploma, s/he will graduate.

Senior Pranks/skip day

comment heading graphic

If several of the seniors do a rather safe and appropriate senior prank would they get in trouble? Because their is much talk about not being able to graduate if a senior prank is carried out. Please clear this up.

response heading graphic

With more than 2,500 people in HSE, there are no pranks that would be appropriate.  Therefore, the administration will treat these according to the Code of Conduct.  Consequences can range from warnings to detentions to possible exclusion from certain events, including graduation.

Senior Trip

comment heading graphic

Who comes up with the senior trips because I sure didn't have a say in anything?

response heading graphic

The class council. Members of the class council are elected by the students.

College-related questions

comment heading graphic

Do seniors have to pay a dollar to send mid-year grades to a college?

response heading graphic
No.

comment heading graphic

Is the high school guidance office going to post the senior college choices on their website like the did in the past?

response heading graphic

The HSE Counseling Center posts senior college choices on the outer office window by May 1st. Senior college choices are not posted on the website.

comment heading graphic

Is it essential to report all college acceptances and scholarships to the counseling office or is it optional?

response heading graphic
The college acceptances has been required. The High School uses it to help future student applicants get a better sense of colleges that have accepted Shen students. Scholarship information is optional, but if a student accepts a scholarship and does not report it, it will not be printed on the graduation program.

Junior Topics - Citizenship Passes/Parking/SAT/PSAT

comment heading graphic

How would I go about getting my son a temporary parking pass if I am out of town and he has an appointment?

response heading graphic

You need to speak with Mr. Ripchik in the South Administrative Office at HSE.

comment heading graphic

Can I drive to school during Regents  week to take the Regents even though I don't have a parking pass or do I have to take the bus?

response heading graphic

Yes.

comment heading graphic

Why are so many juniors allowed to drive and park at school when others are denied? It seems that when these juniors get to 11th grade all of a sudden they can't take a bus for some reason.

response heading graphic

There are a limited number of student parking spaces.  Only seniors who have met the criteria and some juniors, with special circumstances considered by the administration, are allowed to park on campus.  If others are parking who have not met the criteria, they are doing so in violation of the parking rules and guidelines set by the Parking Committee put together last year to make recommendations.

comment heading graphic

Will the Junior class rankings be listed anywhere to see who is what rank?

response heading graphic

Rank for college application purposes is determined in the fall of the senior year. All seniors receive a copy of their transcript then, and it will have the rank on it. The entire class rank is not made public.

comment heading graphic

Are juniors next year getting free periods or study halls?

response heading graphic

11th graders will have a study hall next year if their schedule and course selection calls for a study hall.

comment heading graphic

If your not going to junior prom can you still go to the after party?

response heading graphic

Yes. Even if students do not attend the prom, they may attend the after prom party.

comment heading graphic

Why can't 11th-grade students get parking passes?

response heading graphic

Because there are not enough parking spaces.

Physical Education Topics

comment heading graphic

Are the President's Physical Tests still used at High School East?

response heading graphic

We are in the process of implementing Fitness Gram, which will take the place of the presidents test.  Some are using the president’s test and some are piloting with Fitness Gram.  Our goal is to have full implementation of Fitness Gram next year.

comment heading graphic

My 9th grader was told if they miss gym for any reason (like absent due to illness ) they will have to make up the gym class. Since my student does not have any study halls due to an extra elective she was told she will need to do this over her lunch.  Since you've already responded that NYSED says that students are suppose to have a lunch period and why is this being taken away for a legal absence?

response heading graphic

The physical education recommends that if your child does not have a study hall that he/she should talk to their teacher to work around scheduling issues. The teachers in the department do not recommend making up the gym class during lunch. If you have a concern, contact the teacher.

comment heading graphic

How do students benefit from coed gym classes?  My daughter is in one now at the high school level and she complains when they play some sports the guys do not toss the ball to the girls at all and she gets frustrated because she is athletic as are many others.

response heading graphic

The Title IX regulation has always stipulated co-ed physical education. The district is now moving more toward full compliance with both the spirit and the intent of the law. Any issues with a particular physical education class should be addressed with the teacher or the academic administrator for physical education.

comment heading graphic

Why aren't physical education units like "combative games" and football separated by sex? Why aren't classes based upon skills?

response heading graphic

Quite often the choices do not follow gender lines. In other words, there are numerous examples of situations where a male student might chose not to participate in "combative game" unit, while a female student may choose to do so. Ultimately, the safety of the student and the quality of the learning experience are the final determinants.

comment heading graphic

Is gym counted in your average at  high school east?

response heading graphic

Physical Education grades are not averaged into a student's grade point average.

comment heading graphic

Since gym isn't averaged into GPA in high school, why isn't it just a pass/ fail class? The grading seems to be somewhat random and inconsistent between gym teachers and students seem to really resent graded assignments (like papers on snowshoeing and ping pong playing tests) when the grade doesn't count.

response heading graphic

First and foremost, a gym is a location where Physical Education takes place. One of the goals of the physical education department is to raise the level of accountability for all of its students.  Assessment is essential to accomplish this goal. It is one of the tools used to evaluate where the students are developmentally, and what educators need to evaluate the program to help students learn more productively. The physical education department uses the N.Y.S. PE Profile as the basis for assessment. While assessments and assignments are becoming more consistent throughout the department, there is still some individuality in the approach from various teachers.  It is like any other core class.  As long as the teachers are working to achieve the same intended outcomes, they have flexibility in their approach.

comment heading graphic

Why were physical education class exemptions for varsity athletes rescinded?

response heading graphic

According to the NYS Commissioner of Education regulations, there are no exemptions from Physical Education. Athletes should be exposed to the lifetime fitness aspects of physical education curriculum which is different from the specific skills being taught in their sport.

comment heading graphic

Why were physical education classes changed to co-ed, no one seems to like it?

response heading graphic

According to the NYS Department of Education:

"The Title IX regulation specifically prohibits segregated classes in physical education (§86.34)." It goes on to say that "Physical education course must be conducted coeducationally for females and males. However, students MAY be separated by sex for two reason:

1. When they are participating in contact sports.

2. When grouping students by ability results in groups which are composed predominantly of either females or males.

Sex separation during contact sports is not mandatory; if it is used it should be used only during participation in contact activities. If students are to be grouped by ability, it must be assessed by objective standards for each major activity unit."

LOTE

comment heading graphic

After a student starts taking a particular language in LOTE can they ever change to a different language in a subsequent year?  For ex. can a 8th grader taking French take Spanish in 9th grade if they don't like French?

response heading graphic

We now offer beginning levels of language in HSE on an alternating basis when there is sufficient enrollment.  This coming year we are offering Latin 9A and German 9A. Go to the Program of Studies on the counseling website for a complete course description.

comment heading graphic

Is it true that high school students can take beginning Latin or beginning German as a second LOTE (Languages Other Than English) class during the next academic year?

response heading graphic

Yes. German 9A and Latin 9A will be offered for students in grades 10-12. To take these courses, students must be enrolled in another LOTE course or have permission from the academic administrator for LOTE.

comment heading graphic

How were the four languages that are offered decided upon? I was surprised Italian did not make the cut.

response heading graphic

The four languages that we have in place have been since the early 1970s. There was a Russian program for several years in the 1970s but the program ended when the teacher left the district. We may consider adding another language in the future.

comment heading graphic

Is it true that only certain Latin students may attend the field trip to Italy?

response heading graphic

No. The trip to Italy was open to all Latin students.

comment heading graphic

Why isn't there a Spanish exchange program?

response heading graphic

The LOTE Department has investigated establishing an exchange program and may look into it again in the future. However, at this time, they feel that our travel opportunities to Spanish speaking countries (combined with Spanish cultural opportunities through LOTE Fest and field trips) are the best option.

Policies - Dress Code/Absence/Tardy/PDA/Cutting class

I have been late many times but only for the beginning of homeroom. How can me missing the pledge matter? I still learn the same things throughout the day, so why will that effect my senior privileges?

response heading graphic

The school day begins at 7:45 am.  When students arrive after that time, they are considered late to school. Those are the rules.

My daughter claims that towards the end of last year, many private school kids started visiting. Were these kids registered on the visitor list to ensure safety in the school?

response heading graphic

While we can not say for certain that this did not happen or that the students were registered, we can tell you that our policy does not allow visitors during the school day without an appointment and without a purpose to be in the school.

What is the policy for former Shen students to visit Shen?

response heading graphic

They may visit after 3pm.

I heard that when a teacher sees a cell phone (maybe sticking out a child's back pocket) or if they are found using their cell phone that teachers freely snoop through their text messages and read them.  Isn't this a violation of privacy?  Even principals admit it's done but allow it.

response heading graphic

Teachers do not freely look at students' text messages.  Students are not allowed to use cell phones during the school day.  This is a clear violation of the Code of Conduct.

Why are students in High School East not allowed to eat in the courtyard?

response heading graphic

Students are discouraged from eating in the courtyard because our animal friends sometimes then create a nuisance with the leftovers!

We hear so much about the dress code suggestions, guidelines and rules...but never consequences.  What are they consequences and do they differ for the severity of infraction?

response heading graphic

The consequences are generally that students are told to correct the violation of the dress code by changing the inappropriate clothing.  They may also spend time in supervised study or if the student consistently disregards the directive of the administrator, they would be given harsher penalties for insubordination.  In some cases, depending on the violation, students may also be given a warning.

Why is nothing being done about kids smoking cigarettes in the high school parking lot after school when everybody is leaving?

response heading graphic

Smoking on school grounds is prohibited by law.  When students are found to be smoking, they receive an appropriate consequence as part of the district's progressive discipline procedure.

comment heading graphic

As I walk through the halls, I see PDA everywhere. What is even more disgusting is that staff members see it as well, but they pretend not to. They just walk on by and pretend nothing's happening. Why is this?

response heading graphic

Students are asked to refrain from public displays of affection.  All adults are asked to address this when they see it and to report this to the appropriate administrator if it continues.
