potentially changing this practice with fewer students taking Regents
exams in January. However, more teachers are now giving midterm
exams that help prepare students for the June Regents. This

ever before. In addition, teachers are engaged in a number of
staff development opportunities during these days including ways to
improve instruction and student achievement.

We recommend students take as much language as
possible. It is great background for studies in many areas.
It is a valuable skill in many career choices. We are realizing
as a country how fluency in another language and culture greatly aids
global understanding. Many colleges prefer students have at least
three years of high school language. The number of years you
study language will depend on your particular program choices and
career goals. Generally at Shenendehowa we give the Regents at the end
of the junior year (French 11, German 11, etc.).

Considering the economic times, it is understandable that people are
concerned about taxes. The average taxpayer pays $3,500. For a family
with a child in school that equates to $3.00 an hour to have a single
child educated at Shen ($3,500/180days/6.5hours per day= $2.99). As a
school district, we strive to balance the needs of our students and
parents with the needs of our taxpayers who have no children in our
schools. That is why parents are asked to supply personal and/or
consumable items that their child will use during the school year.

According to the parent
portal -- to get a "95" on a report card requires a grade a 94.500.
Does this mean if you have a 94.500(+) average, you get to wear a

Report card grades and cumulative averages are
not the same. They normally don’t round up or down a cumulative
career average for graduation recognition (gold cords or medals) or
NHS induction.

At the High School East
open house it was mentioned that they are trying to separate the three
grade levels to some extent in order to promote a "home base" for each
grade. I think this is a fantastic idea, because the school is so
large. Hopefully this will offset the feeling of being lost and never
seeing a familiar face, especially when you are a sophomore. My
concern is that I also heard that some of the teacher don' t support
the idea. I am not sure why, but as a parent who went through a very
tough sophomore year with my child I recommend you continue this
policy.

We are happy that you and your child are
having a good experience with many of the classes being clustered in
parts of the HSE building. The purpose, primarily, was to provide
teachers the opportunity to collaborate easier, reduce time spent
between classes traveling by students and to provide a smoother
transition for 10th grade students new to the building. The
administration will continue to evaluate this approach. In addition,
we are not at all aware of lack of support for this. While some
expressed reservations last year about this idea, the faculty is
continually concerned about creating a better learning environment for
students. Let's hope that this clustering is a step toward that goal
of creating a better learning environment.

Students are not allowed in the courtyard

information.

What are the categories of awards and what is the criteria for HS
West? Who nominates the students? Explain to me how a student who is
in accelerated program in all core subjects with at least 95% average
throughout the year is not receiving or nominated for any award in 9th
grade.

Students were recognized for academic success,
academic improvement, character and attendance. From a class of more
than 800 students, 217 students received recognition. Teachers and
committees had to selected. High School West offers many recognition
programs including a similar fall awards assembly, a character
education program called Time to Shine and other events. The awards
are listed below:
-
Academic Excellence Award-Students are
recognized who have an overall GPA of 96 or higher for the first three
quarters of 9th grade.
-
Departmental Award-Each department develops
their own criteria for the selection of the Departmental Award and
recognizes one male and one female student.
-
Notable Scholar Award-This award recognizes
students who have achieved academic success and are a good role model
to his or her peers. Each teacher nominates one student.
-
PTSA Most Improved Award-This award recognizes
students who have shown the most academic improvement within a subject
area. East teacher nominates one student.
-
PTSA Neil Hesson Award-This award is given to
a male or female student in the freshman class with outstanding
citizenship and character, academic achievement, integrity and has
done a great deal for the school and fellow students. A committee
selects one male and one female student from students who were
nominated and completed student profiles.
-
Amy Marie Law Fellowship Award-This award is
given to a 9th grade female student who most personifies the qualities
and characteristics of friendliness, is non-judgmental of peers,
participates in class and building activities, and has good
academics.A committee selects one male and one female student from
students who were nominated and completed student profiles.
-
Excellent Attendance Award-Students are
recognized who have been in school everyday since the beginning of the
year.

Why are we not the
plainsmen any more? If we still are then why do we not have an Indian
or some thing of that nature as our mascot not a horse.

Shenendehowa loosely translated means “great
plains.” That is why we ARE still the Plainsmen. We stopped using the
Native American mascot/logo many years ago because many Native
Americans expressed concerns about its use. Since then, the
Commissioner of Education has also mandated that schools stop using
Native American mascots and logos. In the meantime, students asked if
they could develop a new mascot. Mascots were designed by students and
then the entire student body voted and selected the horse.

What is the Math Science
Technology Academy? Is it just a new semester long
interdisciplinary course that students can take in high school in
addition to their other courses?

MST Academy is a full year integrated program

instruction per day in a student's schedule. The program
is designed to provide students with the 3rd unit of math and the 3rd
unit of science required for graduation as well as an additional
elective credit in Technology. Approximately 50 - 60 juniors
and/or seniors will be admitted to the academy and it will be
co-taught by 3 teachers (one from each department...Math, Science, and
Technology.)

The bathrooms are opened at 7:30 am. The

benefits of taking an AP (Advanced Placement) class?

Besides being more challenging
than most high school courses, there are colleges that either waive
required courses or grant college credits (saving tuition money). This
depends on the score achieved on the Advance Placement test. Students
should challenge themselves by taking Advanced Placement courses if
they are capable and should seek advice from their counselor if they
have questions.

The halls at high school
east are always so crowded, and it's hard to get from one building to
another in five minutes, especially if your in gym, will you ever
change that five minute time limit?

High School East is crowded, but not over
capacity. While it is difficult at times to navigate the hallways,
most students can get to their classes on time if they manage their
time between classes efficiently. Changing the five-minute passing
time is not a consideration at this time. However, the administration
is looking at scheduling patterns to help alleviate this concern.

recognize high school students who go above and beyond academically
and in the community?

Each year HSE has a special awards night that
recognizes students for a variety of achievements including academic
achievement and community service. This year, HSW will also have a
year end awards ceremony. In addition, students in grades 11 and
12 are eligible for a variety of scholarships and as appropriate,
students are recognized during the morning announcements.

current student at HSE, and I was wondering if it is really necessary
to have tables set up behind the main cafeteria for members of the
Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force? I think that there is enough
propaganda with out them pushing flyers into my face.

Yes, it is
necessary. For the same reasons, both legally and otherwise, that the
district allows colleges to visit the school and provide literature;
the district also has an obligation to our military service branches.
Posted on March 11, 2008
Why do students in high school
still need to be "supervised" since most of them are used to being
unsupervised at home?

The district has a legal responsibility to
ensure the safety and security of all students. We trust and hope that
positive behaviors that are learned at home are practiced in school
making the "supervision" of high school students a mere technicality.

Why is there a ban on all card games in the high school cafeteria?
What difference does it make if nobody is gambling on a non-face card
game?

It is difficult for staff members to determine whether or not the
students are playing cards for the purpose of gambling. Therefore,
card playing is not allowed during the school day. In addition, the
students' time might be better spent in other ways of socializing or
completing school work.

What is school policy regarding food and drink in the classroom? P.S.
can I use the response in my March 2008 article for the Shen Pen

Food and drink are not generally allowed in the classroom. However,
there are certain lessons related to the cultures of other countries
that are enhanced by food and therefore are permissible. In addition,
teachers occasionally use food as a source of motivation or prize for
some students, which is also allowed. And yes, you can use it for the

taken away?

With the great success of our athletic teams and performing groups, it
is difficult to display all the trophies that students earn in their
competition at Shen. However, this should not diminish the hard work
or effort of our students. If your high school group has earned
trophies or awards, please feel free to bring this to the attention of

Why does the high school have 40 minutes in the beginning of the day
of free time? Wouldn't that time be more effectively spent in an
elective class, study hall, or just plain starting school later, or
ending it earlier?

Buses drop students off at 7:10 a.m. and school starts at 7:40 a.m.
This is so that the buses can drop at the high school and begin the
next run for elementary schools. Currently, the district is conducting
a transportation study looking at availability of buses and the impact
on the start and dismissal times of all the schools. That being said,
it is not a full 40 minutes by the time students get into the school,
go to their lockers, etc. And, not all students take the bus. So, many
arrive at school much closer to the start of school.

Such devices include, but are not limited to:
Walkmans, MP3 players (audio listening devices), cell phones, Palm
Pilots, cameras or any other instrument that can be used to transmit
images, sound or information from one source to another. Such devices
shall not be used during the school day from the time a student enters

Is the high school using
Small Learning Communities? Some of the students seem to think that
they are.

The main principal of Smaller Learning
Communities is the notion of personalizing a large school environment.
There are many ways to do so this and the high school has made major
efforts including a greater administrative presence throughout the
building, an attempt to minimize the distance students need to travel
between classes, and a new reception desk in the main entrance. There
are specific programs that are being recommended for next year, such
as the Math/Science/Technology initiative that will continue these
efforts to further personalize the high school learning environment.

Why does the high school
start so early, especially in light of all the studies that have been
done that indicate that teenagers need more sleep?

The start of the high school day is based on
the following factors: it coordinates with
other school districts for interscholastic athletic schedules; it
provides the time needed for after school for other activities such as
extracurricular clubs, academic support, jobs, etc.; and it helps some
families by ensuring that older students arrive home before younger
siblings.

Students walking in the hallways during class

maintain adequate supervision of our students. Seniors are allowed to
walk alone but with the permission of an adult through the pass
system.

Why can't students print
projects on color ink without a teacher's permission?

Because students were printing a vast majority
of their papers in color, even when it was not necessary. Since the new procedure was instituted, printing in
color has been reduced from 3,00 sheets per month to 700 sheets per
month. This represents a considerable savings on printing cost over a

What do I do if I did not attend graduation and
still have my cap and gown? Where do I need to return it? How/when
will I receive my high school diploma?

Return your cap and gown to the North Office
in HSE. If all obligations to the school have been met, you will
receive your diploma.

My child is graduating. Can you tell me what
the facilities at SPAC are like for families coming to the ceremony
(i.e. will I need to bring lawn chairs or is there adequate seating,
is the seating covered or out in the sun)?

There is seating for approximately 5,000
inside out of the sun. There is also seating on the lawn (in the sun).

A packet was mailed home regarding graduation
policies which prohibited bubbles, beach balls, fun, etc. I understand
that these practices are inappropriate at certain times during the
ceremony, however I also believe that graduation should be a
celebration of the seniors' accomplishments over the last four years.
Why are such practices banned?

The administration wishes to create an
atmosphere that is conducive to such an important milestone in the
life of the students, as well as their families. Bubbles, beach
balls, toys, air horns and games may be a part of a graduation party,
but they are not allowed at the graduation ceremony as it takes away
from the happy, yet serious and dignified tone of this ceremony.

Is there a professional photographer
at the graduation ceremony getting pictures of students receiving
their diplomas on stage?

Yes. The school does have a professional
photographers at graduation taking photos of students receiving their
diploma.

What is the dress code for boys for graduation?
Can they wear shorts?

Dress for graduation should be appropriate for
the formality of the event. Shorts are not a preferred choice of
dress.
Posted on May 13, 2008
Do girls have to wear dresses or skirts at
graduation or can they wear dress pants?

Graduation is an
important event. Please dress nicely and appropriately. Dress pants
are acceptable.

How is guest seating for the high school graduation ceremony handled?
Are graduates given a certain number of tickets for their family?

There are no reserved seats for parents and
guests for graduation. Seating is
first-come, first-serve basis.
Family's with handicapped relatives may contact the principal's office
for a parking permit.
While seating inside is
limited, there is unlimited seating outside.

HS graduation? If yes, is there a limit of tickets per family?

There are no tickets needed for graduation.

Are seniors required to pay a fee for rental of cap and gown? Are any provisions made
for those students where paying the rental fee for the cap and
gown poses a financial burden?

Yes, there is a fee for rental of the cap and gown.
If the class assistant principal is made aware of the
person in need of assistance he can work with the company supplying
the caps and gowns. They have always provided extras in
situations such as this.
Posted on April 8, 2008
When do seniors order their cap and gowns and are they allowed to keep
their tassels?

Orders for cap and gown take place in the
middle of the senior year. Students are allowed to keep their tassel.
Posted on April 8, 2008
What if seniors want to buy a Cap and Gown? How would we go about
doing that?

Cap and gowns are rentals. They may contact
Marlene at Herf Jones, the company that supplies the caps and gowns,
should they have questions regarding a purchase.
Posted on May 27, 2008
Can you explain what the different tassels are
for graduates?

The gold tassel is for having a cumulative average of 85% or higher
for four years, all graduates get the green and white tassel. Some
graduates are also given cords... NHS is gold, Tri-M (National Music
Honor Honor Society) is pink.
Graduation
Requirements
Posted on May 6, 2008
If you are graduating
this year and in order to get your advance regents diploma, do you
have to have 3 years of science and pass all 3 regents?

In order to get a Regents Diploma, you have to have taken and passed 5
Regents exams as follows:
-
1 English, 2 SS, 1 Math, 1 Science. and accrued at least 22 units of
credit in the appropriate areas.
-
To get an Advanced Regents Diploma, you have to have taken and passed
8 Regents exams (including the 5 for a Regents Diploma, plus 3 more)
and accrued at least 22 units of credit in the appropriate areas.
-
To receive an Honors Designation with the diploma the average of all
of the scores of all of the Regents exams taken by the student must be
90 or higher.
Posted on May 6, 2008
If a senior student
receives just 5 credits this year (including all the required
classes), and it amounts to exactly 22 credits, can h/she still
graduate without the 5.5 credits required for full time status?

Any question regarding graduation should be
directed to the school counselor who will review the student's
transcript to accurately answer the question.
Posted on April 8, 2008
Is it true that if a
senior fails 2 classes they are not allowed to graduate even if they
have the required number of credits and all required classes
completed?

No, this is not true. If a senior successfully satisfies the required
courses for a diploma, s/he will graduate.
Awards Night
Posted on May 20, 2008
Why do the High school awards ceremonies have to
be so long? Can there be something done to trim it down some?
Sitting from 6:30 until close to 10:00 is a bit ridiculous. Some
speeches go on way too long. A way to reduce the time is to have
what the awards are in the brochure for all to read about.
Knowing what we know now, we will not attend any more.

We are proud of the many achievements of our
students and this is an important event that honors their hard work
during their many years at Shenendehowa. It took just about 3 hours to
complete. This is due to the large number of awards, both
monetary and gifts, that our community generously makes available to
our students. If you have specific examples of ways to make the
evening more pleasant for our students and their guests, please
contact Mr. Flynt with your ideas.
Posted on May 8, 2008
What kind of awards are given out on award night for HSE? Do you
have to be invited?

There will be a number of awards presented
including department, college and community based scholarships.
All are invited, but only the recipients and their families received
invitations.
Posted on May 8, 2008
Is it fair for one student for example to get 10 different
scholarships while another gets no scholarships and worked just as
hard?

Many of the scholarships that are presented to
our high school students are chosen by outside groups and
organizations. These are often announced after the school
selects their recipients for the few that the high school staff is
able to select. As a result, some students do earn multiple
awards while some worthy students earn none. This should not
diminish the hard work and effort of those students who comprise the
Class of 2009. We are proud of them.

Senior
Pranks/skip day
Posted on May 8, 2008
If several of the seniors do a rather safe and appropriate senior
prank would they get in trouble? Because their is much talk about not
being able to graduate if a senior prank is carried out. Please clear
this up.

With more than 2,500 people in HSE, there are
no pranks that would be appropriate. Therefore, the administration
will treat these according to the Code of Conduct. Consequences can
range from warnings to detentions to possible exclusion from certain
events, including graduation.
Posted on June 5, 2008
I am a parent of a senior at East and she told
me that on senior skip day there are actually school officials who go
out places looking for students. This is ridiculous. Senior skip day
is a tradition and if students want to skip one day it shouldn't be a
big deal. I think you guys can find something better to do with your
time rather than running around upstate NY trying to get students in
trouble.

On such days, school officials do not go
looking for students. However, if school officials are told of
locations where large groups of students may be congregating and
engaging in behaviors that are inappropriate, the school has a
responsibility to take action in an effort to protect these
students who should be in school, by law, at that time.

Skipping school is deemed "inappropriate" by

How does prom on a boat
work? Is it affected by inclement weather? Can it accommodate as many
people? I am concerned that it is a long drive to Lake George and that
once on the boat, there would be no way to leave before the end.
Thanks

Inclement weather will only affect the
opportunity to go on top deck. The boat will accommodate us without
the use of the top deck. The actual time the students will need to be
on the boat is 3 hours. There is 1 hour of dock time on either end of
the voyage that is flexible for arrival and departure.
Posted on July 31, 2008
I had asked a few
questions regarding Senior Prom in the upcoming school year, but I
still feel like I was left hanging on one of the questions. I'm
guessing it is just too early to determine the cost of the trip as of
right now, but is there any way of knowing if the cost will be anymore
than $60 because of the circumstances? I believe this was the price of
Senior Prom last school year.

The details are still being worked out. The
advisors and class council will work diligently to keep the cost of
the senior prom in line with past year's prices.
Posted on July 15, 2008
I heard about Senior Prom being on a boat in
Lake George next year. I know it is still being determined whether or
not that will work, but I have some questions if that were to happen.
Usually there is a certain time that students are allowed to arrive to
Prom at. Will that time change because the boat needs to leave?
Also, will the price still be $60 or will it increase because of the
location of Prom? Another question I have is what will it take for
this to pass for Prom? Does there need to be a certain number of
students, parents, and faculty members to agree because of the fact
that it is on a boat and could be looked upon as dangerous? I
personally would in fact love the idea of locating Prom on a boat. I
think it is a very good idea.

The Senior Prom will be held on a boat in Lake
George. The decision was based on the recommendations of the student
leaders, class advisors and administration. As a result, some special
stipulations will be put into place that will be communicated to
students throughout the year.

Why doesn't the Shen prom have a walk in like a
lot of other school districts? Nobody gets to see anyone dressed up.

There are many things other school districts
do that we don't and vice versa. The answer is that it has never been
done because, with 800 students going to the prom, it would be quite a
crowd control as well as a parking problem. However, if you are
interested in pursuing the idea, contact the high school principal.
Posted on May 1, 2008
Why can't the students
who qualify to get a free prom ticket, get a free one for their date

The fund is set up for Shenendehowa students

I was wondering if we
bring a date to senior prom and they do not attend Shen, do they have
to bring identification?

Yes. They must have ID to get in.

All guests of the prom from outside of
Shenendehowa High School are subject to the approval of the
administration. Contact your grade level associate principle.

Senior Privileges
Posted on July 31, 2008
Do the Regents exams
have any relation to senior privileges? If you fail a Regents, will
your senior privileges be taken away?

The Regents exams currently have no impact on
senior privileges. However, they remain important parts of the
overall assessment of the student's academic performance.
Posted on August 13, 2008
Shenendehowa seniors are required to pay a $40
fee for a parking permit. What is this money used for?

To our knowledge, almost all school districts
charge students to park. In fact, Shenendehowa has one of the lower
parking fees in Suburban Council. The money goes into the general
budget as a revenue source and is used to offset expenses including
monitors, paving, plowing, security, etc.
Posted on April 28, 2008
How do you get early release and late arrival? Will our schedules
automatically put our free periods 1st or 9th period?

Seniors will be allowed late arrival and early release by meeting
specific criteria as seniors. Students are not, however, able to
change their schedules simply to create a schedule that gives them a
study hall at the beginning or end of the day.
Posted on March 27, 2008
What are the minimum
number of class periods a senior student must attend before going home
for early release?

Five credits (courses) plus physical education
per Board of Education policy.
Posted on February 4, 2008

No, it is not
true.
Posted on April 10, 2008
There are always a ton
of parking spaces closer to the school but students are not allowed to
park there because they are "staff spots". If there are no cars in the
parking spots, don't you think students should be able to park there?

Some parking spots are located near the
building at East and appear not to be used. However, they are
reserved for teachers and administrators who work in both East and
West or East and another district building and travel during the day
between schools.
Posted on March 13, 2008
Can seniors who do not
have a parking pass ever be allowed to drive to school for a day? Can
they get a one day pass?

A limited number of one day temporary parking permits
are available to students who have a medical or legal obligation.
Students must bring a note from their parents and present this to the
Class Assistant Principal with the date the permit is needed, vehicle
information, and parent contact number at least one day prior to the
date the permit is needed

No.

Is the high school guidance office going to post the senior college
choices on their website like the did in the past?

The HSE Counseling Center posts senior

choices are not posted on the website.

Is it essential to
report all college acceptances and scholarships to the counseling
office or is it optional?

The college acceptances has been required. The High School uses it to
help future student applicants get a better sense of colleges that
have accepted Shen students. Scholarship information is optional, but
if a student accepts a scholarship and does not report it, it will not
be printed on the graduation program.

How do you register for
the PSAT and SAT? When are the dates? Do you have to be in a specific
grade to take them?

For the PSAT, you register in the counseling
center. The dates are listed in the district's calendar. This year it
will be held on October 18, 2008 at High School East.
To register and get the dates for the SAT you
can go on line to
http://www.collegeboard.com/. You can also register by mail, you
need an SAT Registration Booklet, which is available at in the
counselor's office. The SAT Registration Booklet contains the
registration form, return envelope, test dates, registration
deadlines, fees, instructions, test center codes, and other
registration-related information.
As far as what grade you have to be in to take
the test, talk to your counselor.

I have a question about the Junior
Autobiography. I am entering my Senior year this fall, and I still
have not returned the Autobiography. Is there anyway I can return it
at the start of school, and still have my Senior conference? I heard
that without the Junior Autobiography, a student is unable to have
their Senior conference.

The junior autobiography is an important
document that enables your counselor to best assist you in your
college search and application process. It is a prerequisite to a
senior conference. That being said, you can still turn it in at the
start of school and then schedule a conference.
Posted on July 15, 2008
Why are so many juniors allowed to drive and
park at school when others are denied? It seems that when these
juniors get to 11th grade all of a sudden they can't take a bus for
some reason.

There are a limited number of student parking
spaces. Only seniors who have met the criteria and some juniors, with
special circumstances considered by the administration, are allowed to
park on campus. If others are parking who have not met the criteria,
they are doing so in violation of the parking rules and guidelines set
by the Parking Committee put together last year to make
recommendations.

Will the Junior class
rankings be listed anywhere to see who is what rank?

Rank for college application purposes is
determined in the fall of the senior year. All seniors receive a copy
of their transcript then, and it will have the rank on it. The entire
class rank is not made public.
Posted on May 8, 2008

these passes?

The citizenship pass is for grade 11 students.
It allows
them to access academic areas such as the library and computer labs
without a pre-signed pass.
It is based on academic achievement, attendance and discipline.
Students may present completed citizenship forms to the CAP (class

When considering class
rank, are more advance honors classes given a higher placement than
lower level classes?

Yes. For class rank only, all honors
courses (and accelerated courses for eighth graders only) are weighted
by a multiplier of 1.03. All AP (advanced placement), SUPA (Syracuse University Project Advance), and SUNY
courses are weighted by a multiplier of 1.06.
Posted on February 6, 2008
I believe
accelerated/honors classes increase a student's GPA/ranking by a
certain amount--by how much? Does each accelerated class provide their
own curve?

Accelerated/honors classes are not weighted
for the Grade Point Average (GPA). They are weighted for the class
rank. All honors courses (and accelerated courses for eighth graders
only) will be weighted by a multiplier of 1.03. All AP (advanced
placement), SUPA (Syracuse University Project Advance), and SUNY
courses will be weighted by a multiplier of 1.06.
Posted on February 7, 2008
How come grades can't be
weighted when applying for National Honor Society?

The new board policy to weight grades for
class rank began with the class of 2008. While there has been much
discussion about whether or not to weight grades for other
recognitions, at this point it is only done for class rank.
Posted on April 10, 2008

My 9th grader was told
if they miss gym for any reason (like absent due to illness ) they
will have to make up the gym class. Since my student does not have any
study halls due to an extra elective she was told she will need to do
this over her lunch. Since you've already responded that NYSED says
that students are suppose to have a lunch period and why is this being
taken away for a legal absence?

The physical education recommends that if your
child does not have a study hall that he/she should talk to their
teacher to work around scheduling issues. The teachers in the
department do not recommend making up the gym class during lunch. If
you have a concern, contact the teacher.
Posted on May 12, 2008
If students are missing physical education
classes for AP exams, do they have to make them up?
If a doctor has written a note for a high school student to be excused
from gym, is it mandatory for the student to make up the missed
classes?

Physical education is New York State mandated
course and required for graduation. The policy states that students
who are absent from class are required to make up classes for course
credit. In addition, they may need to make up any missed assessments,
quizzes, and or assignments on the day they are out. Our guidelines
are clearly listed on the Shenendehowa Physical Education web page,
http://www.shenet.org/district/academicdept/PE/pehs.htm. It is the
responsibility of the student to check with their respective teacher
upon their return. If further explanation is needed please contact
someone in the high school physical education department.

How do students benefit from coed gym classes?
My daughter is in one now at the high school level and she complains
when they play some sports the guys do not toss the ball to the girls
at all and she gets frustrated because she is athletic as are many
others.

The Title IX regulation has always stipulated co-ed physical
education. The district is now moving more toward full compliance with
both the spirit and the intent of the law. Any issues with a
particular physical education class should be addressed with the
teacher or the academic administrator for physical education.
Posted on May 30, 2008
Why aren't physical education units like
"combative games" and football separated by sex? Why aren't classes
based upon skills?

Quite often the choices do not follow gender lines. In other words,
there are numerous examples of situations where a male student might
chose not to participate in "combative game" unit, while a female
student may choose to do so. Ultimately, the safety of the student and
the quality of the learning experience are the final determinants.
Posted on March 18, 2008
Is gym counted in your
average at high school east?

Physical Education grades are not averaged
into a student's grade point average.
Posted on March 27, 2008
Since gym isn't averaged
into GPA in high school, why isn't it just a pass/ fail class? The
grading seems to be somewhat random and inconsistent between gym
teachers and students seem to really resent graded assignments (like
papers on snowshoeing and ping pong playing tests) when the grade
doesn't count.

First and foremost, a gym is a location where
Physical Education takes place. One of the goals of the physical
education department is to raise the level of accountability for all
of its students. Assessment is essential to accomplish this goal. It
is one of the tools used to evaluate where the students are
developmentally, and what educators need to evaluate the program to
help students learn more productively. The physical education
department uses the N.Y.S. PE Profile as the basis for
assessment. While assessments and assignments are becoming more
consistent throughout the department, there is still some
individuality in the approach from various teachers. It is like any
other core class. As long as the teachers are working to achieve the
same intended outcomes, they have flexibility in their approach.
Posted on February 6, 2008
Why were physical
education class exemptions for varsity athletes rescinded?

According to the NYS Commissioner of Education
regulations, there are no exemptions from Physical Education. Athletes
should be exposed to the lifetime fitness aspects of physical
education curriculum which is different from the specific skills being
taught in their sport.
Posted on February 5, 2008
Will Physical Education
grades be averaged into the Grade Point Average (GPA) next year? Also,
do kids have to sign up for a physical education "track" for next
year?

Physical Education grades are not and will not
be part of the GPA. Students do need to sign up for a physical
education track (electives). This will allow for greater
accountability for the student and the teacher. Students will still
have a variety of electives throughout the year but it will be with
the same teacher.
Posted on February 14, 2008
Why were physical
education classes changed to co-ed, no one seems to like it?

According to the NYS Department of Education:
"The Title IX regulation specifically prohibits
segregated classes in physical education (§86.34)." It goes on to say
that "Physical education course must be conducted coeducationally for
females and males. However, students MAY be separated by sex for two
reason:
1. When they are participating in contact
sports.
2. When grouping students by ability results in
groups which are composed predominantly of either females or males.
Sex separation during contact sports is not
mandatory; if it is used it should be used only during participation in
contact activities. If students are to be grouped by ability, it must be
assessed by objective standards for each major activity unit."

After a student starts

different language in a subsequent year? For ex. can a 8th grader
taking French take Spanish in 9th grade if they don't like French?

We now offer beginning levels of language
in HSE on an alternating basis when there is sufficient enrollment.
This coming year we are offering Latin 9A and German 9A. Go to the

Posted on March 12, 2008
Is it true that high school
students can take beginning Latin or beginning German as a second LOTE
(Languages Other Than English) class during the next academic year?

Yes. German 9A and Latin 9A will be offered
for students in grades 10-12. To take these courses, students must be
enrolled in another LOTE course or have permission from the academic
administrator for LOTE.

How were the four languages that
are offered decided upon? I was surprised Italian did not make the

The four languages that we have in place have
been since the early 1970s. There was a Russian program for several
years in the 1970s but the program ended when the teacher left the
district. We may consider adding another language in the future.

Is it true that only certain Latin students may attend the field trip

No. The trip to Italy was open to all Latin students.

The LOTE Department has investigated

to Spanish speaking countries (combined with Spanish cultural
opportunities through LOTE Fest and field trips) are the best option.

I heard that when a teacher sees a cell phone (maybe sticking out a
child's back pocket) or if they are found using their cell phone that
teachers freely snoop through their text messages and read them.
Isn't this a violation of privacy? Even principals admit it's done
but allow it.

Teachers do not freely look at students' text
messages. Students are not allowed to use cell phones during the
school day. This is a clear violation of the Code of Conduct.

Why are students in High School East not allowed to eat in the
courtyard?

Students are discouraged from eating in the
courtyard because our animal friends sometimes then create a nuisance
with the leftovers!

We hear so much about
the dress code suggestions, guidelines and rules...but never
consequences. What are they consequences and do they differ for
the severity of infraction?

The consequences are generally that students
are told to correct the violation of the dress code by changing the
inappropriate clothing. They may also spend time in supervised
study or if the student consistently disregards the directive of the
administrator, they would be given harsher penalties for
insubordination. In some cases, depending on the violation,
students may also be given a warning.

Why is nothing being done about kids smoking cigarettes in the high
school parking lot after school when everybody is leaving?

Smoking on school grounds is prohibited by
law. When students are found to be smoking, they receive an
appropriate consequence as part of the district's progressive
discipline procedure.
Posted on May 20, 2008
Why are some kids not held responsible for skipping class while others
receive detentions for it ?This does not seem fair.

With a school of almost 3,000 students in
grades 9-12, some students will not be caught and will appear to avoid
consequences. That is not our intention and we continue to be
diligent in how we work with students who make poor choices.

Are there such things as cut days in high school? my friend says
everyone cuts school one day and goes out somewhere together?

There are no acceptable cut days at school.
If students are caught being illegally absent they will be punished
according to our code of conduct.

Are flip flops considered appropriate foot wear
at school?

While these fall in the "acceptable" category, we don't advise wearing
these as they may become a safety issue in the event of an emergency
where students are expected to exit the building quickly.

What is the policy of perfect attendance at HSE?
If kids are in school for part of a day (because of appt's etc..) but
not whole day, is that still perfect attendance if they never actually
miss a whole day?

For students to have perfect attendance they must be in school each
day, for the entire day. The only exceptions would be for a field
trip or if the senior student had a schedule that had late arrival or
early release.
Posted on April 21, 2008
What is the criteria for
perfect attendance at the high school and do students get recognized
at awards night or graduation for it?

The criteria is simple. Students need to be
in school each day unless on a class/school trip. Last year those
with perfect attendance were recognized at graduation.

Why is it acceptable for
a sports team to be late for school following a late night game the
previous evening and the same consideration is unacceptable for the
drama club after their Thursday night performance?
Why is nothing being
done about tardiness to school? Students come late to 1st period 4 out
of 5 days a week and they never get in trouble...Maybe driving
privileges should be taken away or after school detention.

The high school administration believes that
it is important for all students to be to school on time, regardless
of athletic or co-curricular activities the night before school. That
is why both the high school and district are looking at guidelines for
attendance and activities to create important expectations for
students, including appropriate consequences for those that chose to
disregard these.
Posted on February 7, 2008
How are violations of
the new dress code being addressed at High School East and West?

Violations of the dress code are handled by
the administration in both buildings. If students are in violation
they have the option of: changing their clothes; turning the
inappropriate shirt inside out; covering up the offensive shirt; or
wearing a clean item supplied by the school. The alternative to these
options would be that the student would be sent home.
Posted on February 4, 2008

The student is still tardy to school because
he/she was not in school on time. However, it is a legal tardy, not an
illegal one.
Posted on February 5, 2008
If a student is absent
from school due to a family trip, is it considered an unexcused
absence? What does this mean for the student?

If a student is absent because he/she is on a
family trip, it is considered an unexcused absence. We strongly
discourage vacations while school is in session.

How are high school
students recognized for perfect attendance and what is the criteria
for that perfect attendance?

Students in HSW with a 95% or higher
attendance will be recognized during the awards celebration at the end
of the year. An attendance committee has been developed and will
suggest ways to help improve student attendance at HSE with their
recommendations.

Many high schools do not
allow students to earn credit for a class- regardless of their grade-
if they have not met minimum attendance requirements. Has Shen
considered such a policy? Why or why not?

In fact, the district is in the process of
reviewing the attendance policy, and is researching the legality of
doing so- applying attendance to grade. More will information will be
provided in the coming months as the policy revision goes to the board
of education for review and approval.
Posted on March 13, 2008
Many high
schools have attendance policies whereby students are removed from
classes after exceeding a certain number of absences. Why doesn't
Shenendehowa have such a policy, in place?

Understanding that
attendance is tied to the overall academic success, the removal of a
student from class due to excessive absences seems to be
counterproductive. The reward for truancy should not be a legitimate
reason to be absent. Ironically, the district is reviewing our
attendance policy and looking at other ways to handle frequent
absenteeism.

Why are students who
have a number of scheduled free periods in a row not allowed to leave,
even with parent permission?

With parental permission, students are allowed
to leave for doctor, dental or legal appointments and return to
school.

I still do not get why
if a student has a prior commitment before school, that they are
obligated to attend homeroom, and if they do not, they are punished
for it. Homeroom is just a "free time" and nothing is really addressed
other than the same announcements everyday.

Homeroom is a mandatory period built into the
school day to take attendance and to share important information with
students. The only acceptable excuses, with parental verification,
are for illness, doctor, dental or legal appointments.

As I walk through the
halls, I see PDA everywhere. What is even more disgusting is that
staff members see it as well, but they pretend not to. They just walk
on by and pretend nothing's happening. Why is this?

Students are asked to refrain from public
displays of affection. All adults are asked to address this when they
see it and to report this to the appropriate administrator if it
continues.

Why are there no symphonic band concerts from
January-May? It goes from December 17 to June 1 without one,
according to the calendar.

The band faculty for grades 5-12 are currently
discussing a spring band festival in late March or early April. This
will be the spring concert. More information will be shared during
open house in the fall.

Why is there no Marching
Band at Shen? I think it is an outrage that a school of this
size and caliber does not have a Marching Band.

Years ago Shen had a march band, but due to
what was believed to be a lack of interest and budget concerns at that
time, the program was eliminated. It has not since surfaced as a
priority need, which would require several years of planning and
coordinating to get started.

I heard that in 9th
grade students do not have a choice of what band they are going to be
in, is this true?

Yes. The Grade 9 Concert Band and Grade 9
Symphonic Band are carefully constructed of equal ability
and balanced instrumentation. Students are placed into
these ensembles accordingly.

Why aren't music
students given something like a permanent pass so that they can go to
practice rooms during study hall?

The idea of permanent passes seems like a good
idea. However, these passes designed to give students access are
sometimes problematic, especially when students try to use the
practice rooms that are already being used. This then creates a
supervision issue. However, passes to these areas may be accessed by
speaking with the music teacher and/or the study hall monitor.

You said that the
district spent money on the HS East music department last year, I was
wondering, what did you spend the money on?

Outdated classroom music equipment and stands
that needed replacing.
Posted on March 5, 2008
Why aren't music accomplishments listed on the announcements?

Musical
accomplishments are recognized during the morning announcements when
the high school principal is notified about them. In fact, students
who have been selected for All-County are having their names announced
during homeroom all this week. Also, as appropriate, the music
department has displayed trophies in the main showcase of High School
East to recognize the music students and their accomplishments.
Posted on February 6, 2008
Is it true that students
who take private music lessons outside of school can earn their high
school music credit through these lessons instead of taking a school
course?

No, requirements for graduation are taught at
the high school. However, if the course of study meets rigorous
criteria and is taught by a certified teacher, they might be able to
receive an elective credit which would appear on their transcript.

What are the requirements to be inducted into
the National Honor Society?

Students are invited to join the National
Honor Society in their junior year after demonstrating qualities of
service, leadership, character and scholarship on the application. For
more information, go to the NHS website at
http://www.nhs.us/s_nhs/index.asp or look at the application on

How can we begin the process of getting a
marching band or even a parade band representing Shen?

Student interest. A student letter was sent
home to all 9-12 high school band students on August 9, 2005 inviting
students to join a pep band. Student response was minimal. A
follow-up attempt was made in September 2005 at the start of the
school year yielding not enough student participation to form an
ensemble.

Why is it that Grapevine will waste time and
space repeatedly answering the SAME QUESTIONS (calculators, HS ID
tags, and Elementary Supply lists), but when I submitted a question
concerning the disparity between qualifications for NHS there was no
response? Per the NHS organization website, students with an 85
average are eligible, but I'm told that Shen requires a 90 average for
their chapter of NHS. Is this true? If so, at what point is the
average calculated? Is there someplace on the Shen website that I can
look to see what Shen's requirements are?

Each question is important to the individual
who is asking it. Some questions take more time to be answered and
some have already been answered.
The national NHS organization says local chapters may set their own
GPA (grade point average) requirement. In order to be invited to apply, the requirement
is that the student must have a 90% GPA (that has been the benchmark at Shen for the past 30 years or more). In applying, you
must also have completed 20 hours of community service PRIOR to applying,
show evidence of leadership and list any honors or awards you have
received. Shen also requires an essay.
The average, which generates the invitation letter to apply, is based
on the end of the 3rd marking period of your junior year. Anyone
interested in knowing more can go to
http://www.shenet.org/high/HS_Extracurricular/NHS.htm, and look at
the current application.

How come the cheerleading squad is
called a team on some occasions and a club on others? Or is it about

Team and club are often used interchangeably
by people for many different school-related activities. For
purposes of identifying the funding source, it is technically referred
to as an extra-curricular club.

Why does the

Because as an extracurricular activity it is sponsored

representing Shenendehowa Central Schools. According to the code of conduct,
all students are
expected to:
"Represent Shenendehowa when participating or
attending school sponsored events with the highest standards of

facilitate the community service requirement.

Regents Exams
Posted on August 28, 2008
Is there Regents exams in January this year? It
is not marked on the Shen calendar?

They are listed in the Shen calendar on
January 27 and it says "thru January 30." However, we inadvertently
forgot to put the "No School for Gr. 9-12" boxes on those dates.
Posted on July 23, 2008
Why does the English Regents have to be two days
when all of the other subjects are only one?

That is a question for the State of New York Education Department. We
just administer its test according to its guidelines. It is probably
due to the fact that it is a six-hour test.
Posted on June 5, 2008
If we are absent on our Regents day due to
illness or some other thing, how do we make up the Regents exam that
we miss?

Students who are absent for Regents exams may
not make them up during that particular testing period. However,
Regents exams are given in June, August and January. If a student is
absent and misses an exam, the guidance department will work with that
student so that he/she may have another opportunity to take the exam.
Students should do their best not to be absent on the day of the
Regents exam.
Posted on July 9, 2008

I heard that on Regents, if you have a
calculator, it is supposed to have it's memory cleared, right? Well on
my Regents that is not what happened. We only had our RAM cleared
instead of ALL our MEMORY on our calculators cleared. Is this
acceptable? I wasn't sure which one it was, if it was ram cleared or
all memory cleared. If it is memory cleared, is our regents tests all
acceptable?

Clearing either way meets the New York State
Department of Education guidelines.

If a High school student fails the Earth Science

Yes.
Posted on June 11, 2008
Are teachers given a guide line as to how much
time they should spend reviewing for Regent Exams during class? Also
it does not appear that teachers are using the best methods for
review....review books are a standard but research shows that they are
not the best way for many students to review. Shouldn't students have
a choice?

Teachers have the responsibility to prepare
students appropriately for those exams. Students also have a
responsibility to take advantage of review opportunities and to
prepare on their own. The success of both is evident in the district's
high passing rates.

My math teacher told me cell phone are not

Cell phones are not allowed in the testing

store backpacks, purses, etc. during the exam.

I heard that no other schools have to buy review
books for regents (in the upstate NY area) besides us. Why is that?

Different schools do many things differently. At Shen, review books
are purchased by students because they are personal, consumable items.

Will you receive a zero
for a Regents exam if you don't show up? If so, is this true even if

classes.

This isn't really a rumor but I’m in math
applied 2 and I honestly think I am ready for the math A Regents but
my teacher says I have to take it in January can I opt to take it this
summer?

At the conclusion of Applied II, students are
only 2/3 the way through the Math A curriculum. While it is possible
that the student may pass the Regents exam after Applied II, it will
be very difficult to score at a level that reflects their true
mathematical ability. The student will have the best possibility of
obtaining their best score after the curriculum is completed and a
professionally designed review of all math A has been delivered.
We do not recommended students take the state assessment until the
entire course sequence is completed.

CALCULATORS
Posted on September 9, 2008
My child is taking
Geometry Honors this year and the teacher recommends the TI 84+
Silver. However last year in Algebra Enriched there was no
recommendation other than to purchase the TI 84+. If it is necessary
in 10th grade why isn't this addressed when originally purchasing it?
Is the class going to be taught with the use of the Silver edition
putting my child at a disadvantage?

The difference between the TI-84+ and the
Silver Edition is memory capacity. Some students find the extra
memory desirable. There are many TI downloads that can be placed on
the calculator. The students also use the memory for loading games.
The TI-84+ is sufficient for all math classes.
Posted on June 5, 2008
Please provide the make and model numbers of the
calculators that would cost $140 each! Also, please provided the
specifications outlined by the State Education Department for the math
Regents curriculum that make this particular calculator a requirement.

We recommend the TI-84+. Target has the TI-84+
for $110. If you want the upgraded silver edition it is $129. You
can find the TI--83+ many places for under $100. This is similar to
the 84+ but not as powerful. The calculators go on sale often and can
be purchased for less on Ebay. Go to:
http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/osa/mathre/interalg-memo07.pdf for
guidelines on the new state tests mandating calculator use.

Why does the district
require families to purchase scientific calculators that cost more
than $100 when the NYS Education Department says the school district
should be providing the calculators because they are required for the
educational program?

The district has purchased sets of these
calculators to be used in the classroom for all math classes. In addition, calculators are
available for students to borrow in math classes that require the use
of the calculator on the Regents exam
(algebra I).
Posted on June 25, 2008
I have a question about the calculators. What
should you do if you can't afford this very expensive calculator? I
had spoken to a faculty member and I was told that he had to purchase
it for his child. No help what so ever. There are a lot of lower
income families that can't afford it. Is there enough to borrow and
will it be able to come home for homework. Do I buy food and gas or
the calculator?

For the graphing calculators required for the
Regents exam (algebra I), students/families have a choice: they can purchase
their own or the district will provide one for use.
Posted on June 12, 2008
I have reviewed the mandate that your subsequent
response points to and it does not state that graphing calculators
must be available for all MS and HS students - just that they must be
available to all students when they are taking the Integrated Algebra
Regents Exam. Can you further explain the interpretation of the
mandate to warrant the purchase of calculators extended to all MS and
HS students?

First and foremost, we are not purchasing
calculators for use by all middle school and high school students,
only enough for students to use when taking algebra. However, you are
correct that the mandate only requires that we have graphing
calculators available at the time of the exam. But, the guidelines
also state that students may not share calculators at the time of the
exam. Thus, we need a one-to-one correspondence of calculators to
algebra one students at the time of the exam. Moreover, it would be
imprudent to provide the students a calculator at the time of the exam
that they have not used routinely during the school year. Our
textbooks are selected with graphing calculator exercises woven
throughout. When students have access to these calculators, they can
use this tool daily in class, as well as, on homework problems. As
students matriculate through the math sequence, the graphing
calculator tool becomes indispensible. The algebra two course calls
for calculator use daily.
Posted on June 11, 2008
Which calculators is Shen buying - TI83 or
TI84? And I thought it was only for some high school math classes,
not middle school. Can you please clarify?

Only students taking Enriched Algebra at the
middle schools (an accelerated course) will be using the TI-84
calculators purchased by the district.
Posted on August 1, 2008
I see that teachers are responsible for
ordering calculators for student use this year. Does this include the
TI-83 and TI-84 calculators required for Math B?

Teachers are not responsible for ordering them,
the math department has already taken care of it.
They will be available for students who are not able to purchase their
own this fall.
