There are College level courses in all four languages taken after LOTE

Considering the economic times, it is understandable that people are
concerned about taxes. The average taxpayer pays $3,500. For a family
with a child in school that equates to $3.00 an hour to have a single
child educated at Shen ($3,500/180days/6.5hours per day= $2.99). As a
school district, we strive to balance the needs of our students and
parents with the needs of our taxpayers who have no children in our
schools. That is why parents are asked to supply personal and/or
consumable items that their child will use during the school year.

The library is available to students, but has
limited seating. The computer labs are often open early as well.
Your daughter should check with her teachers to find out which ones
are in school as early as she is and ask to make arrangements to find
a place in their room, prior to homeroom. Many teachers also
work with students in their workroom area prior to school.

According to the parent
portal -- to get a "95" on a report card requires a grade a 94.500.
Does this mean if you have a 94.500(+) average, you get to wear a
medal at graduation?

Report card grades and cumulative averages are
not the same. They normally don’t round up or down a cumulative
career average for graduation recognition (gold cords or medals) or
NHS induction.

At the High School East
open house it was mentioned that they are trying to separate the three
grade levels to some extent in order to promote a "home base" for each
grade. I think this is a fantastic idea, because the school is so
large. Hopefully this will offset the feeling of being lost and never
seeing a familiar face, especially when you are a sophomore. My
concern is that I also heard that some of the teacher don' t support
the idea. I am not sure why, but as a parent who went through a very
tough sophomore year with my child I recommend you continue this
policy.

We are happy that you and your child are
having a good experience with many of the classes being clustered in
parts of the HSE building. The purpose, primarily, was to provide
teachers the opportunity to collaborate easier, reduce time spent
between classes traveling by students and to provide a smoother
transition for 10th grade students new to the building. The
administration will continue to evaluate this approach. In addition,
we are not at all aware of lack of support for this. While some
expressed reservations last year about this idea, the faculty is
continually concerned about creating a better learning environment for
students. Let's hope that this clustering is a step toward that goal
of creating a better learning environment.

Why does Shen not offer
more college level courses through the University in the High School
Program? The course are approximately 1/3 the cost of the Syracuse
University classes. They have a large number selections- including
those offered through Syracuse.

The high school presently offers over 25
college level/credit courses and is investigating the potential for
more courses for the future.

Does the HS keep
statistics on how many students are accepted vs. how many apply to
specific colleges?

We rely on students to give us that
information because not all colleges provide it to our school. So,
while we do keep those statistics, we do not know who accurate they
are.

What is this program
that people are doing where they go to Hudson Valley for their senior
year of high school and still graduate with Shen at graduation?

It is not the norm, but some seniors prefer to
attend HVCC to complete their NYS high school diploma requirements.
Students are considered high school students even though they attend
HVCC. HVCC has an application that needs to be filled out. See your
counselor for more information.

My daughter is 18. Is it necessary for me to sign Field Trip Emergency
Consent forms? Or can she legally act on her own behalf?

While legally,

permissions and to be available to school staff in case of an
emergency and to discuss academic and disciplinary issues.

Why are high school east students not aloud to
go to the courtyard during study hall? what if they had a pass to the
library and then go to the courtyard by the doors in the library? they
have enough people to watch.

Students are not allowed in the courtyard
during study halls because that is a time provided to students to take
care of academic responsibilities and the courtyard is not conducive
to that.

Why are we not the
plainsmen any more? If we still are then why do we not have an Indian
or some thing of that nature as our mascot not a horse.

Shenendehowa loosely translated means “great
plains.” That is why we ARE still the Plainsmen. We stopped using the
Native American mascot/logo many years ago because many Native
Americans expressed concerns about its use. Since then, the
Commissioner of Education has also mandated that schools stop using
Native American mascots and logos. In the meantime, students asked if
they could develop a new mascot. Mascots were designed by students and
then the entire student body voted and selected the horse.

What is the Math Science
Technology Academy? Is it just a new semester long
interdisciplinary course that students can take in high school in
addition to their other courses?

MST Academy is a full year integrated program
of Math, Science, and Tech. It will be three periods of
instruction per day in a student's schedule. The program
is designed to provide students with the 3rd unit of math and the 3rd
unit of science required for graduation as well as an additional
elective credit in Technology. Approximately 50 - 60 juniors
and/or seniors will be admitted to the academy and it will be
co-taught by 3 teachers (one from each department...Math, Science, and
Technology.)

How come administrators
have access to YouTube but students don't? It seems very unfair to me.
You guys make the rules, so why can't you follow them?

Administrators and teachers have access to
YouTube so that it is available for use in the classroom when
appropriate. It is filtered for students because there are many things
on it that are inappropriate for a school setting.

Why are spring sports and the senior prom, not
featured in the high school yearbook of that year?

The yearbook goes to print before the spring
sports and proms have taken place. Therefore they are not generally a
part of the publication. Is it time for us to consider a video
yearbook so that the entire year's activities could be included?

How come all the
bathrooms in the high school are locked in the morning besides the one
near the main entrance? It is very inconvenient for people who need to
use the restroom with the overcrowding in the only one that is open!

The bathrooms are opened at 7:30 am. The
exceptions are those located at the main entrance. This is due to an
inability to supervise the other bathrooms until 7:30 am.

Has the district
considered constructing additional exits from the student parking lot
at HSE to reduce congestion before and after school?

The district has incorporated a bypass lane in

Adding more exits that would just end up on the same road would not
really help.

Thanks

The school store is open the last two periods

make such purchases. Candy is sold at the conclusion of the lunch
periods.

The halls at high school
east are always so crowded, and it's hard to get from one building to
another in five minutes, especially if your in gym, will you ever
change that five minute time limit?

High School East is crowded, but not over
capacity. While it is difficult at times to navigate the hallways,
most students can get to their classes on time if they manage their
time between classes efficiently. Changing the five-minute passing
time is not a consideration at this time. However, the administration
is looking at scheduling patterns to help alleviate this concern.

current student at HSE, and I was wondering if it is really necessary
to have tables set up behind the main cafeteria for members of the
Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force? I think that there is enough
propaganda with out them pushing flyers into my face.

Yes, it is
necessary. For the same reasons, both legally and otherwise, that the
district allows colleges to visit the school and provide literature;
the district also has an obligation to our military service branches.

Why do students in high school

The district has a legal responsibility to
ensure the safety and security of all students. We trust and hope that
positive behaviors that are learned at home are practiced in school
making the "supervision" of high school students a mere technicality.

Why is there a ban on all card games in the high school cafeteria?
What difference does it make if nobody is gambling on a non-face card
game?

It is difficult for staff members to determine whether or not the
students are playing cards for the purpose of gambling. Therefore,
card playing is not allowed during the school day. In addition, the
students' time might be better spent in other ways of socializing or
completing school work.

What is school policy regarding food and drink in the classroom? P.S.
can I use the response in my March 2008 article for the Shen Pen

Food and drink are not generally allowed in the classroom. However,
there are certain lessons related to the cultures of other countries
that are enhanced by food and therefore are permissible. In addition,
teachers occasionally use food as a source of motivation or prize for
some students, which is also allowed. And yes, you can use it for the
Shen Pen.

Why does the high school have 40 minutes in the beginning of the day
of free time? Wouldn't that time be more effectively spent in an
elective class, study hall, or just plain starting school later, or
ending it earlier?

Buses drop students off at 7:10 a.m. and school starts at 7:40 a.m.
This is so that the buses can drop at the high school and begin the
next run for elementary schools. Currently, the district is conducting
a transportation study looking at availability of buses and the impact
on the start and dismissal times of all the schools. That being said,
it is not a full 40 minutes by the time students get into the school,
go to their lockers, etc. And, not all students take the bus. So, many
arrive at school much closer to the start of school.

The decision to offer additional honors-level classes is made each
year around December/January. Discussions involve faculty,
administration, guidance and student/parental input. In the past,
there has not been a great deal of feedback from either parents or
students to suggest the need for additional English honors for gr. 10
students. However, if you believe more should be offered, please

Why can't we work in
collaborative groups or listen to ipods during study hall?

The Code of Conduct prohibits use of
electronic devices during the school day.
Such devices include, but are not limited to:
Walkmans, MP3 players (audio listening devices), cell phones, Palm
Pilots, cameras or any other instrument that can be used to transmit
images, sound or information from one source to another. Such devices
shall not be used during the school day from the time a student enters
the school building until dismissed; except when part of classroom
instruction or other authorized activity.
If students need to complete a collaborative
assignment during study hall, arrangements can be made by speaking
with the study hall monitor, teacher or administrator.

Is the high school using
Small Learning Communities? Some of the students seem to think that
they are.

The main principal of Smaller Learning
Communities is the notion of personalizing a large school environment.
There are many ways to do so this and the high school has made major
efforts including a greater administrative presence throughout the
building, an attempt to minimize the distance students need to travel
between classes, and a new reception desk in the main entrance. There
are specific programs that are being recommended for next year, such
as the Math/Science/Technology initiative that will continue these
efforts to further personalize the high school learning environment.

Why does the high school
start so early, especially in light of all the studies that have been
done that indicate that teenagers need more sleep?

The start of the high school day is based on
the following factors: it coordinates with
other school districts for interscholastic athletic schedules; it
provides the time needed for after school for other activities such as
extracurricular clubs, academic support, jobs, etc.; and it helps some
families by ensuring that older students arrive home before younger
siblings.

maintain adequate supervision of our students. Seniors are allowed to
walk alone but with the permission of an adult through the pass
system.

Why can't students print
projects on color ink without a teacher's permission?

Because students were printing a vast majority
of their papers in color, even when it was not necessary. Since the new procedure was instituted, printing in
color has been reduced from 3,00 sheets per month to 700 sheets per
month. This represents a considerable savings on printing cost over a

I heard that at least
two students who were suspended or expelled from Shen are now being
tutored at the library? Is this true and/or is it being paid with
taxpayers money? If so, why?

Education Law 3214 provides that after
suspending a student, the school district must take immediate steps to
provide that student with alternative instruction is the student is of
compulsory education age. We generally try to do so at mutually
agreeable sights such as the library. However, sometimes the tutor

Graduation
Requirements

If a senior student
receives just 5 credits this year (including all the required
classes), and it amounts to exactly 22 credits, can h/she still
graduate without the 5.5 credits required for full time status?

Any question regarding graduation should be

transcript to accurately answer the question.
Posted on April 8, 2008
Is it true that if a
senior fails 2 classes they are not allowed to graduate even if they
have the required number of credits and all required classes

courses for a diploma, s/he will graduate.
Senior
Pranks/skip day
Posted on May 8, 2008
If several of the seniors do a rather safe and appropriate senior
prank would they get in trouble? Because their is much talk about not
being able to graduate if a senior prank is carried out. Please clear
this up.

With more than 2,500 people in HSE, there are
no pranks that would be appropriate. Therefore, the administration
will treat these according to the Code of Conduct. Consequences can
range from warnings to detentions to possible exclusion from certain
events, including graduation.

The college acceptances has been required. The High School uses it to

have accepted Shen students. Scholarship information is optional, but
if a student accepts a scholarship and does not report it, it will not
be printed on the graduation program.

Why are so many juniors allowed to drive and
park at school when others are denied? It seems that when these
juniors get to 11th grade all of a sudden they can't take a bus for
some reason.

There are a limited number of student parking
spaces. Only seniors who have met the criteria and some juniors, with
special circumstances considered by the administration, are allowed to
park on campus. If others are parking who have not met the criteria,
they are doing so in violation of the parking rules and guidelines set
by the Parking Committee put together last year to make
recommendations.
Posted on May 8, 2008
Will the Junior class
rankings be listed anywhere to see who is what rank?

Rank for college application purposes is

class rank is not made public.

Our goal is to have full implementation of Fitness Gram next year.

My 9th grader was told
if they miss gym for any reason (like absent due to illness ) they
will have to make up the gym class. Since my student does not have any
study halls due to an extra elective she was told she will need to do
this over her lunch. Since you've already responded that NYSED says
that students are suppose to have a lunch period and why is this being
taken away for a legal absence?

The physical education recommends that if your
child does not have a study hall that he/she should talk to their
teacher to work around scheduling issues. The teachers in the
department do not recommend making up the gym class during lunch. If
you have a concern, contact the teacher.
Posted on May 30, 2008
How do students benefit from coed gym classes?
My daughter is in one now at the high school level and she complains
when they play some sports the guys do not toss the ball to the girls
at all and she gets frustrated because she is athletic as are many
others.

The Title IX regulation has always stipulated co-ed physical
education. The district is now moving more toward full compliance with
both the spirit and the intent of the law. Any issues with a
particular physical education class should be addressed with the
teacher or the academic administrator for physical education.
Posted on May 30, 2008
Why aren't physical education units like
"combative games" and football separated by sex? Why aren't classes
based upon skills?

Quite often the choices do not follow gender lines. In other words,
there are numerous examples of situations where a male student might
chose not to participate in "combative game" unit, while a female
student may choose to do so. Ultimately, the safety of the student and
the quality of the learning experience are the final determinants.
Posted on March 18, 2008
Is gym counted in your
average at high school east?

Physical Education grades are not averaged
into a student's grade point average.
Posted on March 27, 2008
Since gym isn't averaged
into GPA in high school, why isn't it just a pass/ fail class? The
grading seems to be somewhat random and inconsistent between gym
teachers and students seem to really resent graded assignments (like
papers on snowshoeing and ping pong playing tests) when the grade
doesn't count.

First and foremost, a gym is a location where
Physical Education takes place. One of the goals of the physical
education department is to raise the level of accountability for all
of its students. Assessment is essential to accomplish this goal. It
is one of the tools used to evaluate where the students are
developmentally, and what educators need to evaluate the program to
help students learn more productively. The physical education
department uses the N.Y.S. PE Profile as the basis for
assessment. While assessments and assignments are becoming more
consistent throughout the department, there is still some
individuality in the approach from various teachers. It is like any
other core class. As long as the teachers are working to achieve the
same intended outcomes, they have flexibility in their approach.
Posted on February 6, 2008
Why were physical
education class exemptions for varsity athletes rescinded?

According to the NYS Commissioner of Education
regulations, there are no exemptions from Physical Education. Athletes
should be exposed to the lifetime fitness aspects of physical
education curriculum which is different from the specific skills being
taught in their sport.
Posted on February 14, 2008
Why were physical
education classes changed to co-ed, no one seems to like it?

According to the NYS Department of Education:
"The Title IX regulation specifically prohibits
segregated classes in physical education (§86.34)." It goes on to say
that "Physical education course must be conducted coeducationally for
females and males. However, students MAY be separated by sex for two
reason:
1. When they are participating in contact
sports.
2. When grouping students by ability results in
groups which are composed predominantly of either females or males.
Sex separation during contact sports is not
mandatory; if it is used it should be used only during participation in
contact activities. If students are to be grouped by ability, it must be
assessed by objective standards for each major activity unit."

(Languages Other Than English) class during the next academic year?

Yes. German 9A and Latin 9A will be offered
for students in grades 10-12. To take these courses, students must be
enrolled in another LOTE course or have permission from the academic
administrator for LOTE.

How were the four languages that
are offered decided upon? I was surprised Italian did not make the
cut.

The four languages that we have in place have
been since the early 1970s. There was a Russian program for several
years in the 1970s but the program ended when the teacher left the
district. We may consider adding another language in the future.

Is it true that only certain Latin students may attend the field trip
to Italy?

No. The trip to Italy was open to all Latin students.

Why isn't there a
Spanish exchange program?

The LOTE Department has investigated
establishing an exchange program and may look into it again in the
future. However, at this time, they feel that our travel opportunities
to Spanish speaking countries (combined with Spanish cultural
opportunities through LOTE Fest and field trips) are the best option.

I have been late many times but only for the
beginning of homeroom. How can me missing the pledge matter? I still
learn the same things throughout the day, so why will that effect my
senior privileges?

The school day begins at 7:45 am. When
students arrive after that time, they are considered late to school.
Those are the rules.

My daughter claims that towards the end of last
year, many private school kids started visiting. Were these kids
registered on the visitor list to ensure safety in the school?

While we can not say for certain that this did
not happen or that the students were registered, we can tell you that
our policy does not allow visitors during the school day without an
appointment and without a purpose to be in the school.

What is the policy for former Shen students to
visit Shen?

They may visit after 3pm.

I heard that when a teacher sees a cell phone (maybe sticking out a
child's back pocket) or if they are found using their cell phone that
teachers freely snoop through their text messages and read them.
Isn't this a violation of privacy? Even principals admit it's done
but allow it.

Teachers do not freely look at students' text
messages. Students are not allowed to use cell phones during the
school day. This is a clear violation of the Code of Conduct.

Why are students in High School East not allowed to eat in the
courtyard?

Students are discouraged from eating in the
courtyard because our animal friends sometimes then create a nuisance
with the leftovers!

We hear so much about
the dress code suggestions, guidelines and rules...but never
consequences. What are they consequences and do they differ for
the severity of infraction?

The consequences are generally that students
are told to correct the violation of the dress code by changing the
inappropriate clothing. They may also spend time in supervised
study or if the student consistently disregards the directive of the
administrator, they would be given harsher penalties for
insubordination. In some cases, depending on the violation,
students may also be given a warning.

Why is nothing being done about kids smoking cigarettes in the high
school parking lot after school when everybody is leaving?

Smoking on school grounds is prohibited by
law. When students are found to be smoking, they receive an
appropriate consequence as part of the district's progressive
discipline procedure.

As I walk through the
halls, I see PDA everywhere. What is even more disgusting is that
staff members see it as well, but they pretend not to. They just walk
on by and pretend nothing's happening. Why is this?

Students are asked to refrain from public
displays of affection. All adults are asked to address this when they
see it and to report this to the appropriate administrator if it
continues.
