are club activities, along with their advisor and building
location, which are available for all students at the high
school. |
Anime/Manga Ms. Cloonan (East)
The Anime/Manga Club is a place for students who love Japanese
comics (manga) and animation (anime) to get together and share
movies and books. Films in a variety of styles are watched and
discussed. In addition, the club has and will continue to bring
in guest speakers to further students appreciation of the art
and cultural influences involved.
Art Club Mrs. Way and Ms. Suen (East) Mrs. Randazzo and Mrs.
Wheeler (West)
Students work on independent art projects, murals, and assist
teachers with art shows and competitions.
Beatles Club Mr. Strube (East)
They came by plane, they stole our women, they put barbers out
of business, they captured our hearts, they changed everything…
Come and join us as we listen to the music of the greatest rock
n’ roll band and look at their history, albums, songs, lyrics
and what the songs mean. The impact of the Beatles on pop music
cannot be overstated; they touched the lives of all who heard
them in deep and fundamental ways. Come and discover the magic.

Best Buddies Mr. Campe (West) and Ms. Suen (East)
The local chapter is associated with an international non-profit
organization. The group pairs students with mental retardation
in one-to-one friendships with their non-disabled peers. The
goal is to establish foundations for genuine friendships, thus
enriching the lives of all participants. Membership is open to
all 9th through 12th grade students. The club will meet monthly.
Breakfast Club Mr. Keyser (West)
This club promotes Character Education, including Time to Shine
and assists in projects
Cabaret Ms. Baird (West/East)
Cabaret is an event where students perform musical theater
selections of their choice in the Little Theater in the spring.
Through the year, students will meet after school to learn small
ensemble literature from various shows.
Chambers Group Ms. Baird (West/East)
Chambers Singers is a small group of singers that meet once a
week after school. In order
to participate, a student must be enrolled in the music program
and pass an audition. The group sings a variety of repertoire,
depending upon the make-up of the group. Literature varies from
The Renaissance to Do-Wop.

Girls’ cheerleading teams support football and basketball teams
at the JV and Varsity level. Students can participate for one
season.
Chess Club Mr. Soltys (East)
Shen chess is a club that gathers twice a week throughout the
school year to promote chess playing among the entire Shen
community. The emphasis is on game improvement, fair play, and
of course, fun. All are welcome.
Cinema Club Mrs. Killips (East)
This is for students who love film. You will have the
opportunity to watch/screen films and make a short film of your
own.
Class Council Senior Class Ms. Tubbs and Mrs. Beaulac (East)
Junior Class Ms. Fullenbaum and Ms. Keiper (East)
Sophomore Class Ms. Vidor (East)
Freshman Class Ms. Miller and Ms. Sauer (West)
Each class has a governing body. Membership is open to any
interested student. Members raise money for key activities for
the class.
Colorguard Mr. Zavadil and Mrs. Snyder
Students learn a series of precision dance programs
choreographed to music which are the basis of exhibitions and
competitions throughout the state during the school year.
Creative Writing Mrs. Burns (West)
Students like having the opportunity to write creatively and
have an audience of supportive peers to offer advice and
encouragement.
Crew Club Mr. George (West) and Mr. Austen
Active in both the fall and spring seasons, rowers practice five
days a week on the Mohawk River. Regattas are held on weekends
where the team competes with other schools and colleges.
DECA Mr. Murphy (East)
The Distributive Education Club of America is a leadership
organization for students in marketing/management. Students
learn more about marketing/management careers through
conferences and competitive events.
Drama Club Mrs. Myers (West)
Students audition for parts and put on an annual drama
production – typically held in the late fall.
Environment Club Mrs. Loria and Ms. Macro (West)
Environment Club is for students that are interested in
impacting the Earth’s environment in a positive way. We are
committed to making the school population aware of the impact
they have on the environment. The club is responsible for
recycling paper, cans, bottles, and other recyclables. Other
possible club activities are: gardening, going on hikes,
recycled art contests, etc.
FBLA Mr. Murphy (East)
The Future Business Leaders of America is open to all
Occupational Education students and provides them with an
opportunity to explore business related careers, participate in
community projects, and business competitions.
GLASS (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Spectrum) Mrs. Eckler and Mrs.
Marino (East)
GLASS is an alliance of students, faculty, and staff. Its
purpose is to celebrate diversity and to promote an environment
of acceptance in and out of school. The club proposes to create
a safe learning environment for people of all sexual
orientations and to promote gay-straight alliances. Members
would create awareness of current issues and support local,
state, and national functions. Specifically, the group intends
to participate in national events such as National Day of
Silence, and to cooperate with gay-straight alliances in other
local school districts to strengthen and broaden their influence
within the Capital District.
High School Musical Mrs. Myers (West)
Students audition for parts in the annual musical production of
a hit play to be performed in the Spring.
History Club Mrs. Quinn (East)
History Club members meet to research and prepare for the NYS
History Day competitions in March. History Club discusses
interesting topics from our past. Field trips, movie nights and
work on projects is the business of the club. Anyone interested
in history is welcome!
Homework Club Ms. Sauer, Mr. Keyser, Ms. Hafter, Mr. Boynton,
Mrs. McTiernan (West), Mr. Silverman (East)
Homework Club provides all 9th grade students with a chance to
work independently or with
fellow students on homework. It is also a unique opportunity for
students to work one-on-
one with peer tutors from High School East or receive help from
teachers in all core subject
areas.
Inernatioanl Club Mrs. Tangirala (East) and Mrs. Delehanty
(West)
International Club aims to provide a place of dialog for Shen
students from other countries and for students whose parents are
from other countries. We seek to educate others in the Shen
community about other cultures, to promote respect, tolerance,
curiosity and interest in each others’ cultures and countries.
In this way, we seek to promote better understanding and
communication between multicultural students and the general
Shen population. We meet monthly to discuss and to listen to
presentations about countries; we also participate in the ESL
potluck and talent show at the end of the school year.
Key Club Mr. Dunham (East)
Organized to promote pride and service to school and community,
students participate in activities such as working as Open House
guides, Senior Citizen dinner, Toys for Tots, walkathons and
other fund raisers.
Leo Club Mr. Choi (East)
LEO Club is a division of the Lions Club dedicated to assisting
the blind. The acronym LEO stands for Leadership, Experience,
and Opportunity. The main goal of the club is to provide
services to the Shenendehowa community. Students meet the first
and third Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Library Club Ms. Malizia (West) Mrs. Powell and Mr. Davidson
(East)
Student volunteers support the library by filing books,
preparing materials and assisting the librarians with a variety
of tasks to include book discussions and book sharing.
Literary Magazine Ms. Kirkpatrick (East)
Publishes a literary magazine of students’ original works of
fiction (short stories and poems)
LOTE (French Club) Mrs. Tangirala and Mrs. Thompson (East)
The purpose of the French Club is to promote and celebrate
French language through fun and French-speaking activities such
as movies, food, and other activities proposed by the students
of the club.
LOTE (GAPP) Mrs. Stracke (East)
Exchange program between students at the high school and
students in Germany.
LOTE (German Club) Mr. Hutson (West)
A club for everyone that enjoys the German culture. We see
movies, cook, play games, go on field trips – anything related
to the German culture.
LOTE (Latin Club) Mrs. Sugarman (East)
Students who are in Latin 9-12 are encouraged to join. There are
a variety of activities such as: decorating tee-shirts with
Latin expressions, watching Roman culture movies, helping
prepare for the annual Roman Banquet, assisting in a service
project in the area and having a game night. The year opens with
a pizza party and concludes with a dinner at a local Italian
restaurant.
LOTE Peace Program (France) Mrs. Bonventre (East) and Mrs.
Gordon (West)
Exchange program between Shen students and students in France.
The High School East and High School West Programs are two
separate programs.
LOTE (Spanish Club) TBA (East) and Mrs. Prendergast (West)
Spanish students in grades 9-12 are invited to join the Spanish
Club. Last year, we hosted movie nights, had a quesadilla party,
tutored middle school students and enjoyed dinner at a local
Mexican restaurant. This year will be even better. Come explore
the culture of Spanish-speaking countries at the Spanish Club.
Math Team Mr. Clements (East)
This club fosters a spirit of competition among students by
competing with other schools in math contests at the local and
state level
Mentoring Program Mr. Silverman (East)
The goal is to improve school performance and/or social
interactions. This program pairs a high school student with a
6th grader on a weekly basis. They also go to Beacon Pointe to
work with Alzheimer patients.
Mock Trial Mr. Stryker (East)
Students compete in mock trials designed by the New York State
Bar Association. Weekly meetings are held.
Music Honor Society – TRI M Mrs. Mars (East)
The chief aims of the Tri-M Music Honor Society are to foster
greater interest in the overall music program as well as to
provide more opportunities for personal musical growth and
expression. Students are selected for membership into the
society on the basis of musicianship, scholarship, character,
cooperation, leadership and service to this school and
community.
National Honor Society Mrs. Strait and Mrs. Lynch (East)
This organization is open to seniors who are selected at the end
of their junior year based on their average (90 or higher),
character and leadership in classes and activities. The students
volunteer as peer tutors, assist selling tickets at games and
organize a social event in the winter.
Odyssey of the Mind Mr. Reynolds (East)
This club tests the critical thinking abilities of its members.
Students have to solve a complex problem that usually involves
the construction and design of a vehicle. The students have to
select a theme for their problem and be part of that theme
themselves. They will compete on a regional, state, and national
level for the chance to test their thinking skills and to win
some scholarship money.
Ping Pong Mr. Caldero (East)
This is a club where a group of students who enjoy learning,
playing and having fun play ping pong. The more experienced
players compete amongst themselves.
Prayer Club Mrs. Strait (East)
The club meets regularly before and after school to offer
students the opportunity to share and grow in their faith.
Meetings are open to all students interested. Morning
announcements are made regarding meeting dates and times or
students can check out the club’s bulletin board in the hall by
the Class Assistant Principals’ office in the East building.
Respect Club Mr. Mars and Mrs. Mars (East) and Ms. Hulme (West)
By bringing together students of different backgrounds and
opinion, this group fosters respect for every individual’s
talents and creativities. The group meets weekly to plan
engaging activities for all the students that will encourage
tolerance, acceptance, and respect in the school’s environment.
SADD Mrs. Barbaro (East) and Mr. Keyser (West)
Students Against Destructive Decisions work to prevent drinking
and driving accidents by sponsoring speakers, demonstrations and
safe spring activities.
SCARCE Mr. Klassen and Mrs. Coons (East)
This environmental club educates students, staff and community
on environmental issues through speakers (Earth Day) and
recycling programs.
School Store Mrs. Kelly (East) and Mrs. Kopchick (West)
The bookstore provides a service to students by selling school
supplies and review materials.
Science Club (Biology) Mr. Rinella (East)
Students will actively decide the focus of the Botany Lab with
emphasis on the interactions of both the flora (plants) and
fauna (animals) housed within the Botany Lab. Attention will be
directed to the care and propagation of the living specimens
while analyzing the biological principles that are created in
the mini-environments within the Botany Lab.
Science Club Mr. Boynton (West) and Mr. Nagle (East)
Science Club is a partnership program with High School juniors
and seniors mentoring elementary school students by doing simple
science activities.
SFA Senate Mr. Silverman and Mrs. Radko (East)
The Student-Faculty-Administration Senate governs the high
school and provides a number of services such as voter
registration, student guides, lost and found, fund raising for
charity and liaison with the Board of Education and PTSA.
Shen Dance Team Mrs. Preston (Gowana)
Students entertain with half-time routines at home football and
basketball games to promote school spirit. They also perform at
various community events and competitions.
Shen Tv Mrs. Killips (East)
Not unlike the Shen Pen, but presented through a different
medium, the Broadcast Club will report stories to the Shen
student body over the cafeteria and lobby televisions. The
content to be covered, which must be determined by students,
will likely include school events, athletics, investigative
pieces, student/staff/club/team profiles and school-related
news, to name a few. Members of the club will serve in any
number of capacities, including camera persons, interviewers,
script writers, script editors, video editors, and on-camera
personalities.
Ski Club Mr. Kane and Mrs. Somogie (East)
Students travel to Jiminy Peak Ski Resort in Massachusetts on a
charter bus to and from school. They ski or snowboard and may
take lessons to learn or improve their skills. Equipment may be
rented if necessary. They return to the High School between 9:00
and 9:30 pm.
Speech & Debate Mr. Rider (West) and Ms. Jackson (East)
This club offers training and competition in oral communication,
logical reasoning, research skills and persuasive techniques in
an interscholastic competitive atmosphere.
Student Newspaper/Shen Pen Mrs. Carey (East) and Mrs. McTiernan
(West)
The purpose of the student newspaper is to publicize information
about the people and events of Shenendehowa High School East and
West. Students cover school and athletic events, write opinion
articles and take photographs for publication. They are also
trained to do page design and layout as part of pre-press
requirement.
Student Fashion Society Mrs. Sayers (West)
If you would like to be creative with clothing and fashion, meet
new friends and have some fun after school, you should join the
“Student Fashion Society” Club. We will learn how to use a
sewing machine and then decide together what projects we would
like to tackle. Some choices are: sewing a new item, embellish
an existing item or creating something new from a recycled
product.
Technology Club Mr. Kane (East)
Students work with technology teachers on special projects and
competitions related to energy, solar car, US First robotics and
the house construction project.
US First Robotics Competition Mr. Kane (East) and Ms. Barra
(Acadia)
The FIRST Robotics Competition is an exciting, nationwide
competition that teams professionals and young people to solve
an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive way.
The program is a life-changing, career-molding experience – and
a lot of fun. For the past 11 years Shen has participated in
this event to have engineers show students how to take a concept
and turn it into a robot that measures 36”x30”x60” and a weight
of 130 pounds to compete against other robots in a “friendly”
battle (not battlebots).
World of Difference Mrs. Heller (East) and Mrs. Myers (West)
The World of Difference Peer Training Program is designed to
infuse the ideals of diversity within the school community.
Yearbook Mrs. Somogie - Advisor (East) and Ms. Hafter and Mrs
Zielinski (West)
Students plan and edit the annual written and pictorial account
of the school year. Staff members take pictures, write copy,
plan layouts, and edit the journal before publication and sale.
Youth Court/Peer Mediation Mrs. Lynch (East)
Youth Court is a program designed to train student volunteers to
perform the roles of judge, clerk, prosecutor, defender,
foreperson and jury members in a peer sentencing court. Youth
Court is sponsored in collaboration with the Saratoga County
Prevention Council.
