Dear
Parents/Guardians,
While some of our neighbors in surrounding communities are
shoveling out from the recent snowstorms, our students and
teachers are knee-deep in their academic pursuits preparing
for success on Advanced Placement, regents and final exams.
This is a critical time of the school year. It is vital that
those who have not done well during the first semester,
refocus so that they might pass their course(s). It is also
important for those students who have had a successful first
semester to continue to stay motivated and to keep their
momentum leading into the final marking period.
The month of March brings us to the 2nd Annual March
Madness. It is a program designed to allow our faculty and
staff the opportunity to highlight the daily good works of
our students. Those students who are recognized by their
teachers or by staff members will receive a coupon that may
be entered into a raffle on Fridays during March for prizes
such as movie tickets, gift cards and food. It is a nice
diversion from the anxiousness of wanting the winter to end,
but knowing that March doesn’t always leave “like a lamb.” I
hope you ask your son or daughter about the program.
Finally, as usual, we have many important activities and
dates you should highlight on your calendar. One such
activity occurs on Wednesday, March 24th from 5-7 pm at the
Pasta Factory Restaurant. The Latin Club will earn 20% of
sales when customers present a promotional flier on that
night. Fliers may be picked up at both HSE and HSW. I hope
you join us on the 24th.
As always, I appreciate your cooperation and support of our
program. Please do not hesitate to contact me with comments,
questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Donald Flynt

The 21st
Semi-Annual Irish Fest, to celebrate the end of the First
Semester Senior Irish Literature course,
taught
by Deborah Bouchard and Patricia Neiswender, was held on
Friday, January 15, 2010, in the High School East Building.
Teachers, staff, Board Members, District Office Personnel,
parents, and grandparents were invited to share the event
with the 175 seniors who take the course. The seniors, all
wearing their originally
designed Irish Fest T-shirts, showcased their projects of
castles, cottages, Irish family crests, "Irish" videos,
Irish family trees, Celtic Crosses, Celtic designed
furniture, original Irish poetry, scenic Irish paintings,
Celtic mythology drawings, and Irish Recipe Books. Delicious
Irish cakes, cookies, brownies, scones, soda bread, and corn
beef,
and
authentic Irish tea were all offered to the guests to enjoy
while they viewed the projects in the High School East
Satellite Cafeteria. The students then continued their
celebration in the auditorium with two hours of performances
from the students which included Irish Step Dancing, Irish
songs, acoustic guitar and violin performances of many Irish
favorites, such as "Danny Boy" and "Wild Irish Rover."

School
attendance is both a right and a responsibility.
Shenendehowa High School recognizes that consistent school
attendance, academic success, school completion, and success
in the workplace have a direct correlation. Inconsistent
attendance will likely have a negative impact on
achievement.
Student
Responsibilities –
-
You must
arrive to school on time. School begins at 7:40 a.m. and
you are expected to be in homeroom by 7:45 a.m. Seniors
with late arrival are to sign-in at the front desk and
must attend their first scheduled class on time.
-
You must
attend classes (HR, Periods 1 – 9) on time and every day
that school is in session.
-
Students
must meet with teachers to request make-up opportunities
after an absence.
-
Please
remind your parent(s) that they are expected to notify the
High School Attendance Office (881-0312) if you are
absent, tardy or departing from school early.
Make-Up Work
Procedures- Upon returning to class following an absence,
tardiness or early departure, it is your responsibility to
consult with your teacher(s) to make arrangements to make-up
missed work, assignments and/or tests. You should have
already been made aware of your teacher’s make-up work
policy at the beginning of the year/course. Work missed
during a “skip or unexcused absence” from class may receive
reduced credit or no credit.
High School
Staff and Administration will continue to be diligent at
maintaining accurate records of attendance, absences,
tardiness, or early departure (class or school) of each
student. An absence, tardiness or early departure will be
entered as “excused” or “unexcused” along with the district
code for the reason. The following events are considered as
legal reasons for excused absence or tardiness according to
NYS Education Law: personal illness or injury, death in
family, impassable roads or weather making travel unsafe as
determined by town, county or state highway officials,
medical appointments, religious observance, quarantine,
court attendance, approved cooperative work
program/internship/community service, other school approved
program/event, suspension from school, military obligation,
and college visits. Any other reasons will be considered
illegitimate and will be recorded as unexcused.
Please
remember that unexcused absences, tardiness and early
departures will result in disciplinary sanctions as
described in the Code of Conduct. Consequences may
include, but are not limited to, in-school suspension,
detention (after school or Saturday), and denial of
participation in interscholastic and extracurricular
activities. |

The
Shenendehowa PEACE (Partners in Educational And Cultural
Exchange) Program hosted a big
pot luck/pumpkin carving/
dance for exchange students and their guests from Montrouge.
PEACE hosts students, teachers and administrators from
France and we will travel to France in the Spring. In
October, they once again welcomed visitors from Collège and
Lycée Genevoix in Montrouge, France, our exchange schools
just outside Paris. For the two weeks families in our
community host the students and teachers who are accompany
them. Freshmen in High School
West host thirty-three ninth
grade French students, and juniors and seniors in High
School East host thirty-five French seniors. Guests attend
classes and explore the region and the Northeast on field
trips. Since 1995, the year the exchange between the two
schools began, these multicultural experiences have
increased our understanding of different cultures.
At HSE the teachers from France are Anne Coulon, Olivier
Barberousse, and
Frederique Houseaux. Their host teachers
are Karen Bonventre, John Choi, and Erika Clarkin. At HSW
the visiting teachers are Dominique Raynaud, Virgine
Sèchépine, and Thierry Dayras. Their host teachers are Carla
