Introduction

All teachers have experienced the following situation.

Teacher:  "Ok, class.  Today, we'll begin reading Lord of the
     Flies by William Golding."

Student:  "Hey, is there a movie?"

Teacher:  "Well, yes there is a movie, but it's not a very
good adaptation.  So, we'll be reading the book instead."

     Class:  (Collective moan)

Students:  (Mental note - visit Blockbuster today)

Which is better?  The movie or the book?  For many, the answer is easy.

The Internet Movie Database lists 6,612 titles of films "based-on-novel."  From "Jurassic Park" to "Forrest Gump," the halls of movie history are filled with legends that started as books - "Gone with the Wind,"  "The French Connection," "The Godfather," "The Silence of the Lambs," and "The Green Mile."

However, how true were these adaptations to the intent of the author?  This is where your journey begins.
