Overview

  • The object of this lesson is to learn more about Charles Dickens and the Victorian Era.
  • This lesson is appropriate for any high school English class.
  • The materials needed for this lesson include access to the Internet, Microsoft Word, construction paper and art supplies OR special programs like Publisher or PageMaker.

Introduction

As ninth-graders you are about to start reading one of the most famous, most beloved, and most difficult classics of all time.  It would help you to have some background information before you begin.  This project will help you get acquainted with Charles Dickens and the Victorian Era - the time period in which he lived and in which this story takes place.  Yes, it is research, but before you groan, take time to read the assignment and the topic choices (then you can groan).  This project is all about your interests and your ability to be creative.  You get to pick which topic you would most like to learn about, and put it into a brochure presentation that reflects your choice for color, pictures, facts, etc.  Take your time to enjoy this and be sure to ask any questions you might have.

Process

  • Choose a topic that has to do with the novel Great Expectations, from the grid below.
  • Research your topic in the computer lab:  Make sure to note source information; a works cited will be required.  You will have two days in the computer lab, anything you do not finish in those two days will need to be completed at home.  Your brochure is due one week from today.  Your presentations will be on the due date.
  • Create a "brochure" that conveys your newfound knowledge to your classmates.
  • Instructions for your brochure:
  1. All information should be typed
  2. You should include at least 10 facts about your topic
  3. You must provide a works cited with at least three sources
  4. You should include some decoration (pictures, etc.) - be colorful and creative
Please see the sample brochure I have created for layout only, all other decisions belong to you.
  • Once completed, you will present your brochure to the class, and then I will hang them on the wall.

Conclusion

This project was designed for you to have a better understanding of the novel we are about to read.  However, you have only researched one of the related topics.  It will be your job to pay close attention while each person is presenting their brochure, taking notes that you can use to refer back to while you read, and to study from before the unit test.

Good Luck and Have Fun!
