From Shenendehowa High School's Program of Studies

World Culture and Literature – Honors

World Culture/World Literature begins with a six-week review of the historical events of Ancient Greece and Rome through the Renaissance, with an additional study of the art and architecture of these time periods.  This is followed by a comprehensive study of Western and Eastern civilization from the Enlightenment to contemporary times.

The course presents the concept of civilization as a cumulative “tapestry” of social, political, religious, economic, and artistic components. To help achieve this, students will read and analyze such classics as Gulliver’s Travels, Frankenstein, A Tale of Two Cities, My Name is Asher Lev and Nectar in a Sieve, as well as excerpts from The Canterbury Tales, Dante’s Inferno and Henry V.  Additionally, they will be expected to evaluate works of art and architecture as reflections of significant values and historical events.

Projects include a variety of writing assignments, research-based activities, and oral presentations. Students in this course are expected to demonstrate strong reading, writing and critical thinking skills. World Cult./Lit. traditionally offers a field trip in May to a major museum in the area.
