Mark your calendar! Rehearsals have begun for Gypsy, to be performed Mar. 13-15 at Shenendehowa H.S. East.
Suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the musical is the story of her mother, Rose, and her dream of making her daughters, June and Louise, stars. In this journey through the 20’s and the Depression, they travel across the country like gypsies and eventually headline on the Orpheum vaudeville circuit. With a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the score contains such standards as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Small World,” and “Let Me Entertain You.” Rose’s opening line, “Sing out, Louise!” has become the catchphrase for stage mothers and directors.
Heading the Shen cast are Stephanie Gray as Rose, Britty Viazzi as Louise, Christina Manion as June, and Will Boyajian as Herbie. Others featured in the 47-member cast are Aaron Marquise as Tulsa, Ali Kerestly as Tessie Tura, Sarah Golley as Mazeppa, Laura Ambrosy as Electra, Jamie Burton as Baby June, and Kelsie Moinzadeh as Baby Louise.
The creative team includes Dora Myers, director; Peggy Hayes, assistant director; Ron Jacobs, producer; Adrien Gleason, vocal director; Martin Zavadil, conductor; Ali Kerestly, choreographer; and Drew Myers, set designer.
