The Studio in Art curriculum is based on the elements of art (line, shape, form, color, value, texture, space) and the principles of design (variety, unity, movement, balance, emphasis, rhythm) which we will explore as in introductory course. We will also focus on areas of art, history, aesthetics, and art criticism from our textbook to complement the variety of mediums such as paint, clay, pencil and charcoal in class projects.

In order to continue to develop artistic skills, students are expected to practice techniques in their sketchbooks which will be handed in four times each quarter. Five points (of thirty total) will be deducted for each day assignments are late. Sketchbook assignments will be given at the beginning of each quarter.

Grades will be based on:

Timely completion of class projects and sketchbook assignments

Goals and criteria are met for each class project, textbook, and assignment

Use of class time, effort, and following the class/school rules

Neatness, creativity, and aesthetic outcome

Final exam – counts as 20% of the yearly grade

Students will need to bring the following supplies for use in class:

A sketchbook, 9x12" or 11x14", white drawing stock, spiral bound (please no pads with gummed bindings – they fall apart)

A sturdy 2-pocket folder of binder with a pocket for class papers

A fine line black Sharpie marker

A pencil, basic #2 is fine – everyday!

A good kneaded soft eraser (gray type)

A set of 12 or more colored pencils (ex. Crayola or Prismacolor are good)

These supplies may be purchased at Michael’s, A.C. Moore, or most discount department stores. Students may use supplies from other classes and may keep them in their folders.
