| FRENCH | |
| French 7 | This is a 20 week introductory
course in French. At this level, special emphasis is placed on
developing communicative proficiency in understanding and speaking the
foreign language. At the same time, students will be introduced to the
culture and civilization of the respective countries where the target
language is spoken. Classes meet every day for the 20 week semester.
A final exam is given in class at the end of the course.

| French 8 | This is a 20 week continuation of
the introductory French course offered in 7th grade. Specific emphasis
is placed on further development of communicative proficiency in
understanding and speaking the target language. The proficiency gained
in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in 7th grade is
broadened and enriched. Students continue their study of the culture
and civilization of the respective countries where the target language is
spoken. Classes meet every day for the 20 week semester. A final
exam is given at the end of the course.

| French 9 |
This French course is for students who have completed the Middle School program. Emphasis is on developing strong communication skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The culture of the francophone world is explored as students study a variety of topics. Students may participate in the PEACE Program (Partners in Educational and Cultural Exchange) our exchange program with Lycée Genevoix in Montrouge, France. A school final examination will be administered in June.

As a continuation of the progression of courses begun in French 9, the goal of this course is to further communicative proficiency using current idiomatic French. There is continued practice in listening, speaking, reading and writing. French culture is taught through dialogs, readings and video presentations. A school final examination will be administered in June. Recommendation: A final average of not less than 75% in French 9.

| French 11 |
French 11 is designed for the student who has successfully completed French 10. Communicative proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing is developed to a more advanced level on a wide scope of topics taken from the New York State Learning Standards for Languages Other Than English. Cultural awareness is further developed through dialogues, readings, and video presentations. Students may participate in the PEACE Program (Partners in Educational and Cultural Exchange) our exchange program with Lycée Genevoix in Montrouge, France. The Comprehensive Regents Examination in French will be administered at the conclusion of the course in June. Recommendation: A final average of not less than 75% in French 10.

| French 12H / College |
This advanced course offers instruction in advanced grammar and composition in conjunction with SUNY curriculum standards. Students will cover a variety of topics designed to meet their interests and talents. They will read short stories, newspaper and magazine articles, prepare frequent written and oral exposes, and watch and discuss video presentations. A study of one major literary work is required. The course is conducted in French. Students may participate in the PEACE Program (Partners in Educational and Cultural Exchange) our exchange program with Lycée Genevoix in Montrouge, France. +As an option, students can receive College Credit. In conjunction with SUNY standards, with a final average of C and tuition payment, students will receive 4 credits on a SUNY transcript.

For students
who have completed the middle school program, this course offers further
study of German language and culture with continuing emphasis on
communicative skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. A school
final examination will be administered in June.

| German 9A- New for 2008/2009!! | This is a full year beginning German course that will be offered at High School East in the 2008-2009 school year. It is open to any high school student already enrolled in a LOTE course. The student must continue their first LOTE course while taking German 9A. Upon successful completion of this course, the student may choose to continue in the regular language sequence. This gives the students at Shenendehowa the opportunity to study a second Language Other Than English. |
| German 10 |
The goal of
the German 10 course is to further develop communicative proficiency using
current idiomatic German. There is continued practice in listening,
speaking, reading and writing. German culture is taught by dialogues,
readings and video presentations. Opportunities for a German Exchange
(German American Partnership Program- three week exchange and/or Congress
Bundestag Exchange- one year program) are available at the end of German 10
or 11. A school final examination will be administered in June.
Recommendation: A final average of not less than 75% in German 9.

This advanced course is designed to offer enrolled students a study of a variety of topics in order to meet their interests and talents. This includes grammar review and writing assignments in combination with the study of German literature, art, music, history and contemporary social issues. Audio/video presentations and guest speakers supplement the curriculum. +As an option, students may receive College Credit. In conjunction with SUNY standards, a final average of C and tuition payment, students will receive three (3) college credits on a SUNY transcript.

| Latin 9 |
For students who have completed the middle school program. Included in this course will be the continued study of vocabulary and the structure of the language as well as mythology and other areas of cultural awareness associated with the language. A school exam is administered in June.

| Latin 9A- New for 2008/2009!! | This is a full year beginning Latin course that will be offered at High School East in the 2008-2009 school year. | Latin 10 |
Latin 10 is designed for the student who has successfully completed the progression begun in Latin 9. The course will include a more advanced study of the structural analysis of Latin with continued emphasis on Roman civilization and culture, and Roman and Greek mythology. A school final examination will be administered in June. Recommendation: A final average of not less than 75% in Latin 9.

| Latin 11 |
As a continuation of the progression from Latin 10, this course continues the study of the structure of the language along with vocabulary, word derivation and Roman culture with emphasis upon Roman literature. The Comprehensive Regents Examination is administered at the end of this course. Recommendation: A final average of not less than 75% in Latin 10.

| Latin 12H |
The Latin 12H course consists of a variety of components: Etymology and word derivation, introduction to the Romance languages, Latin dialogues, Roman art and architecture, monuments of Ancient Rome, reading a Greek and a Latin play in translation, Latin literature, and mythology. Students will make connections between the classical world and modern western culture.

The emphasis in this course is on continued development of communicative skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, and the study of Hispanic culture. Students in this level begin a three (3) year progression which prepares the student for the Comprehensive Regents Exam at the end of Spanish 11. A school final examination will be administered in June. |
| Spanish 10 |
Spanish 10 is designed for the student who has successfully completed Spanish 9. Its goal is the development of communicative proficiency using current idiomatic Spanish. | Spanish 12H / College |
Spanish 12 is a course designed for the student who has successfully completed Spanish 11. It is for students who wish to continue their study of Spanish, but not in the Honors level. The course of study is challenging and demands advanced use of the language while allowing for creativity of expression and utilizing a variety of resources at a less demanding level than the college course. Students will read a variety of literary works, discuss video presentations and prepare oral and written reports. There is also further instruction in grammar and composition. The course is conducted in Spanish. Requirement: Spanish 11 (Eleven) and a passing grade on the Comprehensive Regents Examination. Recommendation: A final average of not less than 75% in Spanish 11.

| Spanish I |
This course is designed to aid students who have not developed strong language skills in middle school. The emphasis is on the development of vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Cultural studies center on the Spanish-speaking world. This course begins a four (4) year progression which prepares students for the Comprehensive Regents exam at the end of Spanish IV. A final examination is administered in June.

| Spanish II |
Spanish II offers a further study of Spanish with continued emphasis on strengthening skills in listening and speaking, but with increasing emphasis on reading and writing. A final examination will be administered in June. Recommendation: A final average of not less than 75% in Spanish I.

| Spanish III |
The goal of the course is the development of communicative proficiency using structural analysis and conversational Spanish. There is added emphasis on reading and composition. Cultural awareness is further developed through dialogues, readings, and video presentations. A final examination will be administered in June. Note: Beginning with the Class of ’05, students will take the Comprehensive Regents Examination in Spanish IV. Recommendation: A final average of not less than 75% in Spanish II.

| Spanish IV |
This course offers a continuation of structural analysis of the Spanish language with continued practice in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Communicative proficiency is developed to a more advanced level and on a wider scope of topics taken from the New York State Learning Standards for Languages Other Than English. The Comprehensive Regents Examination in Spanish will be administered at the conclusion of the course in June. Note: Beginning with the Class of ’05, students will take the Comprehensive Regents Examination in Spanish IV. Recommendation: A final average of not less than 75% in Spanish III.

| SIXTH GRADE PROGRAM | |
| LOTE 6 | Students are introduced to four
languages-French, German, Latin, and Spanish during a 20 week course,
meeting every other day. During this exploratory experience, students
learn basic phrases and vocabulary in each language, study the origins and
development of languages, and explore verbal and non-verbal language as a
tool for communication. Students also sample foods, sing songs, and
complete projects which emphasize the culture of the countries where the
individual languages studied are used.
