Peace
Program
As
part
of
the
PEACE(Partners
in
Educational
and
Cultural
Exchange)
Program,
each
year
in
October
Shenendehowa
High
School
students
and
teachers
and
their
families
welcome
French
students
and
their
teachers
to
our
community. While
here
the
students
experience
life
in
an
American
family,
while
also
attending
classes
at
the
high
school
and
visiting
local
sites,
such
as
the
Empire
State
Museum,
Cooperstown,
the
Adirondacks,
the
Berkshires,
and
New
York,
Boston
and
Montreal.
In
April,
the
Shenendehowa
students
and
teachers
travel
to
Montrouge,
just
outside
Paris,
to
the
homes
of
their
correspondants,
and
the
experience
is
repeated
in
reverse. While
in
France
our
students
visit
sites
and
museums
in
Paris,
Normandy,
the
Loire
Valley
and
Champagne.
While
improvement
in
language
skills
is
the
most
obvious
benefit
of
this
exchange
program,
students,
teachers
and
their
families
on
both
sides
of
the
Atlantic
come
away
with
an
understanding
of
another
way
of
life,
as
well
as
a
deeper
understanding
of
their
own
country
and
themselves. It
is
not
easy
to
immerse
oneself
in
a
different
language
and
culture
so
far
from
home,
even
for
two
weeks. The
participants
in
the
PEACE
program
develop
special
friendships. We
hope
they
will
continue
to
give
and
share
hospitality
for
a
better
understanding
of
all
peoples,
not
only
in
foreign
countries,
but
here
at
home
as
well.
Students and teachers interested in participating in the PEACE program
in France should contact Mrs. Tangirala in High School East, 881-0310
x61715, or Mrs. Gordon in High School West, 881-0330 x62654.
The PEACE Program (Partners in Educational and Cultural Exchange)
Program was begun in 1989 through agreements between the French
Ministries of Education and Foreign Affairs and the New York State
Department of Education which linked secondary schools with schools in
the Paris area. Since 1996 the Shenendehowa High School has been paired
with the Cité Scolaire
Maurice
Genevoix,
a
combined
junior
and
senior
high
school
in
Montrouge,
France. This
program
is
now
sponsored
by
the
Bureau
de
Cooperation
linguistique
et
educative
of
the
French
Embassy
and
our
local
Shenendehowa
Rotary
Club. |
