Course Description
How is AP Biology different from Regents Biology?
- The AP Biology course is designed
to be the equivalent of a two-semester college introductory biology
course usually taken by biology majors during their first year.
- The college course in biology
differs significantly from the usual first high school course in biology
with respect to the kind of textbook used, the range and depth of
topics covered, the type of laboratory work done by students, the
pace, and the time and effort required of
students.
- In order to be successful, it is
essential that students become self-directed learners who have
developed effective study
skills.
What are the benefits of
taking AP Biology?
- After showing themselves to be
qualified on the AP Exam, some students, in their freshmen year, are
permitted to undertake upper-level courses in biology or to register for
courses for which biology is prerequisite.
- Other students may have fulfilled a
basic requirement for a laboratory-science course and will be able to
undertake other courses to pursue their majors.
What about laboratory work in AP
Biology?
- As with most college introductory
biology courses, one-fourth to one-third of the credit in AP
Biology at Shenendehowa is derived from laboratory work.
- Laboratory work for AP Biology at
Shen includes a set of 12
laboratories produced
by the AP Biology Development Committee.
- To allow students to show their
mastery of laboratory science skills and knowledge, each year some
questions on the objective portion of the AP Biology Exam and/or
one or more of the four mandatory essay questions may reflect the topics
and objectives associated with the 12 AP Biology laboratories.
