The leaves of coniferous (cone-bearing) trees such as pine, spruce, and fir are highly modified to form needles.  This helps prevent heavy snow from clinging.  Needles also have a thick waxy coating (cuticle) that helps protect leaf tissues from cold and harsh conditions.
