Honors Regents Earth Science General Information Sheet
TEXTBOOK
The textbook for this course is Earth Science, by Tarbuck and Lutgens. Periodically, you will have assignments from your textbook, but it is not necessary to bring your textbook to class everyday. I will let you know when you will need your textbook for class.
NOTEBOOK
Each student is required to have a 3-ring (loose leaf) binder. The binder can be for science only or can be included with other subjects in a larger version. It is absolutely necessary that your notebook is brought to class everyday and kept up to date. The notebook will be graded each marking period in the form of a test, so you will be responsible for all material covered in class, even if you are absent.
The requirements for the notebook are as follows:
1. Table of contents.
2. Pages numbered (upper right hand corner).
3. Headings on all pages.
4. Neatness.
5. All work completed (even if absent).
GRADING
Grading is on a “point basis”. Each marking period there is usually a total of 400-450 points. The points accumulated, are converted to a percentage and the numerical grade is recorded on the report card.
When absent, all work must be made up in a timely manner. The longer you wait, the less you will remember and your performance on make-up tests will suffer.
GRADE SHEET
All students are required to keep a record of their grades for each quarter on their grade sheet. At any point during the quarter, you can figure out your grade in the following way:
1. Add up your points.
2. Add up the total points.
3. Divide your points by the total points.
4. Multiply the result by 100.
HOMEWORK
Homework is like a practice session in an athletic event. Tests and quizzes are like the games. You might make mistakes on your homework, but you must minimize those mistakes on the tests and quizzes. When you get your homework back and we go over it in class, correct your mistakes so that you can use it to study from. Homework is worth 5 points. If you make an honest attempt at your homework, and do all that is required, you will receive full credit, even if some of it is wrong. Full credit can only be given if the assignment is handed in on the day it is due. You can hand in homework 1 day late for a maximum of 4 points. Homework cannot be handed in more than 1 day late. Partial credit will be given for homework that is not completely finished.

LABS
Labs are a requirement for the course and students cannot take the regents if they don’t have a minimum of 30 labs successfully completed. Usually we will do 40-50 labs during the course of the year. Labs will be treated in the same manner as homework assignments. They will be worth 5 points if handed in on time and the entire lab is complete. A lab can be handed in 1 day late for a maximum of 4 points. No labs will be accepted more than 1 day late. Partial credit will be given for labs that are not completely finished.
CLASSROOM RULES
Lateness - All students must be in the room by the time the bell rings.
Talking - There will be no talking after the bell rings. You will wait until the teacher is ready to begin
class. Only one person will speak at a time, whether it is the teacher or a student. This is
only common courtesy. If you wish to speak, raise your hand and wait to be called on.
Misconduct - There will be no horseplay or fooling around in science class. Disrespect to the
teacher or to other students will not be tolerated.
Unprepared - Students are to come to class with a pencil, pen, calculator and their notebook. If you
must go back to your locker to get any of the above items, your homework, or anything
else for class, you will be charged with an unprepared.
Violation of any of the above will be handled in the following way:
1st time - You will be given a second chance.
2nd time - That was your second chance.
3rd time - Automatic 3 in conduct on your report card (3 in conduct = inconsistent).
4th time - Automatic 4 in conduct on your report card (4 in conduct = needs improvement).
5th time - Automatic 5 in conduct on your report card (5 in conduct = unsatisfactory and
omission from the honor roll).
For each violation after 5, you will receive an office referral.
A conduct chart is kept for all students and each of the above applies only to one quarter. After each quarter, the slate is wiped clean and you will start all over again.
Bathroom Privileges - Each student will only be allowed to leave science class 3 times per quarter
to use the bathroom. The bathroom privilege should be used only for an
emergency. A record of use will be kept on the conduct chart.
Dismissal - The teacher will dismiss the class, not the bell. Class will not be dismissed until the
room is clean, all lab equipment is put away and all students are in their seats.
