WHO        Local Girls Excited about Engineering Mathematics and Computer Science (GEMS)
Day Long GEMS for High School Students
WHEN     Thursday October 4, 2007 -
WHERE    Russell Sage College Friday March 21, 2008 -  Sage College of Albany

WHAT     What is GE2MCS
The GE2MCS program is aimed at increasing the number of girls and women studying and entering technical careers in engineering, mathematics, and computer science. This multi-faceted program combines day-long programs on Fridays including hands-on workshops for middle and high school students, with Saturday morning programs focusing on careers and mentors. The day-long programs are designed for students and are open to teachers and guidance counselors, while the Saturday sessions are geared towards students and parents.

WHY        It All Adds Up
While the GEMS program's primary goal is to excite girls and young women about technically related fields, the program's secondary goal is to raise the awareness of teachers, guidance counselors, and parents of the study and career options available for their daughters, so that they can better facilitate those opportunities. This program series will be repeated over the course of five years to successfully track student outcomes and build greater exposure for these opportunities for students.

Let's Get Technical
Day-Long GE2MCS
Middle school students and high school students chosen by their teachers or guidance counselors will visit the Russell Sage College campus for a day and engage in age-appropriate hands-on workshops in engineering,
mathematics, and computer science.

Teachers and guidance counselors will participate in workshops and discussion forums on the issue of gender in the classroom, current topics in teaching these subjects, and the programs of study in these areas available at Sage.

All GEMS participants will also interact with SMaRT Women. SMaRT stands for Science, Mathematics, Research, and Technology, and is made up of young women attending Russell Sage College and pursuing degrees in fields such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry and forensic science. These students make wonderful role models for middle and high school girls.

Between morning sessions, panelists will discuss the variety of careers that require engineering, mathematics and computer science coursework.  The women panelists, including Russell Sage College alumnae, will share
their experiences navigating the transition from high school, to college, to the working world.

The day will wrap up with a tour of the picturesque Russell Sage College campus.
