Fertilization & Development Definitions:

    Fertilization:
Fertilization is the joining of the nucleus of a sperm with the nucleus of an egg.  At this moment,
the chromosomes of the sperm and the egg are combined forming a cell with twice the number
of chromosomes of the prior cells.  The chromosome number of a body cell for this species has
been restored to normal (that of the parents).

  Development:
Development refers to the stages following fertilization.  The single cell of the fertilized egg
undergoes repeated specialized cell divisions.  Initially these resulting daughter cells are all
alike, but soon specialization of cells starts to happen and different tissues, organs and
systems of the offspring start to form.
