B.  Charles Darwin ANSWERS
(controversial theory) with a silly acronym

              1.  (OLD)  Overproduction –
  Each  P O P U L A T I O N  produces more offspring than the
  E N V I R O N M E N T   can possibly support

           2.  (VERMONTERS)  Variation –
  Offspring are not all alike within a single  S P E C I E S  due to
  M E I O S I S and    G E N E     R E C O M B I N A T I O N

              3.  (CAN)  Competition
  (S T R U G G L E  for  E X I S T E N C E)  --  develops within a
  population due to shortages in resources (usually  F O O D or  S P A C E)

           4.  (NEVER) (N A T U R A L    S E L E C T I O N) or
 Survival of the F I T T E S T  --  (We said fittest NOT fattest!)
 Due to the  V A R I A T I O N  in a population that is competing for
 some natural resource, some members are better  A D A P T E D  (fit)
 to survive in a particular environment.    N A T U R E    S E L E C T S
for the most   F I T   individuals in a population.  In the case of beavers,
 Darwin felt nature selected for B I G   T E E T H

Which of the four lemmings pictured above (A,B,C or D) is most fit to
survive when chased by this arctic fox?)      __ALBINO  D __

...   A few lemmings (HOPEFULLY the smartest) will not make the
journey or the plunge and will be around for the next season.

        5.  (REPRODUCE)  Reproduction –
Surviving individuals who were most  F I T  transmit the successful
variations (characteristics or   A D A P T A T I O N S) which they
possess to their  O F F S P R I N G

Will the children produced by this sexy looking lemming most likely
resemble lemming A, B, C or D as pictured above?
_THE SILVER CHARMER C__   is the lucky lemming.
