6.  Speciation –

     Over time, the adaptation of traits better suited to new 
E N V I R O N M E N T S  creates new increasingly different  species
from one common  A N C E S T O R.  
Here, we see the radiating of
several  B I R D  species from one ancestor. 

 

  This radiating pattern of speciation is known as   D I V E R G E N T      
  E V O L U T I O N   or  A D A P T I V E    R A D I A T I O N.

         7.  Weakness of Darwin’s Theory - -
             a.   Darwin never suggested any explanation for the causes of  new  
                   V A R I A T I O N S   within a species.  
           b.   He did his investigations years before certain biological factors were
                 known.  These factors which lead to greater diversity are ...
                  (1)   M U T A T I O N S,
                  (2)   M E I O S I S,  or  
                  (3)   G E N E       R E C O M B I N A T I O N  during fertilization.
