        An early theory by J. LaMarck (b. 1801) –  said that change in a species
        is based on  N E E D

            1.  This was known as LaMarck's Theory of Use & Disuse

            2.  Whereas LaMarck’s theory was widely rejected even by the scientific
                community, its major function is to point out that C.  D A R W I N  
                was not the first person to propose that life on Earth changed over
