Now Hear This!

Radio Broadcasts from the Totalitarian States: Oral Presentations that reference one of the most important pieces of technology from the era.

Expectations:

1. Your report should:

1. Be 3-5 minutes long

2. Include sound effects, and music (bleeps, whistles, recorded songs, etc)

3. Have interviews with authentic characters of the time period

4. Define any unfamiliar word or abbreviation

5. Answer all questions or key ideas.

2. You must type out a transcript of your report.

3. You can change the title or format of the story from the one already outlined.

4. You must attach a bibliography with all sources used in researching your report.

Individual Reports: 40 points (based on oral presentation rubric)

Bibliography: 10 points (follow MLA format)

Soviet Union

Possible title	Questions that must be answered and ideas that must be covered.
1. “Debate between Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky”	How should Communism be spread? One country? Internationally? How did Stalin eliminate the competition?
2. “Economic Forecast of the first Five Year Plan and Stalin’s collectives”	Five Year Plan, Industry, Collectives, What were the objectives of the Five Year Plans? How can they be seen as totalitarian and unfair?
3. “The Secret Police: What you need to know”	NKVD, What were some of the policies of the secret police? What were the “show trials” and the “Great Purge?” Who did Stalin target in his attacks?
4. "Let's meet Joseph Stalin"	A Biography--Where and when was he born? What was his childhood and adolescence like? When did he rise to power? What is he most well known for? When did he die?

Italy

Possible Title	Questions that must be answered and ideas that must be covered.
1. “Breaking News from the March on Rome”	King Victor Emmanuel, When did Mussolini takeover as leader of Italy? How did Mussolini takeover as leader of Italy? What was the symbol of the fascists?
3. “Il Duce: The man, the life, the mission”	A Biography--What does the nickname stand for? Where was he born? What is his professional background? What are significant events in his life? How did he die?
4. “Investigative Report on the Facist Social Policy”	What were the fascist policies on censorship, women, and family? What were some of the fascist slogans?
5. “Interview with a former Black Shirt”	What tactics were used by the Black Shirts to enforce the fascist policy? Who are the secret police? Who did they target?
6. "Fascism for boys and girls"	How did Mussolini target the youth through propaganda, and educational campaigns?

Germany

Possible Title	Questions that must be answered and ideas that must be covered.
1. “What Germans need to know: Censorship and propaganda under Hitler”	What media did the Nazi’s censor? What books did they monitor? Give examples of their propaganda.
2. “A day in the life of a Hitler Youth”	What was the Hitler Youth? What were some of their activities? What values did they instill in the youth?
3. "Watch out, Watch out! Where ever you are!"	The Nazi Secret Police: Who did they target? What were their tactics? Who lead them? How were they organized?

Japan

Possible Title	Questions that must be answered and ideas that must be covered.
1. “Hirohito: 1926-1939”	Give brief biography and information on birth, life, reign of Hirohito. How did the government of Japan change from the time that he took control until WWII began?
2. “The plan for the Empire”	What was the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere? How did the Japanese plan to build an empire? Why were they sick of being treated as a second class country?
3. “We interrupt to bring you reports of the Rape of Nanking”	What was the Japanese invasion of Manchuria? When did the Rape of Nanking occur? What happened there?
