Mrs. Walmsley's Kindergarten

MARCH

Welcome to Kindergarten!!!!

Our theme this week is Dental Health!!!

March 1

The week of March 1 our theme is Dental Health and we will also learn about Time. Show and Tell can relate to either.  On Tuesday, March 2 we will have a presentation from a dental hygienist.

Tuesday, March 2 is our 100th day of school so we will be doing several activities on Wednesday related to 100 to celebrate the big day!!!

We are focusing on Dr. Seuss books in our Author Corner in our classroom library.

Thanks to all the cheering fans who attended the big game Sunday.  It was lots of fun.

Week of March 8-We begin our theme is Food and Nutrition.  We will be talking and reading about foods that are nutritious and those that should be eaten in smaller quantities and for special treats.  This is something I am passionate about and I hope I can instill some good habits in the children. This week I am asking each student to bring three written clues describing a fruit for sharing. Hopefully we will have some unusual ones. If you can send the actual fruit in it would be great. Please put it in a bag so we don't see it until after we guess.

Week of March 15-We will continue our theme on Nutrition and for sharing we will bring three clues describing a vegetable. If you can, please send the actual vegetable. It is surprising how many children can not identify many fruits and vegetables so you may want to take a field trip through the produce isle during this theme.

March 17 is Young Authors Day for kindergarten. I hope you can come in and hear stories we have written.

Week of March 22-We will focus on good health in general. For sharing I am asking each child to teach us an exercise.

Week of March 29-We will do a theme on Folk Tales and Fairy Tales. We focus on some of the old favorites; The Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, and Little Red Riding Hood. Sharing can be a book, puppet, puzzle, toy, or project about this topic.

Week of April 12-We will learn about Giants and Castles.

Feb. 22 WELCOME BACK!!!!!!  I hope everyone had a good vacation.  The kindergartners seem eager to get back to our kindergarten routine and so am I.  I had wonderful weather in Arizona and hiked, biked, played tennis, soaked up the sun, and spent time with old friends.

This week our theme is called "Back to School" and we will be reading several big books that reinforce our sight words and beginning reading skills and strategies.  We will be working on word families and math skills also.  For sharing we will be reading our Vacation Books that we made last week.

On Thursday it will be Dean's last day in our class.  He is moving to North Carolina and we will miss him.  All the best to Dean and his family.

Thanks to all the parents who sent us treats for our Valentine Party.  Don't forget to send in Valentine Homework if you have not done that.

The week of 1/25 we are learning about friendship and the qualities of a friend. For sharing I am asking each child to tell us one way he or she is a good friend. It would be great if your child could write it with your help.

I will be sending home information about Valentine's Day and a class list to use when your child writes his/her valentines. I am giving you plenty of time so your child can do as much of the writing as possible. This is a very motivating learning task. It will be easier for some than others so don't try to do too much in one sitting.

Color Words-On the 29th I will send home some color word cards to practice reading the eight basic color words. After vacation in February I will be checking to see who can read all of them and awarding certificates!

Week of Feb 1-Our theme is Post Office and we will also be learning about shadows in honor of Groundhog Day! Sharing can relate to either topic.

Week of Feb. 8-Our theme will be Valentine's Day and George Washington and Abe Lincoln. Sharing can relate to any of those topics. Our party is on Feb. 12. Mrs. Megan will call or email to remind you if you signed up to send something to our celebration.

There will be "Valentine Homework"!!

SpellingCity.com

I have discovered a new website where the children can work on reading and spelling their List 1 and 2 words. This is meant to be motivating and fun. Please stop if your child is frustrated or not interested. Go to spellingcity.com. Click on "Find a list", enter a search term=Walmsley, click on Bonnie Walmsley, click on list 1 or 2 and play games, print papers, etc. I am open to feedback on this website.

We also need to work on zipping and becoming independent packing backpacks and putting on winter clothes. If your child wears outdoor boots, please remember to send shoes.

Each week in January we will focus on five sight words from List 1. If needed please play some games to help your child learn them. If they can read them, then work on spelling them too.
