Conflict or disagreement
is normal and often happens when children get together. Our goal at
Karigon Elementary School is to teach students positive ways to deal
with their problems. Kelso's Choice is a conflict management program
for children. It teaches students the difference between "big"
problems, when we need an adult to help and "small" problems. when we
can solve them ourselves. This program provides students with 9 ways
to make good choices and become problem solvers. By using Kelso's
Choices students can deal with small problems in a positive manner. In
grades 1-3 we use Kelso's Wheel to make at least two of the choices
when faced with a conflict. Each classroom is equipped with the poster
and small sheets of paper with to write the problem and the two
strategies they used to solve the problem. Classroom lessons and
discussions are provided to learn and review the nine choices
available to all student when faced with a small problem.
Simon's Hook
Written by Daren Gedig Burnett Website

Simon's Hook is a story about
how to handle teasing and put-downs. When Simon's sister cuts some gum
from his hair, Simon is subjected to teasing from his friends. When he
goes to his Grandma Rosé, she shares with him a story about a fishing
pond and how the fish in the pond learn strategies on reacting to
teasing and put-downs. This book works well in grades 3-5. Students
enjoy the illustrations and learn how not to be "hooked" when others
are unkind.
