Independent Reading

Each month a book will be chosen to be read and a special project will be completed.

Some months the students will make the book selection. Other times the genre will be chosen by the teacher. A few examples may include mystery, fantasy, historical fiction, biography, and non-fiction. Some months the projects will be selected by the teacher and during other months, the students will make the choice.

Project - Diorama

Create a diorama of a scene of a major event in the book.

A box should be used to contain the scenery and figures. The box should measure about 16 inches by 14 inches. Suggestions for materials can include plastic objects and craft supplies (such as paper, yarn, cardboard, cotton and string). Paints, crayons, colored pencils or markers should also be used.  The completed project should be colorful, neat and easy to see. The objects should not be too small but an appropriate size for the box.

An index card should be attached to the top of the box.  It should include:

    Title and author of the book

    Genre of the story

    Summary of the scene, main characters, setting, and problem with solution

    Write your own name on the card and be sure all information  is clearly written.
