Our reading program consists of
guided, shared, modeled and independent reading. We use the Harcourt
"Trophies" series as a guide to introduce and reinforce a specific reading skill
and strategy each week. Students then apply what they learn to their
independent reading and through a weekly journal letter that is an ongoing log
between student and teacher. We also use Literature Circles as a means for
students to make connections with books and peers.
In Writer's Workshop students are
taught specific skills to continuously build upon what they already know.
This approach allows for the student to have much choice in their writing, yet
at the same time offers structure and ample opportunities for guidance.
Our Language Arts program also
incorporates spelling and grammar. The weekly spelling words follow a
specific sound and letter pattern each week. We spend most of our day in a Language Arts
block whether it be some kind of reading, writing, spelling and/or grammar work.
