Critical information regarding Acceleration/Honors programs in
the Middle Schools
To be
considered for an Accelerated/Honors program, there are common characteristics
that students should demonstrate throughout
grade 6. They include the following:

High achievement in
the subject area(s)
· Daily commitment to completing all assigned work conscientiously
· Active participation in class
·
Effective use of study
skills
·
Interest and
motivation in the subject area(s)
·
Demonstrated critical
thinking skills (abstract reasoning in mathematics)
In
addition, the following are essential components of the selection process:
·
Classroom teacher
nomination
·
Department
administrator recommendation
·
Information from
parents regarding academic achievements outside of school (e.g., Center for
Talented Youth (CTY) summer program)
·
Additional testing in
some departments
While standardized test scores or involvement in additional educational programs may be considered, the demonstration of a student's ability on a daily basis is essential in the nomination and recommendation process.
