Critical information regarding Acceleration/Honors programs in the Middle Schools

To be considered for an Accelerated/Honors program, there are common characteristics that students should demonstrate throughout grade 6. They include the following:

·        High achievement in the subject area(s)

·        Daily commitment to completing all assigned work conscientiously

·        Active participation in class

·        Effective use of study skills

·        Interest and motivation in the subject area(s)

·        Demonstrated critical thinking skills (abstract reasoning in mathematics)

In addition, the following are essential components of the selection process:

·        Classroom teacher nomination

·        Department administrator recommendation

·        Information from parents regarding academic achievements outside of school (e.g., Center for Talented Youth (CTY) summer program)

·        Additional testing in some departments

While standardized test scores or involvement in additional educational programs may be considered, the demonstration of a student's ability on a daily basis is essential in the nomination and recommendation process.
