Acceleration

When do students have the opportunity to accelerate in math in the middle schools?  Students in the middle schools generally have two opportunities, coming into grade 6 and going into grade 8.

How are students coming into grade 6 identified for acceleration?  All 5th grade students in the high ability math classes take the TOMAGS (Test of Mathematical Abilities for Gifted Students) in February.  This test score, their NYS math assessment level, and, in some cases,  additional information from the 5th grade math teacher about the student's work habits and classroom performance are considered when recommending students for acceleration.

What class do these accelerated 6th grade students take?  Do they take the class with 7th graders?  Accelerated students in grade 6 take Math 7 Honors.  Currently, these accelerated students are grouped together for Math 7 Honors with only 6th graders in these classes.

What math course do these students take in grade 7?  Most students will take Math 8 Honors.  Some students will accelerate again into Enriched Algebra.  These determinations are based on student performance and demonstrated ability in Math 7 Honors.

How are students going into grade 8 identified for acceleration?  These students are recommended by their Math 7 or Math 7H teacher.  A student's four quarter average, work habits, level of basic skills and conceptual understanding, participation, and NYS assessment score are considered when placing students into honors or accelerated classes.
