 Ancient History and Culture of the Eastern Hemisphere and its Influence on Western Culture

 Curriculum Map

·         5 Themes of Geography - September

o        Students are introduced to the 5 themes of geography (location, place, human-environmental interaction, movement, and region.  All civilizations are explored through these 5 themes.

·         Early Man - End of September - Mid - October

    • Students study prehistoric times to the rise of civilization when people progressed culturally and began to live in cities.   Studies focus on people who lived during the Paleolithic and changes that occurred in living styles during the Neolithic Age when people learned to farm.
    • Students learn the 5 characteristics all civilizations possess.

 

·         River Valley Civilizations - Mid - October – February

o        Students explore the historical beginnings and culture of 4 different Ancient River Valley Civilizations:

§         Tigris-Euphrates River Valley (Mesopotamia)

§         Nile River Valley (Egypt)

§         Indus River Valley (India)

§         Huang Ho River Valley (China)

 

·         Ancient European Civilizations - March- April

    • Students explore the historical beginnings of Greece and Rome.  Attention is paid to how they were influenced by the earlier river cultures and how they have influenced Western society today, especially in the area of government.

 

·         Middle Ages - May - June

    • Students learn about life in feudalistic Medieval times by examining the different social classes that existed during the time period.  They learn what life was like on the manors, in the Church, and in the towns.
