Acadia is
one of three middle schools located on the main campus.
It opened
in
1953.
It
was
originally
called Arongen. The
three middle schools buildings are attached and share core
areas such as gym, libraries, etc., however, they function as
separate schools.

We
are looking forward to welcoming our new Acadia students from the Shenendehowa
Class of 2015! We hope that we can help to make this transition as smooth as
possible. As part of this transition process, we
have scheduled an informational parent meeting to be held in the Acadia
Cafeteria on Thursday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m.
The
presentation will be providing you with information pertinent to our middle
school program and the student experience. Some of the topics will include core
team teaching, the program of studies, exploratory courses and transportation.
We will also review a typical student schedule for our sixth grade students. In
addition, we will discuss our student Rights and Expectations, and you will
have an opportunity to ask us any questions that you may have.
If you are
unable to attend this meeting, there are two other evening programs planned and
you may feel free to attend one of these. Please understand that although much
of the same information will be covered at each of the meetings, the May 15
meeting is primarily for the parents of incoming Acadia students and the focus
will be on Acadia.
Meetings
-
Wednesday,
May 14 7:00 PM: Middle School Auditorium will focus on Gowana
-

given a tour of our school to give them a better understanding of the size of
the building and location of various classrooms. |

In February, eight of the Middle Schools top
mathematics students went to the GE Research Center in Niskayuna to
complete in the annual Capital District Mathcounts Competition.
These students included Eric Wu (7th grade Acadia), Marcel Garbos (7th
grade Acadia), Troy Wang (6th grade Acadia), Adam Crowell (7th grade
Acadia), Jessica Wang (6th grade Acadia), Chaeri Yang (8th grade
Gowana), Bilal Salam (8th grade Koda), and Ami Bhavsar (8th grade

of over 100 students moves him on to the state competition held at RPI
in March. The teams math coach, Jennifer Miller, an 8th grade math
teacher in Gowana, worked to prepare the students for the competition. |

In January, U.S. Representative Kirsten E. Gillibrand and Saratoga County
District Attorney Jim Murphy
will speak to middle school students about
internet safety.
A video that
is part of the i-SAFE program will be viewed and discussed. This video
dramatically illustrates the potential dangers of meeting people online.
i-SAFE Inc.
is a non-profit foundation whose mission is to educate and empower youth to
safely and responsibly take control of their Internet experiences. The goal is
to provide students with the awareness and knowledge that will enable them to
recognize and avoid dangerous, destructive, inappropriate or unlawful online
behavior and how to respond appropriately.
We
encourage you to talk to your children about what they learned and reinforce the
message at home. You can find more information about this program at
www.isafe.org. |

SAFETY NOTICE - ACADIA/KODA
STUDENT P.M. PICKUP
PROCEDURES
To ensure our bus ports maintain
a safe and orderly environment, student pickup procedures
have been changed for the
bus port located at Acadia and Koda middle schools for
the 2007-08 school year. Motorists will
be reminded of these safety guidelines when picking up
students at afternoon dismissal time.
-
Motorists are
asked to park in the North Elementary School
(Orenda/Karigon) parking lot to wait for their
passengers.
-
When crossing the
North/South School road students and parents are asked to use
the designated area marked as a crosswalk. Security
personnel have been assigned to this area to maximize safety.
-
Motorists are
asked not to drive in the bus port area or the center lane of
the Acadia/Koda parking lot to pick
up students.
-
Students are asked
to walk on the sidewalk and the crosswalk when meeting parent
for pickup.
-
When buses begin
to leave the bus port,
all traffic will be stopped by district
security personnel to expedite bus dismissal.
-
Adhere to the 15
mph speed limit.
Thank you for your
attention to these important safety procedures.
