Acadia is one of three middle schools located on the main campus. It opened in 1953. It was originally called Arongen. The three middle schools buildings are attached and share core areas such as gym, libraries, etc., however, they function as separate schools.

As part of a culminating event for Respect Week, team 6-1 in Acadia Middle School held a Read-a-thon to benefit Relay For Life.  That evening, students came dressed in pajamas and brought along pillows and blankets with their favorite books in tote.  The 3 hour event began with a read aloud by Dr. Robinson and Town Supervisor, Mr. Barrett.  Students read in 45 minute intervals, each beginning with a guest reader.  They took short re-energizing breaks in between.  A fun-filled evening was had by all involved.

Congratulations to teams 6-2 and 6-3 in Acadia and Gowana. The 4th annual puzzlethon was a huge success!  Because of their efforts, $5,418.37 was raised for Alzheimers by solving 3,715 puzzles! The Alzheimers Association was presented a check on May 8 and newly-elected Congressman Scott Murphy was there to speak to the students.  This was the 4th year for this activity.  In that time, almost $15,000 has been raised for the Alzheimer's Association.

As part of the efforts of the diversity committee at Acadia Middle School, flags representing 60 different countries were hung in the cafeteria. The committee conducted a survey to find out the various countries of origin of students throughout the school. The flags were donated and represent all of these countries. The flags are meant to symbolize diversity, inclusivity and community-building.

MATHCOUNTS Competition - On Saturday, February 28th, students from our three middle schools competed in the Regional MATHCOUNTS competition.  The Acadia Team of David Luo, Jessica Wang, Troy Wang, and Eric Wu placed second overall in the team competition (the first place team won by only five tenths of a point!).  This team will be competing Saturday, March 14th at RPI in the State competition.  Acadia Middle School also had THREE students who made it to the Countdown Round (the top 12 individual scores from the entire competition).  These were Troy Wang (ranked number 11), Jessica Wang (ranked number 7), and Eric Wu (ranked number 2). The Koda Team of Amanda August, Bradley Malmberg, Harry Newman-Plotnick, and Anthony Segreto placed tenth overall (out of 21 teams).  It was especially outstanding that all of these students are seventh graders who have never been to a MATHCOUNTS competition before. In addition, there were two students who competed individually for Acadia.  Sara Wong received an individual ranking of 23, and Philip Sun received an individual ranking of 26.  Congratulations to all of our mathletes!  A special thank you to Mrs. Romano, the MATHCOUNTS coach, and Felix Sun and Eric Wang, her student “co coaches” who have spent many hours preparing these students for this event.

Dear Parent/Guardian:

The safety of our students is a concern for all. Advances in technology, and the proliferation of younger students with cell phones present new challenges to educators and parents on a daily basis. Cell phone use during the instructional school day is prohibited.  Text messaging, cell phone calls and the taking of pictures disrupt the learning environment and bring a myriad of other adolescent issues to contend with.  Recently, it has come to our attention that a couple of middle school students have been involved in circulating inappropriate photographs/messages via cell phone .

Parents should know that “Sexting” is the new "buzz" word and it references the practice of sending nude photos or sexually explicit messages via cell phone to friends, boyfriends, girlfriends and, in some cases, strangers. We are asking all parents to talk to their child(ren) about this inappropriate behavior and check their cell phones and computer use. Working with our School Resource officer to investigate the reports, students were informed that criminal charges for distributing pornography could be brought forth and parents were contacted.   Recipients can also be charged with possession if they don’t delete the material immediately. State and federal laws make no age distinction on who can be charged with child pornography.   Sometimes teenagers don’t always know where to draw the line and something that they think is a “joke” or “all in good sport” may actually be harmful to themselves and/or others.

There are other consequences as well. Students will be disciplined according to the district's code of conduct. Students should also understand that they may find their photos on the cell phones of dozens of their classmates or on a social networking site such as Facebook. In the future, these photos could come back to haunt them when apply to college or seek employment opportunities.

Some companies, such as WebSafety Inc., have developed software that parents can use to monitor certain activity on cell phones and computers. According this company, parents can block X-rated texting terms or be alerted when their child is using them. Photos are trickier, though, and often require a parent to manually check a child's phone.

At the middle school, we do our best to encourage an atmosphere of respect and consideration.  We will continue to offer educational programs on internet safety and the use of technology as it rapidly advances.  In addition, the School Resource Officer, administrator or school counselor will assist you in seeking resources available to address this topic with your teenager.   Parents must be the primary deterrents of this type of activity. It is critical that you monitor your children’s access and talk to them about proper use of electronic communication.

Sincerely,

Jill Bush, Jon Burns, and Bruce Ballan
