Help! My Child's Struggling!

Study Tips for Students
Use the tips below to become a successful learner.
1. Are you prepared for class?
Students should come to class everyday with the appropriate materials. Although each teacher may assign different materials, universally students should come to each class with his/her agenda, binder, textbook, loose leaf paper, and pens or pencils.
2. Write your homework for every class in your agenda.
The 8-1
Team would like to emphasize to all parents and students the importance of
using the school agenda. The purpose of the agenda is to make students
responsible for his/her assignments. The agenda is the parents first
line of defense when asking their child whether he/she has homework. In
order for students to become independent learners, the agenda needs to be used
effectively.
If students forget to write their homework in their agenda, it is a good idea to call a friend on the team or in their class to get the assignment.
3. Organize your binders and folders according to class.
Each class on the 8-1 team requires students to have a binder solely for that class. Students should have tabs set up as specified by the teacher to help students stay organized. Students should not be placing papers from other classes in these binders.
Helpful
tip: Sometimes a homework folder is helpful for students who tend to forget
things. Students can carry around a homework folder to every class.
In this folder students can place any worksheets that need to be done for
homework. On one side of the folder students should place work that
needs to be done and on the other side students can place homework that is
completed.
4. Make the most of your study hall time.
Study hall time is a great time for students to get work done in school. When teachers are available, students can also use their study halls to see their teachers to ask questions or get extra help.
If
students do not have any work to do during their study hall period, students
should be reviewing class notes and worksheets.
5. Ask questions in class.
If you do not understand a concept in class do not hesitate to ask your teachers for clarification. There is no such thing as a stupid question!
6. Are you organized to go home?
When arriving at your locker at the end of the day use your agenda to help you distinguish what materials you need to bring home with you. Do you need your textbook? Your binder? Homework folder?
7. Set up a time at home to regularly do homework.
Students need to find a consistent time at home to do homework.
Students need to find a quiet place with minimal distractions to get work done.
8. Set up an appointment to stay after school or to come in early.
Teachers are available before or after school by appointment.
Before school time begins at 8am.
After school time goes from 3:35 to 4:10pm. Late bus passes will be provided.
9. If you miss a day of school see your teachers immediately!
If you are going to be out for an extended amount time it may be a good idea to call the counseling office to have your work collected from your teachers. Work can be picked up at the end of the day.
If you
are out a day, see your teachers immediately to get missed homework. DO
NOT WAIT UNTIL THAT CLASS PERIOD TO TELL YOUR TEACHER YOU WERE ABSENT.
See your teachers before homeroom to collect assignments. It may be
necessary to stay after school or come in early to catch up on work.
