Classroom Policies & Procedures

All students can be successful if they come to class with an open mind and a desire to learn.  Preparedness is also a necessity if the student is to succeed in sixth grade science.  Students are expected to come to class each and every day with their covered textbook, zipper binder, and agenda book as well as a pen and pencil.  Although coming to class prepared and on time each day is necessary, the key to being successful is to participate regularly in class discussions and to ask questions.

Homework will be assigned throughout the week.  We will go over homework assignments in class, but it is important to remember that some may be collected and graded as well.  All homework assignments should be completed with 100% effort and done in the neatest handwriting possible.  It is understandable that students may find some assignments to be challenging, but rather than giving up they are expected to put forth their best effort and to complete the assigned work to the best of their ability.

Science concepts build on one another, although there may not be science homework every night it is suggested that students review their notes two to three times a week.  Quizzes often may be given to test the students' understanding of the previous day's lesson.  Tests will be given at the conclusion of most chapters.  Tests will include a variety of questions including matching, multiple choice, and short answer.  Students will receive a review packet or a study guide prior to each chapter test.  They are expected not only to study from the review packets/study guides, but also from their textbook, notes, homework, and labs.

Students who are having difficulty with the new concepts being taught are urged to seek help immediately.  I am available for extra help before and after school as well as during lunch and study hall.  It is the student's responsibility to arrange a time to meet with me for extra help.

As a young adult, sixth graders will find that they have more freedom in the middle school, but along with that freedom comes responsibility as well.  With the guidance of the teacher, students who take responsibility for their own education will see much success throughout the year.
