Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Prerequisites:

* Create equivalent fractions, given a fraction

* Compare and order fractions including unlike denominators (with and without the use of a
number line)

* Compare fractions using <, >, or =

NYS Content Standards:

* Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators

* Multiply and divide fractions with unlike denominators

* ASMD mixed numbers with unlike denominators

* GCF of two or more numbers

* LCM of two or more numbers

* Prime factorization

* Identify the multiplicative inverse (reciprocal) of a number

* Represent fractions as terminating or repeating decimals

* Find multiple representations of rational numbers (fractions, decimals, and percents 0 to 100)

* Justify the reasonableness of answers using estimation (including rounding)

*Review measurement in fraction unit

Students must KNOW the following definitions:

numerator
denominator
fraction
equivalent fraction
reciprocal
ladder method
improper fraction

LCM
GCF
LCD
prime
composite
benchmark
mixed number

Students will UNDERSTAND:

* Equivalent forms of FDP exist
* Between every two whole numbers there exists an infinite # of fractions
* Different forms (FDP) are more appropriate in particular situations
* Multiplying two fractions less than 1 results in a smaller number
* Dividing two fractions less than 1 results in a larger number
* Dividing two fractions yields the same quotient as multiplying by the reciprocal

Students will be able to DO the following:

* ASMD fractions with unlike denominators
* Find prime factorization of a number
* Determine LCM, GCF, and/or LCD of 2 numbers
* Identify the reciprocal of a given number
* Justify reasonableness of an answer using estimation
