Graphing

Prerequisites:

* Collect and record data from a variety of sources (e.g., newspapers, magazines, polls, charts, and surveys)

* Display data in a line graph to show an increase or decrease over time

NYS Content Standards:

*Record data in a frequency table

* Construct Venn diagrams to sort data

* Determine and justify the most appropriate graph to display a given set of data (pictograph, bar graph, line graph, histogram, or circle graph)

* Display data in a circle graph

* Convert raw data into double bar and double line graphs

* Read and interpret data represented graphically (pictograph, bar graph, histogram, line graph, double line/bar graphs or circle graphs)

Students must KNOW the following definitions:

frequency table
Venn diagram
data
pictograph
bar graph
line graph
histogram
circle graph

scale
interval
range
acute
obtuse
right angle
*central angle

Students will UNDERSTAND:

* Venn diagrams compare and contrast data
* Why different graphs are used to display different sets of data
* Circle graphs are based on one whole or one hundred percent
* Difference between scale and interval
* Central angles of a circle add up to 360
°

Students will be able to DO the following:

* Record data in a frequency table
* Construct Venn diagrams to sort data
* Determine and justify the most appropriate graph to display a given set of data.
* Determine appropriate scale and interval given a set of data
* Construct and measure central angles of a circle
