Integers

Prerequisites:

* Compare and order fractions including unlike denominators (with and without the use of a number line)

NYS Content Standards:

* Determine absolute value and determine the absolute value of rational numbers (including positive and negative)

* Locate rational numbers on a number line (including positive and negative)

* Order rational numbers (including positive and negative)

* Add and subtract integers with and without the number line

Students must KNOW the following definitions:

Positive
Number line
Integer

Negative
Absolute value
Rational numbers

Students will UNDERSTAND:

* Rational numbers exist (positive and negative)
* Absolute value of a negative number is always greater than zero
* A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a fraction or a ratio (positive and negative)
* Negative rational numbers decrease in value the farther away they get from zero (on a number line)
* Adding and subtracting integers behaves differently than adding and subtracting whole numbers (ex. adding integers can sometimes result in a smaller number)

Students will be able to DO the following:

* Identify and locate rational numbers on a number line (positive and negative)
* Determine absolute value of rational numbers (positive and negative)
* Order rational numbers (pos. and neg.)
* Add and subtract integers with and without a number line
