MATH OVERVIEW

The 6th grade math curriculum is based on the New York State Standards and the District’s Essential Contents and Competencies. Math is divided into several units, including: Whole Numbers, Place Value, Decimals, Metric Units, Multiplication, Division, Graphs, Statistics, Fractions, Ratios, Proportions, Percents, Integers, Formulas, Probability, and a brief introduction to Algebra.

Classroom expectations: Students are expected to follow Shenendehowa's Rights and Expectations: Be Here, Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Set Goals; as well as Team 6-1's Code of Conduct. Math is a challenging subject for many and students are being held to higher and higher standards. Therefore, we need to take every moment of class time to be productive and focused on learning. Students are asked to be in their seats when the final bell rings, raise their hand to speak, and to remain in their seats during instructional time. All students need to come to class prepared and ready to learn. Students will need to bring their math binder, pencils, a pink highlighter, a ruler, a calculator, and an independent reading book to class every day. Students will be asked to bring specific supplies, such as a compass and a protractor at certain times throughout the year.

Agendas: An agenda, or assignment planner, is provided to each student through the Acadia PTA. (Thank you!) Students must have this agenda with them at all times-NO EXCEPTIONS. Students will use the agenda to write down ALL assignments. If a student loses their agenda or has torn out pages in the agenda, a new one will need to be purchased. The team teachers and/or the counselor will check agendas periodically. Students are rewarded for keeping their agenda neat and up to date. Parents are asked to check the agenda on a nightly basis. Not only is it a great organizational tool, but it works as a communication tool from school to home as well.

Homework expectations
: Homework is assigned every night. It has been proven that multiple exposures to material increases student learning. Students are expected to come to class prepared with their assignment fully completed. If an assignment is not turned in on time, the student needs to complete it by the next class and bring it to me (I will not hunt them down). The student will then receive partial credit instead of a zero. The grade will remain a zero unless they get the assignment to me by next class. Binder Expectations: Each student will need a 2" red binder for math. Notes, homework, tests, and quizzes for each unit will be kept in the binder. Each unit will contain a table of contents, in which every handout, homework assignment, and quiz/test will be entered. Students should always put the new handout at the end, so that handouts are in the order that they are received. The page number and the description will be written on the colored table of contents that should be at the beginning of every unit. A sample of how it should look will be hung on the board in the front of my room. Students are encouraged not to fall behind, as it's easy to keep this up to date- it only takes seconds and it's always a good "pop" quiz grade from time to time! Since the graded assignments are also recorded in the table of contents, it is very easy to stay up to date on your average. Students will be graded using a point system. To calculate your average, add up the total number of points earned and divide it by the total number of possible points earned. Then multiply the quotient by 100.

Absences: Students who are absent need to see me to get work made up in a timely manner. Assignments will not be marked late (unless the student never makes them up, or does so in an untimely manner). We stress that when a student returns to school after an absence, they immediately go to see each of the teacher's whose classes they missed while they were out. If a student is sick and may be out for a longer period of time (more than two days), please contact the guidance office and they will coordinate the student's work so it may be picked up by a parent.

If a class is missed due to a music lesson, you must see the teacher prior to the lesson to let her know and to hand in your homework for the day. At some point during the school day (either lunch or study hall), you will need to see the teacher to review and gather what you missed. In this case, there is NO extension on homework assignments.

Often, there are assignments that cannot be made up at home, such as tests, quizzes, projects, etc. In such cases, students are required to make an appointment with the teacher to complete the assignment(s) during study hall within one week’s time. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the teacher for a make-up time and keep the scheduled appointment.
