SHORT STORY PLOT LINE

  

Plot Line – The sequence of events in a story.

 

a.     Exposition/Introduction – Introduces the story’s characters, setting, and situation.

 

b.     Initial Incident – The conflict or problem that the characters face that puts the story in motion.

 

c.     Rising Action – Adds complications to the story’s conflicts or problems to increase reader’s interest.

 

d.     Climax – The point of the greatest emotional intensity, interest or suspense in a story.  It is usually the turning point in a story – the point at which the resolution of the conflict becomes clear.

 

e.     Falling Action – The action that immediately follows the climax. 

 

f.       Resolution – Presents the final outcome of the story.  It concludes the falling action by revealing or suggesting the outcome of the conflict. The resolution can be better off, equal to, or worse off.
