Welcome to English Class with Mrs. Quinn and team 7-1 ! It is my hope that each student is successful in this class as he or she develops his or her reading, speaking, thinking and writing skills while also enjoying the time spent here. Team 7-1 follows the Acadia Rights and Expectations. To be successful in English class and throughout the school day, there are a few things everyone should know. Read on!
Be Here: I expect students to be in class everyday and be focused on learning. This means each child comes prepared with his/her agenda, writing tools, and notebooks. I hope to make class fun and I encourage students to have fun and maintain a positive attitude while working. Students who make poor academic choices about doing work (meaning they chose not to do work) will find they won't be as successful as they or their parents hope. Being "Here" mentally and doing the assigned work is the greatest key to not just surviving, but growing and thriving!
Be Safe: Having fun in class and learning means that everyone feels safe. To do this, everyone should know that I simply won't tolerate mocking or abusive behavior towards anyone. If you feel your rights to enjoying a hassle free education have been breeched by someone, please let me know. Not only does a safe environment mean one free of teasing or harassment, it means that no one will get physically hurt. Please keep your books and binders neatly on your desk or under your chair and push in chairs as you leave the room. This will ensure people aren't falling over your stuff.
Be Responsible: No one ever said growing up was easy. Before you make a decision to avoid homework, tease a classmate, skip class, or blame someone for your behavior, think about the consequences. What is the desired outcome of your behavior? Who will benefit? Who will lose? What will happen if your plan backfires? Ask for help when you need it. The choice is yours. Make it a great class, day, week, quarter, semester or year or not... the choice is all yours.
Set Goals: Having goals makes it easier to deal with coming to school each day. It helps you focus and have that "Be Here" attitude that creates success. Know if you want to survive the day, learn a new concept, hone a skill or become a stronger individual. Your goals determine your direction and successes! See the information below about how to stay organized, manage your time and use your agenda well to help you make a great start or pick up the pace

What you might
expect to do, read, see,
write and think about this year!
Reading:
Students of both the traditional program and the Honors program will have to
read! Reading will be a part of class activities as well as something students
must do as homework. We read short stories, novels, poems, plays and assorted
other things like essays, personal statements, diary entries, magazine articles
and our own writing. The ability to read
well (understand what you read and apply it to questions or larger ideas) is a
critical element of success in school and in life. One way to improve your skill
level and reading ability is to actually read. As such, all students will
participate in an OSR program (OutSide Reading) which
encompasses both a reading and writing component.
Traditional 7: Students will read one book a quarter from a pre-determined genre
and complete one writing assignment from the list of choices provided.
Honors 7: Students will read three books a quarter from pre-determined genres,
from the established book list and from personal choice then completing one
writing assignment per book from the list of choices provided or from a teacher
selected assignment.
Writing:
This is Mrs. Quinn's baby! If you learn nothing else this year, I hope you
learn to write better! Each student's writing will be put to the test this year!
We will start in the fall with Writing Book Camp which gives everyone the basics
and build from there. Learning to write well is similar to learning to play an
instrument. It takes lots of practice. Expect to write lots this year!
Individuals who are strong writers have also probably developed strong skills at
breaking down a task, organizing ideas and time, and revising. These skills will be
needed your whole life!
Vocabulary:
Having a strong vocabulary and using it well is one key component to doing
well in life. As my high school English teacher, Mr. Phillipart used to say,
"words are money." If you are able to speak clearly and use a
vivid vocabulary, people will not mistake you for an idiot and you could be on
your way to a strong job or big money. Never underestimate the power of
communication skills. We will learn vocabulary from formal instructional
units (word of the day) as well as
from our reading. Quizzes are generally weekly on Fridays.
Students will be asked to work collaboratively, speak, present, write, think, read, and possibly even act throughout each unit or theme of study. There are always new things to share, learn and do, so get ready for a great year!
