What is Technology?  or Definition 2

 

 

 

Technology- "The study of the way we use knowledge and materials to improve our lives."

 

From Dictionary.com:

    1. The application of science, especially to industrial or commercial objectives.

    2. The scientific method and material used to achieve a commercial or industrial objective.

  2. Electronic or digital products and systems considered as a group: a store specializing in office technology.

  3. Anthropology. The body of knowledge available to a society that is of use in fashioning implements, practicing manual arts and skills, and extracting or collecting materials.

 

Four main areas of technology

 

1.     Communication Technology- the study of the way we send messages and information.  Examples, pagers, palm pilots, email.

 

2.     Production Technology- the study of the way we make things.  Examples, factories, farms, food production, process industries.

 

3.               Transportation Technology- the study of the way we move people and goods from one place to another. Examples, cars, planes, trains, bikes, boats.

 

4.               Biotechnology- the study of the way we improve our lives through Biology. Examples, pace-makers, heart transplants, wheelchairs, medications.

  1. The use of microorganisms, such as bacteria or yeasts, or biological substances, such as enzymes, to perform specific industrial or manufacturing processes. Applications include the production of certain drugs, synthetic hormones, and bulk foodstuffs as well as the bioconversion of organic waste and the use of genetically altered bacteria in the cleanup of oil spills.
