Reading Curriculum

Each 6th grader will participate in a Reading program (outside of English Language Arts class) that utilizes the Holt: Elements of Literature textbook series, a variety of possible novels to teach and reinforce essential reading skills, along with teaching reading skills across the 4 essential content curriculums!

**Our team does expect that ALL students are reading a self selected novel AT ALL TIMES!

Each month students will be responsible for documenting & sharing their novel progress (outside reading novel) throughout a variety of means. All activities focus on the students being able to identify the novel's key components, but are presented & documented in a variety of ways.

Specific Reading Skills to Focus on Throughout 6th Grade

Information Comprehension Skills:
    *Identifying Author's Purpose
    *Determining Main Idea
    *Making Inferences
    *Summarizing
    *Distinguishing Fact from Opinion

Literary Comprehension Skills:
    *Making Predictions
    *Understanding Setting & Characters
    *Recognizing Theme
    *Understanding Plot (series of events)
    *Comparing and Contrasting

Again, these skills are taught and reinforced throughout the use of our textbook, teacher selected novels, and essential content specific materials.

Students will also work on vocabulary development, reading responses, and large and small group novel and literature discussion throughout all reading classes.

This year our team is piloting a new reading program format.  After conducting our original pre-assessment, we spent quarter 1 working the students through reviewing basic reading comprehension skills using the novel Schooled by Gordon Korman.

Starting quarter 2, we began rotating everyone through all 4 team teachers to be presented with challenging reading material based on those content areas.  Each teacher will reinforce basic reading comprehension skills and techniques and students will hear familiar reading vocabulary consistently across all classes.
