English Language Arts focuses on further learning about and expanding skills for:  Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking.
 
   The 6th grade English Language Arts Curriculum is based on the New York State Standards and Shenendehowa's Essential Contents and Competencies.

   Throughout the school year we teach different aspects of our curriculum by utilizing a number of different resources and will also use the  “Elements of Literature” textbook published by Holt (in both LA and Reading class).

   Working students through the writing process is also a major focus throughout the school year and will be integrated throughout LA and all major core classes.

• Descriptive
• Expository
• Persuasive
• Letter Writing
• Components of Greek Myths
• Performance Task Project
• Research Paper / Project
• Essay

While writing pieces are always taught through a variety of specific topics, our curriculum also explores some larger units which include, but are not limited to:

• Grammar
• Writing Process
• The Newspaper
• Greek Mythology
• Forms of Poetry
• Research (interdisciplinary unit)
• Word of the Day / Vocabulary
