Out of the Dust

Webquest Project

Name: ________________________                                      English 8/Chetwynd

Due Date: _____________________

Task:  You will be completing a web search on the Great Depression and linking found pictures to passages in Out of the Dust. You will spend two days in the computer lab and two class periods to get you started on this project. Any part of the project not completed in class will be for homework.

Days 1 & 2: Computer Lab 919:

1)      You have already been given a Reading Guide worksheet to use along with reading the book Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse. You also have been assigned two topics to use for this project.

2)    You will locate and print out two pictures (one for each topic assigned) that illustrate the Great Depression to go along with the two passage topics I assign you from your Reading Guide sheet. For example, if you are assigned the topics “school” and “agriculture,” then you will find one picture that shows life on a farm and one picture of a school during the Great Depression.

3)    You will locate these pictures on the World Wide Web by following the directions below:

1)      Type in the following web address:

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/fsaallquery.html

2)    Under “Search Description” type in any key word(s) having to do with your

assigned topic. For example, if your topic is school, type in the word

“schools” or “school houses.”

3)    Next, click on any picture descriptions to view the picture.

4) If you want to choose that particular picture to print, make sure you can fully describe what this picture shows, the time period and how this picture represents life during the Great Depression for your final project. Some pictures will already have a description underneath. If not, use some of the given information and common sense to be able to tell us about the picture.

*To print, click on the picture to enlarge. Then, click on the print option.

**Remember – you need two pictures and will only be allowed to print two pictures. If you accidentally print the wrong one, you’ll have to use that picture anyway, so be careful! ****

Days #3 & 4: Classroom

1)      You will bring your two pictures and your Reading Guide to class both days. We will discuss how to format your poster to present in class on the due date.

Format:

1)      Use a nice, clean piece of construction paper, preferably 8 ½ by 11 inch size. I will give you this paper in class.

2)    Glue or tape (neatly, of course!) your pictures on the paper, leaving enough space underneath for your paragraphs.

3)    You will write or type a detailed paragraph (using the proper cheeseburger format) for each picture containing the following information:

1)      A description of where the picture took place, what is in the picture and how it represents the Great Depression.

2)    A passage from Out of the Dust that this picture illustrates.

3)  An explanation of how this picture correlates to the passage.
