Course Objective:
The major outcomes of the 8th grade Technology program is an ability for students to synthesize and apply their new technology literacy to the solution of problems through design, development, operation and maintenance of systems in each of the aspects of technology.
Course Description:
Five areas of study:
Time Requirements:
Week 1
· Introduction to technology (room tour)
· Safety rules
· Problem solving puzzles (brain teasers)
· Team problem (one day in length)
· Measurement review
· Sketch views of various objects
· Hand outs
Week 2
· Introduce orthographic projection
· Practice objects-views
· Begin drafting

Week 3 & 4
· Project – drafting 3 drawings to scale top, front, right side with isometric
· Show examples of expected outcomes
Week 5&6
· Cad lesson in computer lab
· Discuss grading and project limitations
· Students complete self directed activities using Inventor
· Discuss resources – testing of materials – volume - scale
Weeks 7&8
· Robotics’ - arm machine operation
· Discuss grading and project limitations
· Lessons on hydraulics – electromagnets – project function sketch’s
· Classroom layout and room management plan shared with the kids
· Begin materials processing and construction
· Testing of robotic arm and competitions
Weeks 9,10 &11
· Structures – discussion of key terms tension, torque, shear, compression
· Project limitations and out lines
· Demonstrate an example test
· Students begin drafting preliminary views of their structures
· Lessons on different locking joints and construction methods
· Classroom layout and room management plan shared with the kids
· Students begin construction of the structure project
· Students test their projects
· Review of grading system and bonus points based on ratios

Week 12, 13 &14
· Hover crafts – discussion of key terms and basic study of the physics behind the hovercraft machine
· Students receive project guidelines and time tables
· Group discussion based on design and methods of construction
· Classroom layout and room management plan shared with the kids
· Students research the internet for various Hovercraft designs
· Students begin construction after receiving their materials
· Lesson on parallel and series, soldering, safety
· Construction of the chassis
· Construction of the wiring harness
· Testing and re-testing the vehicle for efficient movement
· Racing and grading
· Breakdown
Week 15
· Introduction to energy
· Lessons, movies, and group discussions based on alternative and mass sources of energy’s
· Students understand the development of energy production and the use of turbines
Weeks 16 &17
· Classroom layout and room management plan shared with the kids
· 8/3/2004Students begin construction of their Turbines through a self directed packet.
· Testing of the turbines begin immediately after construction
· Students complete a results page and receive their grade after they write a conclusion
· Locker clean out and class room break down
