Abstract Expressionist Project
Grade 7
Objectives:
- The students will learn about Edvard Munch and how he expressed emotions through his paintings.
- The students will learn how to express emotions by using lines, shapes, color, emphasis and abstracted images.
- The students will learn the proper techniques and procedure for using paint.
Elements and Principles: Line, Shape, Color, Emphasis.
Materials: 18”x24” White Paper, Acrylic Paint, Painting Materials
Vocabulary: Expressionism, Abstraction.
Art Production:
- Anticipatory Set: Example projects will be shown to the class to draw students’ attention. Class will read about Edvard Munch and Expressionism.
- Statement of Objectives: Explanation of the project.
- Provide Input: Draw different emotions using abstracted images.
- Check for Understanding: Ask students to repeat instructions.
- Guided Practice: Students will draw “thumbnail sketches” of different emotions on a handout before choosing one image to enlarge.
- Independent Practice: Students will make two large Abstract Expressionist paintings.
- Closure: Students will answer written questions about the project.
