What do we do in FACS? In grade 6 students practice management, communication, thinking, and leadership skills using activities in the areas of nutrition and wellness, clothing and textiles, caring for young children and community service.  Students complete a community service project related to foods. Students learn about food safety and sanitation, reading a recipe, and measuring. We also make sock puppets by learning how to do some basic hand sewing. Caring for young children is another fun topic students enjoy. Students learn the ages and stages of growth and development for infants to school age children.  We invite children in for them to observe!

Grade 8  Students continue practicing  the skills covered in grades 6 and 7. We do a lot of career exploration. We use the website nycareerzone.org where students can take interest inventory tests and see how their results connect to occupations.  Students also use this website to create a career plan that is printed and placed in their file with their counselor. This file helps with future planning with high school classes. Students also take part in the realgame. This game gives students the opportunity to role play a job given to them. Students need to choose a place to live, transportation, and leisure items. Soon students learn how to budget their time and money, and take on the responsibilities of a working adult! We also complete  a interior design  project where students create floor plans.

Both grade 6 and 8 classes meet five days a week for 10 weeks.
