TO PREPARE FOR A QUIZ OR TEST, FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:
Don't wait until the night before; all quizzes and tests are announced well in advance so start early. For a major unit test you should review your notes each night for at least 3-4 days before the test. Click here to see when the next quiz or test is scheduled.
Copy into your Agenda from the assignment board exactly what the topics to be tested are and what pages in your notebook you should study from.
For a unit test, re-read the chapter(s) in the textbook which are part of the unit; this information can be found on the colored unit title page in your notebook. If more than one chapter is included, read one each night for several nights before the test.
For a unit test, use the study guide/review sheet given out in class to help you figure out what topics will be tested and what kind of questions to expect.
Make sure your vocabulary list for the unit is complete with all terms defined, and study them to make sure you know the meaning of each one; make some flash cards to learn the vocabulary.
Make sure your notebook is in order and all pages from the unit are complete; this is especially important if you have been absent.
For each topic listed on the study guide, go through your notebook and put a star on the top of each page that contains information about that topic. Use a highlighter to highlight important words or other information that applies to the topic.
Take notes on your notes: Write down each topic listed on the study guide. Go through your notebook again and jot down the important information you highlighted on the starred pages beneath each topic heading. Ask a friend or family member to quiz you about these topics as well as your vocabulary words.
Write down any questions you may have about the information or the test and ask them before the day of the test.
Choose a quiet place to study with no distractions.
TO DO THE BEST YOU CAN ON A QUIZ OR TEST, FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:
SKIM the entire test when you get it.
Carefully READ THE DIRECTIONS for each section of the test.
Answer the EASY QUESTIONS FIRST, and then go back to the more difficult items. Look for clues within other questions that may help you with the ones you are unsure of.
WATCH YOUR TIME. Don't waste a lot of time on questions you don't know; make sure to leave enough time to answer the questions you do know.
Make sure you ANSWER ALL of the questions; do not leave any questions blank. Use the process of elimination to rule out choices that you know cannot be correct. If you have to guess as a last resort, guess.
When in doubt, KEEP YOUR FIRST ANSWER; Don't change it unless you clearly recall a new fact.
STRATEGIES TO HELP WITH MULTIPLE CHOICE AND T/F QUESTIONS:
Watch for "qualifiers"; in the first group are words which are usually associated with true statements
seldom, sometimes, often, frequently, most, many, few, some, usually, generally, ordinarily
in the second group are words which are usually identified with false statements.
no, never, none, every, always, all, only, entirely, best
Read the whole statement before deciding on your answer; if part of a statement is false, the whole statement is false.
Always read the directions carefully; "Choose the best answer" and "Choose all the correct answers" mean two different things.
Read the stem of the question and try to answer it before you read the choices. If you can finish the statement, look for the correct response among the choices.
