Fourth Grade Expectations
Reading:
students are expected to read for at least 15-20 minutes five times a week
several at home book projects will be assigned
when using the Harcourt reading series, comprehension assessments will be given in conjunction with vocabulary quiz
when using novels, an end-of-book assessment or project will be given, typically after 2 or 3 weeks
some homework during novel study
Vocabulary: (typically every week)
words from our reading are assigned weekly
quiz is given on Friday
Spelling: (typically every week)
students will be provided with a list of spelling activities for home practice
pretest will determine challenge group weekly
tests are given every Thursday
Math:
students switch classes for math
homework is usually given Monday through Thursday
students should regularly practice math facts until they are proficient with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
Social Studies/ Science
units will alternate, each lasting 3-4 weeks
occasional homework to reinforce concepts (possible 2-3 times/week)
review sheets, study guides given before a unit test
Responsibilities:
students bring home and return to school with Take-Home folder and agenda book daily
homework is expected to be completed by given due date
completed, graded assignments will be sent home in an orange Friday Folder with a listing of any missing work and a weekly self evaluation which must be signed by a parent, and returned to school by the following Tuesday
Please make up missing assignments
an Absent Folder with missed work will be kept for students who are out of school, please clarify any assignments that might not be clear, students should do regular assignments and check about what went on when they were out
for long term assignments such as book reports, you will receive written directions, due dates and should be written in the Agenda, please check on your child's progress
Reminders:
children must wear sneakers and comfortable clothes for PE class on Thursdays and Fridays
children must bring recorder and Music folder on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
children should have a smock to keep in school for Art class on Mondays
Chorus will both be held on Wednesdays and Orchestra will be determined to begin in the spring
Birthday Treats: are welcome for snack time, send napkins and treats that can be passed out easily by students
students with summer birthdays may choose to send in a birthday treat on their half birthday
