Spelling in Fourth Grade

• We follow the Harcourt Grade Four Spelling Program.  The children are taught a targeted skill each week, such as vowel sounds, prefixes, and suffixes.

• On Fridays we take a pretest to establish our spelling groups for the next week.  Those who know the "Book" words well (17/20 or better) will be in the "Challenge" group for the week.

• During class time the children will practice their words by completing pages from our spelling book or in their spelling challenge packet.

• The children are encouraged to select two assignments from our list of choice assignments as a way to study the words at home.

• Our spelling test is given on Thursday. There are typically four sentences and a few isolated words on each exam.  Both the "Book" and "Challenge" test will contain the 20 new words for the week as well as 5 review words from previous "Book" lists.
